Impact Of Spinal Cord Injury On The Life Roles Of Women., M Claire Quigley
Impact Of Spinal Cord Injury On The Life Roles Of Women., M Claire Quigley
Department of Occupational Therapy Faculty Papers
This qualitative study was conducted to explore and describe the role experience of five women whose lives were disrupted by a traumatic spinal cord injury and who later returned to their communities after completing intensive rehabilitation programs. In-depth interviews and participant observations were used to examine the experiences of these women. The findings exemplify how the women's use of adaptation and negotiation and the development of a new role as self-advocate facilitated the reestablishment of their life roles. As the women's occupational roles were redefined, the processes of adaptation and negotiation were evident in three aspects of their lives: daily …

EnterohemorrhagicEscherichia Coli O157:H7 Requires Intimin To Colonize The Gnotobiotic Pig Intestine And To Adhere To Hep-2 Cells, Marian L. Mckee, Angela R. Melton-Celsa, Rodney A. Moxley, David H. Francis, Alison D. O'Brien
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
In a previous study, enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) O157:H7 with a deletion and insertion in the eaeA gene encoding intimin was used to establish that intimin is required for the organism to attach to and efface microvilli in the piglet intestine (M. S. Donnenberg, S. Tzipori, M. L. McKee, A. D. O’Brien, J. Alroy, and J. B. Kaper, J. Clin. Invest. 92:1418–1424, 1993). However, in the same investigation, a role for intimin in EHEC adherence to HEp-2 cells could not be definitively demonstrated. To analyze the basis for this discrepancy, we constructed an in-frame deletion of eaeA and compared the …

Identification Of Gene Products Encoded By The Latency-Related Gene Of Bovine Herpesvirus 1, Ashfaque Hossain, L. M. Schang, Clinton J. Jones
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
Bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) establishes a latent infection in sensory ganglionic neurons of infected animals. Expression of latency-related (LR) gene products is controlled by a 980-bp fragment (LR promoter). DNA sequence analysis revealed that two major open reading frames (ORFs) are in the LR gene. Antibodies directed against both ORFs were generated in rabbits by using synthetic peptides. Antibody P2, which is directed to sequences near the amino terminus of ORF 2, recognized a 41-kDa protein in lytically infected cells, suggesting that ORF 2 encodes a protein. When the LR gene was inserted into a mammalian expression vector and subsequently …

Evaluation Of Oral Midazolam As Pre-Medication In Day Care Surgery In Adult Pakistani Patients, N Ahmed, F A. Khan
Evaluation Of Oral Midazolam As Pre-Medication In Day Care Surgery In Adult Pakistani Patients, N Ahmed, F A. Khan
Department of Anaesthesia
A placebo controlled randomized double blind study was designed to assess the suitability of oral Midazolam as a premedication in day care surgery in adult Pakistani patients. Fifty ASA I and II patients aged between 20-60 years received either Midazolam 7.5 mg or a placebo approximately one hour prior to surgery. Midazolam 7.5 mg produced significant anxiolysis and sedation (p < 0.001) in comparison to placebo after one hour of premedication. There was a significant difference (p < 0.001) in the mean heart rate and blood pressure in both groups after 1 hour of premedication with a lesser rise in blood pressure and heart rate in the Midazolam group. Psychomotor performance assessed by 'n' deletion test was impaired by Midazolam (p < 0.001) and recall of pictures revealed differences (p < 0.05) in the groups at one hour after premedication. However, at four hours after surgery there were no differences in both groups. These findings indicate that rapidly acting oral Midazolam in doses of 7.5 mg provided safe and effective premedication in terms of anxiolysis, sedation, amnesia and psychomotor performance and is suitable for day surgery.

Apparatus And Method For Multiple Wavelength Of Tissue, Robert A. Lodder, Lisa A. Cassis
Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Patents
An apparatus for analyzing the chemical composition of tissue includes a near infrared light source, a fiber-optic probe, a mechanism for directing the light from the light source onto the tissue and detectors for detecting light reflected by the tissue. The light source transmits an incident beam having a wavelength ranging from 1000 to 2500 nm. A compound parabolic concentrator (CPC) is connected to a distal end of the fiber optic probe to focus or concentrate the wavelengths of light simultaneously and in parallel on a particular spot of tissue. Alternatively, an inverted, substantially conical reflector is positioned to scatter …

The Relationship Between Vision And Athletic Performance, Steven Richard Wininger
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In today's competitive world of athletics it is not uncommon to discover a few athletes actively involved in some form of vision enhancement motivated by the promise that the exercises will improve their athletic performance. A review of past and present literature in the area of sports vision revealed that these athletes are performing exercises based upon a very weak scientific foundation. Most of the research investigating the relationship between vision and athletic performance has been plagued by flawed methodology, as well as extremely low numbers of subjects. The purpose of this study was to test for any relationship between …
Antibody Response To Trypanosoma Cruzi During The Course Of Infection In Mice Held At Elevated Environmental Temperature, Lianyong Gao
Antibody Response To Trypanosoma Cruzi During The Course Of Infection In Mice Held At Elevated Environmental Temperature, Lianyong Gao
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
It has been demonstrated that changes in environmental temperature can influence the resistance of mice to Trypanosoma cruzi (the causative agent of Chagas' disease in humans) infection. This increased resistance is not only reflected by decreased parasitemias and increased longevity but also by enhanced parasite-specific and nonspecific immune responsiveness in infected mice. The antibody response to heterologous antigen has been demonstrated to be greatly enhanced in infected mice held at elevated temperature. However, the parasite-specific antibody response was reported to be lower in infected mice maintained at 36°C than at room temperature (RT) during early stage of infection, although it …

The Effect Of Dietary Supplemented Vitamin E And Selenium On Experimental Chagas' Disease, Brenda Bennett
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Dietary supplementation with increased levels of vitamin E can enhance the immune system of C3HeB/FeJ mice to enable many of them to survive an otherwise lethal dose of Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas' disease. To study the role of diet on the course of experimental Chagas' disease, C3HeB/FeJ mice were fed pelleted, synthetic food containing no vitamin E and selenium, 800 IU/kg vitamin E, 2 ppm selenium, or food containing 800 IU/kg vitamin E plus 2 ppm selenium. Mice on synthetic food were compared to control mice fed a commonly used Purina rodent chow # 5001. After diet …

Site Directed Mutagenesis Of A Putative Protease Cleavage Site Within The 105 Kilodation Protein Of Southern Bean Mosaic Virus, Jingyu Shi
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
There are four open reading frames (ORF) in three positive-sense translational phases of Southern Bean Mosaic Virus (SBMV). ORF2 codes for a 105 KDa polyprotein which is proposed to be autocatalytically cleaved into smaller functional proteins. Amino acid sequence homology between the SBMV and poliovirus, foot and mouth disease virus, and cowpea mosaic virus reveal that SBMV has a similar genomic organization to picornaviruses with a conserved order: Vpg (Viral protein, genome-linked )-protease-replicase. Two Gln-Ser (QS) amino acid pairs within the 105 KDa polyprotein, C75= 930-936, C60= 1305-1310, are proposed to be the cleavage sites based on 1) similar structural …

The Effect Of A Shared Decisionmaking Program On Rates Of Surgery For Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. Pilot Results., John E. Wennberg
The Effect Of A Shared Decisionmaking Program On Rates Of Surgery For Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. Pilot Results., John E. Wennberg
Dartmouth Scholarship
Mulley at al hypothesized that active efforts to involve patients in devisions made about their care should improve outcomes by better matching treatments with patient values and needs. How utilization of various treatments would be affected is a critical element of the evaluation of such efforts. The Shared Decisionmaking Program for benign prostatic hyperplasia (SDP-BPH) is an interactive videodisc-based patient education program designed to help patients make an informed choice about whether to elect a transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) or to follow a program of expectant management called "watchful waiting."
The BPH-SDP was piloted by two urology groups …

Patients often want considerable information about their conditions, and enhanced patient participation might reduce unwanted practice variation aad improve medical decisions. The authors assessed how men with benign prostatic hyperplasia reacted to an educational program designed to facilitate participation in declsionmaking and how strongly ratings of their symptom state and the prospect of complications predicted their treatment choice. A prospective cohort study was conducted in three hospital-based urology practices: two in prepaid group practices, and one Veterans Administration clinic. Four hundred twenty-one men with symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia without prior prostatectomy or benign prostatic hyperplasia complication were enrolled, and 373 …

Transactivation Of The Moloney Murine Leukemia Virus And T-Cell Receptor Beta-Chain Enhancers By Cbf And Ets Requires Intact Binding Sites For Both Proteins., Wanwen Sun, Barbara J. Graves, Nancy A. Speck
Dartmouth Scholarship
The Moloney murine leukemia virus (Mo-MLV) enhancer contains binding sites (LVb and LVc) for the ets gene family of proteins and a core site that binds the polyomavirus enhancer-binding protein 2/core-binding factor (cbf) family of proteins. The LVb and core sites in the Mo-MLV enhancer contribute to its constitutive activity in T cells. All three binding sites (LVb, LVc, and core) are required for phorbol ester inducibility of the Mo-MLV enhancer. Adjacent binding sites for the ets and cbf proteins likewise constitute a phorbol ester response element within the human T-cell receptor beta-chain (TCR beta) enhancer and contribute to constitutive …

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Intermolecular end-to-middle domain pairing between a thrombin-exposed 'A' polymerization site in the central 'E' domain of fibrin, and a constitutive complementary 'a' site in each outer 'D' domain ('D:E'), is necessary but not alone sufficient for normal fibrin assembly, as judged from previous studies of a congenital dysfibrinogen, Tokyo II (gamma 275 arg-->cys), which showed defective fibrin clot assembly and a normal D:E interaction (Matsuda, M., M. Baba, K. Morimoto, and C. Nakamikawa, 1983. J. Clin. Invest. 72:1034-1041). In addition to the 'a' polymerization site, two other constitutive intermolecular association sites on fibrinogen D domains have been defined: between …
