One Way To Be Born? Legislative Inaction And The Posthumous Child, Karin M. Mika Jul 1996

One Way To Be Born? Legislative Inaction And The Posthumous Child, Karin M. Mika

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

This article argues that the posthumous child and the rights and responsibilities relating to such a child are directly related to the fundamental right to procreate. It argues that legislation must necessarily incorporate that right in sorting out issues related to the posthumous child and deviate from the standard principles of contract laws which have been applied in the past. This article examines the history, case law, federal decisions, and current legislation pertaining to artificial insemination. It argues that such legislation is inadequate and that legislatures must act promptly to address the realities of the posthumous child.

Toxin-Coregulated Pilus, But Not Mannose-Sensitive Hemagglutinin, Is Required For Colonization By Vibrio Cholerae O1 El Tor Biotype And O139 Strains., K Helene Thelin, Ronald K. Taylor Jul 1996

Toxin-Coregulated Pilus, But Not Mannose-Sensitive Hemagglutinin, Is Required For Colonization By Vibrio Cholerae O1 El Tor Biotype And O139 Strains., K Helene Thelin, Ronald K. Taylor

Dartmouth Scholarship

The relative contributions of toxin-coregulated pilus (TCP) and cell-associated mannose-sensitive hemagglutinin (MSHA) to the colonization ability of Vibrio cholerae O1 El Tor biotype strains and O139 Bengal strains was determined by using isogenic parental and in-frame deletion mutant pairs in the infant mouse cholera model. Both the El Tor and O139 tcpA mutant strains showed a dramatic defect in colonization as indicated by their competitive indices, whereas deletion of mshA had a negligible effect on colonization in either background.

Fulminant Hepatic Failure In Pregnant Women: Acute Fatty Liver Or Acute Viral Hepatitis?, S S. Hamid, S M. Jafri, H Khan, H Shah, Z Abbas, H Fields

Section of Gastroenterology

Background: Hepatitis E virus, which is endemic in our region, can cause severe liver dysfunction in pregnant women and this can be clinically confused with acute fatty liver of pregnancy.

Methods: We studied the clinical and laboratory data as well as the maternal and fetal outcomes of 12 pregnant women presenting with fulminant hepatic failure in order to determine the etiology of the disease. The clinical diagnoses were subsequently correlated with serologic assays for acute HEV infection. All patients were severely ill with deep jaundice, grade 3-4 encephalopathy and abnormal prothrombin times.

Results: A clinical diagnosis of acute viral …

Needle Localization Of Non-Palpable Breast Lesions, S Khan, N Mitha, F Kazi, M Siddiqui Jul 1996

Needle Localization Of Non-Palpable Breast Lesions, S Khan, N Mitha, F Kazi, M Siddiqui

Department of Surgery Docs

Screening mammography identifies suspicious, non palpable mammary lesions. Mammographic needle localization (MNL) is currently being used to facilitate excision biopsy of these lesions. Thirty-two patients underwent biopsies of the breast after MNL for non-palpable lesions. Mammographic indications for biopsy consisted of microcalcifications (48%), mass or abnormal density (21%) or mass+abnormal density (24%). The carcinoma was identified in four cases (12%). Two of these were in situ, one was microinvasive and one was frankly invasive. Three were treated with a modified radical mastectomy. One of these non palpable lesion demonstrated nodal metastasis but none showed distant metastasis. All radiologically detected abnormalities …

Second-Order Conditioning Detects Unexpressed Morphine-Induced Salt Aversion, Rick A. Bevins, Timothy A. Delzer, Michael T. Bardo Jun 1996

Second-Order Conditioning Detects Unexpressed Morphine-Induced Salt Aversion, Rick A. Bevins, Timothy A. Delzer, Michael T. Bardo

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Morphine failed to condition a salt taste aversion at a dose (15 mg/kg) sufficient to produce a robust aversion to a saccharin taste. Indeed, three different concentrations of salt (1%, 1.5%, and 2%) paired with the same morphine dose yielded no direct evidence for conditioned aversion. Yet, when a novel saccharin taste was paired in compound with the previously conditioned salt conditioned stimulus, we found evidence for a conditioning to the saccharin cue alone in three separate experiments. Control groups eliminated alternative accounts such as neophobia and differential exposure to morphine. Combined, these findings indicate that morphine conditioned a salt …

Farmer Killed When Thrown From Tractor, Kentucky Injury Prevention And Research Center Jun 1996

Farmer Killed When Thrown From Tractor, Kentucky Injury Prevention And Research Center

Fatality Case Reports--Tractors/Logging

A 79-year-old farmer (the victim) was killed while driving his tractor. He had been a full-time farmer who lived alone and farmed on the 136-acre land nearly all of his life; the main commodity was beef cattle. As was his usual practice, he was working alone on the day of the incident. Every evening he had dinner with his two sisters who lived in a house on the same property about 50 yards from his home. When he did not show up for the evening meal, they went out to look for him. They found that he had taken the …

Apparatus And Method For Restoring Eyelid Function, Robert S. Baker, Brian J. Willoughby, Robert R. Marshall Jun 1996

Apparatus And Method For Restoring Eyelid Function, Robert S. Baker, Brian J. Willoughby, Robert R. Marshall

Ophthalmology and Visual Science Faculty Patents

An apparatus is provided to restore eyelid function in a patient unable to voluntarily raise an eyelid. The apparatus includes a spiral torsion spring and pulley arrangement mounted in a housing that is implanted in the superior portion of the orbit of the eye. A wire connects the pulley to the eyelid. A spiral torsion spring provides the necessary spring force in tension to overcome the weight of the eyelid and draw the eyelid open. The natural muscles of eye closure are, however, sufficiently strong to overcome the spring tension thereby paying out wire from the pulley and closing the …

A Pilot Evaluation Of Alternating Preoperative Chemotherapy In The Management Of Patiens With Locoregionally Advanced Breast Carcinoma, Thomas M. Pisansky Md, Charles L. Loprinzi Md, Stephen S. Cha Md, Nicholas F. Reuter Md

Articles

BACKGROUND:

This prospective trial was conducted to evaluate the outcome of patients treated with preoperative and post operative chemotherapy, mastectomy, and irradiation for locoregionally advanced breast carcinoma.

METHODS:

Between June 1986 and September 1990, 71 patients received 2 cycles of doxorubicin that alternated with 2 cycles of cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, and 5-fluorouracil prior to mastectomy; irradiation was administered when the tumor was not amenable to surgical resection. Additional chemotherapy and tamoxifen, in hormone receptor-positive tumors, was used after mastectomy. Post-operative irradiation was given on a selective basis for patients at high risk for locoregional disease recurrence.

RESULTS:

Although 5 patients (7%) …

Methodological And Substantive Issues In Substance Abuse Prevention Research, C. Anderson Johnson, John W. Farquhar, Steve Sussman

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

This article summarizes current issues in drug abuse prevention research through integration of other articles in this journal and by heeding historical trends in prevention science. Recommendations are made for future research directions. For prevention to advance, iterative processes are needed involving both quasi-experimental and experimental designs and involving both small, simple units and large, complex, interactive units. Accuracy of measurement and replication are of paramount importance.

Breadth Of Program And Outcome Effectiveness In Drug Abuse Prevention, C. Anderson Johnson, David P. Mackinnon, Mary Ann Pentz

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

The most popular school programs for tobacco and other drug abuse prevention address a variety of substances from tobacco to alcohol to other drugs. It is not uncommon for the same school program to address an even broader range of health and social objectives including exercise and nutrition promotion, pregnancy and HIV prevention, and violence prevention. In this article, the authors address the question of whether it is more effective to target a narrow range of objectives (e.g., smoking prevention) or a wider range of related behaviors (e.g., tobacco, alcohol, and other drug abuse). First, they consider a range of …

Anion Induced Blue To Purple Transition In Bacteriorhodopsin, Mrunalini Pattarkine, Anil K. Singh

Faculty Works

Purple membrane (PM, λ" role="presentation">λmax" role="presentation">max 570 nm) of H. halobium on treatment with sulphuric acid changes its colour to blue (λ" role="presentation">λmax" role="presentation">max 608 nm). The purple chromophore can be regenerated from the blue chromophore by exogeneous addition of anions such as CI−" role="presentation">− and HPO42−" role="presentation">2−4. Chloride ion is found to be more effective than the dibasic phosphate ion in regenerating the purple chromophore. Nevertheless, one thing common to the anion regeneration is that both CI−" role="presentation">− and HPO42−" role="presentation">2−4 show marked pH effect. At pH 1.0 the efficiency of …

Rust Diseases Of Apple, John R. Hartman Jun 1996

Rust Diseases Of Apple, John R. Hartman

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

Three related rust diseases occur on apple trees in Kentucky: cedar-apple rust, cedar-hawthorn rust, and cedarquince rust. Crabapple, hawthorn, mountain ash, pear, and serviceberry are also susceptible to these diseases. All three rusts are caused by different species of the fungus Gymnosporangium, each of which must spend a phase of its life cycle as a parasite on Juniperus species such as native red cedars or ornamental junipers.

Although cedar rusts can cause unsightly growths on Juniperus, they do not usually cause serious damage to these plants. Rust diseases can cause serious losses on apples, however, as a result …

Metal-Resistance Genetically Engineered Bacteria, Sylvia Daunert, Donna Scott, Sridhar Ramanathan Jun 1996

Metal-Resistance Genetically Engineered Bacteria, Sylvia Daunert, Donna Scott, Sridhar Ramanathan

KWRRI Research Reports

Bacterial-based electrochemical and optical sensing systems that respond in a highly selective and sensitive manner to antimonite and arsenite have been developed. This was accomplished by using genetically engineered bacteria bearing one of two plasmids constructed for our studies. The first plasmid, pBGD23, contains the operator/promoter region (O/P) and the gene of the ArsR protein from the ars operon upstream from the β-galactosidase gene. In the absence of antimonite/arsenite, ArsR binds to the 0/P site and prevents the transcription of the genes for ArsR and β-galactosidase, thus blocking expression of these proteins. When antimonite or arsenite is present in the …

Longitudinal Adjustment Patterns Of Boys And Girls Experiencing Early, Middle, And Late Sexual Intercourse, C. Raymond Bingham, Lisa J. Crockett Jun 1996

Longitudinal Adjustment Patterns Of Boys And Girls Experiencing Early, Middle, And Late Sexual Intercourse, C. Raymond Bingham, Lisa J. Crockett

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

This study examined the association between psychosocial development and the timing of first sexual intercourse in a sample of White, rural adolescents. Two theoretical models were tested. The first model, derived from problem behavior theory, proposed that earlier timing of first sexual intercourse is associated with longitudinal patterns of transition proneness and poor psychosocial adjustment. The second model, the stage termination model, proposed that early first sexual intercourse interferes with subsequent development, thereby resulting in negative developmental outcomes. problem behavior theory was supported. For both boys and girls, earlier timing of first sexual intercourse was associated with longitudinal patterns of …

Risk Of Uterine Rupture After The Partographic 'Alert' Line Is Crossed--An Additional Dimension In The Quest Towards Safe Motherhood In Labour Following Caesarean Section, K S. Khan, A Rizvi, J H. Rizvi

Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology

To determine if prolonged active phase of labour is associated with increased risk of uterine scar rupture in labour following previous lower segment caesarean section, a retrospective cohort study (1988-91) was done to analyse active phase partographs of 236 patients undergoing trial of labour following caesarean section, 7 (3%) of whom had scar rupture. After onset of active phase (3 cm cervical dilatation), a 1 cm/h line was used to indicate "alert". A zonal partogram was developed by dividing the active phase partographs into 5 time zones: A (area to the left of "alert" line), B (0-1 h after "alert" …
