Cessation interventions for adult smokeless tobacco users may benefit from an improved understanding of the demographic, psychosocial, and tobacco-dependence characteristics of this group. In the current study, 143 employees of the Pacific Lumber Company were interviewed and completed questionnaires about their tobacco use product preference (smokeless tobacco only, cigarettes only, both, and former user), demographic, psychosocial, and tobacco-dependence characteristics. Results of a multivariate discriminant analysis revealed that smokeless-tobacco-only users were younger and reported in engaging in more exercise than did the other three groups; however, they also reported greater dependence on tobacco than did smokers. Formal cessation clinics similar to …

Attorneys' And Judges' Needs For Continuing Legal Education On Mental Disability Law: Findings From A Survey, Douglas Mossman Md, Marshall B. Kapp Jd, Mph
Faculty Articles and Other Publications
Attorneys leave law school with limited knowledge and skills
concerning the issues that arise in mental disability law. Yet
psychiatrists and psychologists are appearing with increasing
frequency as witnesses in the nation's courts, and more attorneys
and judges can therefore expect to have to deal with testimony from
mental health professionals. To our knowledge, this article is the
first published assessment of practicing attorneys' and judges'
needs for continuing legal education (CLE) on mental disability
issues.
The 267 Dayton-area attorneys and 41 southwestern Ohio judges
who responded to our mailed survey said that one-seventh of their
cases raise issues related …
Opportunity, Community, And Teen Pregnancy In An Appalachian State, Robert Bickel, Susan Weaver, Tony Williams, Linda Lange
Opportunity, Community, And Teen Pregnancy In An Appalachian State, Robert Bickel, Susan Weaver, Tony Williams, Linda Lange
SHU Faculty Publications
Teen pregnancy has become an issue that educators and public policy makers are obliged to treat as a serious problem. Too often, explanations of teen pregnancy have included uncritical use of the notion of adolescents at risk. Recently, however, attention has been given to structurally-determined contextual factors in explaining teen pregnancy. Such contextual factors include economic and educational opportunities and costs, as well as chances for valued participation in socially and culturally stable communities. This interest in contextual factors parallels a development in the literature on high school dropouts. A data set previously employed to study variability in drop-out rates …

Harry F. Harlow And Animal Research: Reflection On The Ethical Paradox, John P. Gluck
Experimentation Collection
With respect to the ethical debate about the treatment of animals in biomedical and behavioral research, Harry F. Harlow represents a paradox. On the one hand, his work on monkey cognition and social development fostered a view of the animals as having rich subjective lives filled with intention and emotion. On the other, he has been criticized for the conduct of research that seemed to ignore the ethical implications of his own discoveries. The basis of this contradiction is discussed and propositions for current research practice are presented.
Combining Adventure Therapy And Reality Therapy As A Treatment Approach With Adolescents, Shawn C. Becker
Combining Adventure Therapy And Reality Therapy As A Treatment Approach With Adolescents, Shawn C. Becker
Graduate Research Papers
Adolescence is often considered a time filled with emotional conflict and stress. That stress often gives rise to psychological and behavioral problems for a large number of adolescents (Zigler & Stevenson, 1993). Teens experience poor self-concepts, decreases in self-esteem, depression, and a general inability to cope with the stress experienced during this time period. It is reported that many youth also lack support and guidance from their peers, families, and schools which would normally provide security in the development of successful personal identities (Clagett, 1992).
Current therapeutic approaches need to address these adolescent issues and needs in order to help …

Comparing Two Strategies To Modify Dietary Behavior And Serum Cholesterol, Kim D. Reynolds, Judith L. Gillum, David J. Hyman, Tim Byers, Sarah A. Moore, Gilles Paradis, June A. Flora, Karen Lazarus
CGU Faculty Publications and Research
Aim: To test the hypothesis that a strategy including cholesterol screening and dietary education is more effective than dietary education alone in changing dietary behavior and serum cholesterol levels.
Methods: Individuals at four worksites were enrolled in a randomized trial with a 'full intervention' condition in which subjects were told their serum cholesterol value and also received a dietary change kit (n=236), and a 'partial intervention' condition in which subjects received the same dietary change kit, but were not told their serum cholesterol value (n=284). Individuals (n=115) in two worksites served as a nonrandomized 'untreated control group'. Subjects were tested …

Caregiver Burden: The Impact On Aging Parents Who Care For Adult Children, Joan Klekacz West
Caregiver Burden: The Impact On Aging Parents Who Care For Adult Children, Joan Klekacz West
Graduate Research Papers
Contemporary research on caregiving has focused mainly on caregiver burden experienced by children caring for elderly parents. Most gerontological research (e.g., Greenberg, 1991; Greenberg & Becker, 1988) has stressed the movement of caregiver burden and related stress down through the intergenerational family system from parents to children. This research has ignored the impact of caregiver burden and stress on aging parents whose adult children have experienced major life stressors. In this situation, the movement of the caregiver burden moves up through the intergenerational family system as parents assume the caregiving role for adult children.

The Effect Of Silica Inhibition Of Macrophage On Renal Allograft Rejection, Carman Giacomantonio
The Effect Of Silica Inhibition Of Macrophage On Renal Allograft Rejection, Carman Giacomantonio
Data and Test Instruments
Kidney failure, one of the most serious complications of diabetes is routinely managed by kidney allograft transplantation. Research into the etiology of diabetes has revealed that macrophages are primarily responsible for the β-islet cell destruction in diabetes and that depletion of macrophages using intraperitoneal (i.p.) silica, which is selectively toxic to macrophages, prevents this. Macrophages accounts for approximately 50% of the graft infiltrating cells (GIC) observed in an acutely rejecting kidney, a process phenotypically very similar to a delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH) reaction. Macrophages are known to be essential for DTH reactions. Their exact role has never been elucidated in …

Immediate Impact Of Thirty-Two Drug Use Prevention Activities Among Students At Continuation High Schools, Steve Sussman, Thomas R. Simon, Clyde W. Dent, Alan W. Stacy, Elisha R. Galaif, Mary Ann Moss, Sande Craig, C. Anderson Johnson
CGU Faculty Publications and Research
Those teenagers who are unable to remain in the regular school system for reasons including substance use are transferred to a continuation high school. Generic comprehensive social-influence-drug-use-prevention-activities are less likely to be effective for use with these at risk youth. Thus, both classroom and self-instruction (main mode of instruction at continuation high schools) versions of 16 activities derived from different theoretical sources were tested and ranked on immediate outcome variables. 388 students from six continuation high schools were provided with a pretest-activity-posttest “component study” protocol. The scores on perceived quality ratings were standardized and averaged to permit easy comparisons across …

Aortic Valve Grafts In The Rat: Evidence For Rejection., Ahmad Moustapha, David Ross, B Bittira, D Vanvelzen, C Lannon, Vivian Mcalister, Tim Lee
Data and Test Instruments
OBJECTIVE:The histopathologic changes of fresh rat aortic valve allografts over time and the effect of cryopreservation were examined.METHODS:Fifty-six syngeneic and allogeneic rat aortic valves were transplanted, either fresh or after cryopreservation, and then at different time points they were explanted and histologically examined in a blinded fashion.RESULTS:Histopathologic changes in the first week are similar in syngeneic and allogeneic grafts. Fresh syngeneic grafts and leaflets retained normal structure up to 56 days. Allogeneic grafts showed retrovalvular thrombus formation with leaflet ghosts and neointimal proliferation. Cryopreservation did not alter this process.CONCLUSIONS:Cardiac allograft valves in the rat model undergo changes that are characteristic …
The Role Of Rejection In Aortic Valve Allograft Failure, Ahmad Moustapha
The Role Of Rejection In Aortic Valve Allograft Failure, Ahmad Moustapha
Data and Test Instruments
At present the main question is whether homograft failure is due to rejection or mechanical degeneration. The use of cardiac valve transplants between syngeneic and allogeneic strains of rats permits investigations into the role of immune mediated rejection of these grafts. We expanded an already developed microsurgical rat model for aortic interposition allografts to include the aortic valve. Aortic valves were harvested from donor rats and then heterotopically transplanted into the abdominal aorta of a recipient rat using inbred strains. All recipient rats were Lewis and donor rats were either Lewis (syngeneic) or Brown Norway (allogeneic). Grafts were transplanted either …
