ABSTRACT
Several job industries require substantial prolonged physical exertion in hot environmental conditions which increases the risk of heat-related illnesses. Endotoxemia, a hallmark of exertional heat stroke, is defined by increased levels of circulating lipopolysaccharides, often caused by gastrointestinal (GI) injury and subsequent permeability. Caffeine is a stimulant frequently used among …

The Relationship Between Social Support And Patient Characteristics Among Young Women With Breast Cancer, Lisa Moses, Evrim Oral, Donna Williams
Journal of the Louisiana Public Health Association
Background: Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer overall and the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women in Louisiana. From 2016-2020, female breast cancer accounted for 13.9% of all cancer diagnoses and 7.2% of all cancer deaths in Louisiana. Social support (SS) positively affects quality of life and positively affects survival rates following a breast cancer diagnosis. However, young women with breast cancer (YBCS) often have difficulty finding existing services meeting their family’s needs in systems focusing on older women with breast cancer. Methods: This study explored the relationship between total SS, emotional support (ES), tangible support (TS), affectionate …

Dentistry And The Law: Data Bank Reporting: A Consequence Of An Administrative Complaint, Daniel Schulte Jd
Dentistry And The Law: Data Bank Reporting: A Consequence Of An Administrative Complaint, Daniel Schulte Jd
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
In this month's Dentistry and the Law column, MDA's Legal Counsel Dan Schulte explains that a Michigan dentist who settled a licensing complaint and agreed to probation, continuing education, and a fine, is surprised to learn the action was reported to the National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB). The dentist assumed the settlement would be confidential. The column clarifies that the NPDB report is mandatory under federal law for formal proceedings, which includes compliance conferences, regardless of whether an administrative hearing occurs. The author advises that legal representation could have clarified this and outlines limited options to avoid NPDB reporting.

The pyogenic granuloma is a benign vascular proliferation which may present either on the skin or intraorally. While the majority of oral pyogenic granulomas remain less than 1 cm in size, they can grow to large sizes if care is neglected. Herein, we report case of a large pyogenic granuloma on the mandibular alveolar ridge gingiva which grew to 10x10cm in size due to failure to seek treatment.

Agreeing to do a workers' compensation or no-fault case can be a great practice builder and have a powerful and positive impact on the lives of people who have been devastated by a workplace or automobile accident. Yet, many practitioners hesitate or refuse to do these kinds of cases for a variety of reasons. Often, you are dealing with insurance companies that are unfamiliar with dental claims. Perhaps because these claims don’t crop up often, you are not familiar with the process, or you have heard stories of poor, or even no reimbursement.

The New Professional: Starting A Practice Vs. Buying: What’S Right For You?, Amrita Patel Dds
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
This month's New Professional column explores the key decision of whether to start a new dental practice or purchase an existing one. Starting a practice offers flexibility in creating a brand and using the latest technology but requires building a patient base from scratch and managing upfront costs. Purchasing an existing practice provides immediate cash flow and an established patient base but requires more upfront investment and adapting to existing systems. Dentists should consider financial readiness, long-term goals, and work-life balance when making this decision.

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
Recent guidelines from the AAOMR and ADA recommend discontinuing the routine use of lead aprons and thyroid collars during dental imaging, citing negligible radiation exposure from modern technologies and the ineffectiveness of these shields against internal scatter radiation. Despite strong evidence, Michigan clinicians may face challenges in adopting this change due to patient concerns and outdated regulations.
This article offers practical guidance for transitioning to these updated standards, emphasizing the importance of patient communication and education while highlighting Michigan's current regulatory framework.

Mda Foundation: How Your Donations Help Support The Vina Dental Clinic -- And Other Programs, Too, Anne Berquist
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
In 2007, Dr. Fredric Bonine and Dr. Sam Daniels founded the VINA Community Dental Center in Brighton, Michigan, to provide affordable dental care to low-income residents. The clinic opened in 2008, charging minimal fees for cleanings and appointments. Serving 1,500 to 2,000 patients annually, the clinic relies on volunteer dentists, partnerships with educational institutions, and grants. Notably, the University of Michigan’s Victors for Veterans program offers free dental care to qualifying veterans. The MDA Foundation supports the clinic through grants, contributing to VINA’s $250,000 annual budget. Donations to the MDA Foundation fund these efforts, ensuring continued access to affordable dental …

Exploring Body Composition And Sexual Behavior In South Texas College Students, Soyoung Kwon, Shannon Shen
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
In this exploratory study, we examined the understudied relationship between body composition and sexual behavior among freshmen college students, addressing a gap in empirical research. Our sample consisted of 217 nonclinical college students recruited from a university in the southwestern United States; a majority of the students were Hispanic (70%) and freshmen (95%). Using multivariate logistic regression, we explored associations of body mass index, body fat percentage, and fat mass index with sexual behaviors. More than half of the participants were either overweight (22.5%) or obese (30.4%), and nearly 70% fell outside the healthy range of body fat. Results showed …

Paraneoplastic acral vascular syndrome (PAVS) is a captivating enigma in the landscape of oncological pathology, characterized by vascular disturbances of the extremities. PAVS is linked to rapidly progressing trajectory and understanding the intricate interplay between cancer and this vascular dysfunction is imperative for timely diagnosis. We describe the case of a 45-year-old cachectic male who presented at the ICU with bilateral tumefied, cyanotic digits, accompanied by acute pain and numbness in both hands. A Digital Angiography described complete obstruction of the digital arteries. Imaging showed a laterocervical tumor mass with pulmonary metastases. This form of digital ischemia likely stems from …

Introduction. According to the European Cancer Information System, melanoma is the sixth most diagnosed cancer in Europe (following breast, colorectal, prostate, lung, and bladder cancer) and ranks among the top 20 most common causes of cancer-related death. The diagnosis of melanoma can be a clinical challenge due to the variety of signs and symptoms, ranging from small, asymptomatic lesions with slow progression to large, painful tumors with rapid growth. In this paper, we will report an exceptional case of cutaneous melanoma with an atypical presentation in a patient with no personal or family history of skin cancer. Case presentation. We …
