Differential Scanning Calorimetry (Dsc) Analyses Of Superelastic And Nonsuperelastic Nickel-Titanium Orthodontic Wires, T. Gerard Bradley, William A. Brantley, Bill M. Culbertson

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

The purpose of this study was to determine the transformation temperatures for the austenitic, martensitic, and rhombohedral (R) structure phases in representative as-received commercial nitinol (NiTi) orthodontic wire alloys, to reconcile discrepancies among recent publications. Specimens were examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) over a temperature range from approximately −170° C to 100° C, with a scanning rate of 10° C per minute. Two different pathways, with the intermediate R structure either absent or present, were observed for the transformation from martensitic to austenitic NiTi, whereas the reverse transformation from austenitic to martensitic NiTi always included the R structure. The …

The Latency-Related Gene Of Bovine Herpesvirus 1 Encodes A Product Which Inhibits Cell Cycle Progression, L. M. Schang, Ashfaque Hossain, Clinton J. Jones Jun 1996

The Latency-Related Gene Of Bovine Herpesvirus 1 Encodes A Product Which Inhibits Cell Cycle Progression, L. M. Schang, Ashfaque Hossain, Clinton J. Jones

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) establishes a latent infection in the sensory ganglionic neurons of cattle. The exclusive viral RNA expressed in a latent infection is the latency-related (LR) RNA, suggesting that it regulates some aspect of a latent infection. During the course of a productive infection, alphaherpesviruses induce certain events which occur during cell cycle progression. Consequently, we hypothesized that a BHV-1 infection might induce events in neurons which occur during cell cycle progression. In agreement with this hypothesis, cyclin A was detected in neurons of trigeminal ganglia when rabbits were infected. Neuronal cell cycle progression or inappropriate expression of …

Explication Of The Construct Of Shared Care And The Prevention Of Pressure Ulcers In Home Health Care, Margaret Sebern Jun 1996

Explication Of The Construct Of Shared Care And The Prevention Of Pressure Ulcers In Home Health Care, Margaret Sebern

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

The purpose of this investigation was to render a more complete understanding of subjective perceptions of pressure ulcers from the perspective of family dyads, and to study the effect of these subjective experiences on preventive behaviors and pressure ulcer outcomes. A naturalistic inquiry, combined with objective measures, was used. Twenty-one dyads participated in four in-depth interviews to explore how they mentally represented and responded to the risk of pressure ulcers. Through the process of concept development, a lay representation of pressure ulcers was developed. This process produced a new concept, identified as “shared care,” that explained how the dyads interaction …

Measuring Hospital Use Without Claims: A Comparison Of Patient And Provider Reports., R E. Clark, S K. Ricketts, G J. Mchugo

Dartmouth Scholarship

We compared the validity of hospital admission and length of stay reports from patients, outpatient providers, and hospitals, and we examined possible sources of error. Data were collected from people enrolled in a randomized trial of treatment for severe mental illness and substance use disorders, from community mental health centers (CMHCs), and from hospitals. Reports for each of the 74 study participants covered two-year time periods beginning and ending at various times between 1989 and 1993. We compared reports from the various sources and constructed a hybrid with data from all three sources. Using parametric and non-parametric statistics, we compared …

Logger Killed By Falling Snag [96ky019], Kentucky Injury Prevention And Research Center

Fatality Case Reports--Tractors/Logging

A 42-year-old logger was killed after being struck on the head by a falling limb from a snag (dead standing tree). The victim had been working with one co-worker, who had temporarily left the scene to remove some logs. They were selectively cutting dead or dying trees which were approximately 20 inches in diameter. While his co-worker was away, the victim cut a tree which broke a snag approximately 30-35 feet up. The snag fell directly on the victim, striking him in the forehead. He was not wearing any type of head protection at the time of the incident. The …

Farmer Strangled By Jacket Caught On Exposed Auger Shaft, Kentucky Injury Prevention And Research Center

Fatality Case Reports--Tractors/Logging

A 44-year-old farmer was killed when his jacket became entangled on the protruding metal shaft of a feed bin auger. The victim was atop the feed bin, trying to unclog feed from the auger by beating on the tin cylinder through which the feed passed into the bin. (See Figure 1.) The feed had become clogged at this point several times in the past, and the victim had performed this task on those occasions without injury. There were no witnesses to this incident. It was a rainy day, and the victim was wearing leather-soled boots, so it is possible that …

Ultrasound Three- Dimensional Velocity Measurements By Feature Tracking, Gregory R. Bashford, Olaf T. Von Ramm May 1996

Ultrasound Three- Dimensional Velocity Measurements By Feature Tracking, Gregory R. Bashford, Olaf T. Von Ramm

Biomedical Imaging and Biosignal Analysis Laboratory

This article describes a new angle-independent method suitable for three-dimensional (3-D) blood flow velocity measurement that tracks features of the ultrasonic speckle produced by a pulse echo system. In this method, a feature is identified and followed over time to detect motion. Other blood flow velocity measurement methods typically estimate velocity using one- (1-D) or two-dimensional (2-D) spatial and time information. Speckle decorrelation due to motion in the elevation dimension may hinder this estimate of the true 3-D blood flow velocity vector. Feature tracking is a 3-D method with the ability to measure the true blood velocity vector rather than …

The Effect Of Acute Low Ph On Feeding And Locomotor Activity Of Larval Fathead Minnows, Pimephales Promelas, Sharon Ore May 1996

The Effect Of Acute Low Ph On Feeding And Locomotor Activity Of Larval Fathead Minnows, Pimephales Promelas, Sharon Ore

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Lowered pH conditions in aquatic environments can have a negative impact on many aquatic organisms. In fish it has been shown that acidic water conditions may result in altered gill morphology, reduced reproductive success, changes in locomotor and feeding behavior and even death. Juveniles and adults have been the primary focus of research. However, the larval stage is potentially the most sensitive to toxicity. It is also important ontogenetically as several crucial development thresholds, such as first feeding, occur during this period. The impact of acute low pH on feeding performance was investigated in larval fathead minnows one to fifteen …

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Cross-linking of fibrinogen at its COOH-terminal gamma chain cross-linking site occurs in the presence of factor XIIIa due to self-association at a constitutive D domain site ("gammaXL"). We investigated the contribution of COOH-terminal regions of fibrinogen Aalpha chains to the gammaXL site by comparing the gamma chain cross-linking rate of intact fibrinogen (fraction I-2) with that of plasma fraction I-9, plasmic fraction I-9D, and plasmic fragment D1, which lack COOH-terminal Aalpha chain regions comprising approximately 100, approximately 390, and 413 residues, respectively. The cross-linking rates were I-2 > I-9 > 1-9D = D1, and indicated that the terminal 100 or more Aalpha …

Evidence For Intramolecular Cross-Linked Aα·Γ Chain Heterodimers In Plasma Fibrinogen, Kevin R. Siebenlist, Michael W. Mosesson May 1996

Evidence For Intramolecular Cross-Linked Aα·Γ Chain Heterodimers In Plasma Fibrinogen, Kevin R. Siebenlist, Michael W. Mosesson

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

A peptide band of ∼105 kDa migrating near the γ dimer position of disulfide bond reduced human plasma fibrinogen prepared from fresh single donor or outdated plasma was identified by SDS−PAGE. The band, amounting to ∼2% of the total Aα/γ chain population, was thrombin and plasmin sensitive and reacted with antibodies to Aα or γ chains but not with antibodies to Bβ chains, plasminogen, or factor XIII. Amino acid sequencing revealed a double sequence corresponding to that of Aα and γ chains, indicating that the band consists of covalently cross-linked Aα·γ chain heterodimers. Aα·γ heterodimers were identified as a component …

Clinical Implications Of The Natural History Of Slow Expressive Language Development, Rhea Paul May 1996

Clinical Implications Of The Natural History Of Slow Expressive Language Development, Rhea Paul

Communication Disorders Faculty Publications

As clinicians, we now have a good deal of information about the degree of risk associated with early language delay. When parents ask us what is likely to happen to a late-talking 2-year-old by the time s/he gets to kindergarten, we are now able to provide a relatively reliable statement of the child’s chances for a good outcome, and a reassuring discussion of even the less favorable possibilities. We are now in a position to begin using the information provided by recent research to inform our deliberations about early intervention with the families and agencies we serve, and to guide …

Removal Of Extracellular Chloride Suppresses Transmitter Release From Photoreceptor Terminals In The Mudpuppy Retina., Wallace B. Thoreson, R . F. Miller May 1996

Removal Of Extracellular Chloride Suppresses Transmitter Release From Photoreceptor Terminals In The Mudpuppy Retina., Wallace B. Thoreson, R . F. Miller

Journal Articles: Ophthalmology

Removal of extracellular Cl- has been shown to suppress light-evoked voltage responses of ON bipolar and horizontal cells, but not photoreceptors or OFF bipolar cells, in the amphibian retina. A substantial amount of experimental evidence has demonstrated that the photoreceptor transmitter, L-glutamate, activates cation, not Cl-, channels in these cells. The mechanism for Cl-free effects was therefore reexamined in a superfused retinal slice preparation from the mudpuppy (Necturus maculosus) using whole-cell voltage and current clamp techniques. In a Cl-free medium, light-evoked currents were maintained in rod and cone photoreceptors but suppressed in horizontal, ON bipolar, and OFF bipolar cells. Changes …

A secondary TRAM flap was prefabricated in a rat model using the rectus muscle. The right rectus muscle was elevated as an inferiorly pedicled muscle flap in one experimental group (n = 6) and as a superiorly pedicled muscle flap in a second group (n = 5) and then sandwiched between a silicone sheet and the abdominal skin. Two weeks later, the abdominal skin and attached rectus muscle were elevated over the silicone sheet as a secondary TRAM flap. The surviving skin paddle areas of these prefabricated TRAM flaps were compared with superiorly (n = 7) and inferiorly (n = …

Exploring The Boundaries Of Pediatric Practice: Nurse Stories Related To Relationships, Joan P. Totka May 1996

Exploring The Boundaries Of Pediatric Practice: Nurse Stories Related To Relationships, Joan P. Totka

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Pediatric nurses struggle to find the right level of involvement with children and families. The purpose of this study was to illuminate nurses' struggles and insights as they learned to find the interpersonal boundaries of their own practice. The phenomenological method of Heideggerian hermeneutics was used to analyze data from audiotaped and transcribed single interviews of five pediatric nurses. The analysis of the transcriptions involved multiple stages of interpretation using a research team. The themes that emerged from the data were: (a) pediatric nurse as family caregiver: (b) finding the right level of care: over-involvement vs. crossing the line; (c) …
