Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Syndesmophyte formation appears to be site specific in Ankylosing spondylitis(AS),and new bone formation seems to occur in regions of micro-trauma that are prone to tensile forces.Pelvic and spinal parameters are unique for individuals. Pelvic tilt and sacral slope are important anatomical features that compensate in harmony in keeping the sagittal balance. After puberty, the sacral slope shapes the lumbar lordosis, whereas the pelvic incidence is set to an individual constant. This study aims to analyze the properties of pelvic parameters in AS patients with and without syndesmophyte formation in the spine after 15years of disease duration.Materials and methods:Whole spine …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/Aim: This study aims to compare the success rates of rigid registration (RR) and elastic registration (ER)systems in diagnosing all cancers and clinically significant prostate cancer (csPC) in software-based targeted prostate biopsies (TPBs) by performing matching analysis.Materials and Methods: The data of 2,061 patients from six centers where software-based TPB was performed were used. All cancer and csPC detection rates of the RR and ER systems were compared following Mahalanobis distance matching within the propensity score caliper method. Logistic regression analysis was applied to identify factors predicting clinically insignificant prostate cancer (ciPC) and csPC diagnoses. Additionally, the International Society of …

Background/aim: The transition from pediatric to adult-oriented care for individuals with juvenile-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) poses significant challenges. This study aims to assess the outcomes of transitioning patients with juvenile-onset SLE from pediatric to adult-oriented care.Materials and Methods: Patients with juvenile-onset SLE were included. They were transferred in face-to-face meetings where at least one pediatric rheumatologist and one adult rheumatologist were present (the transition time: October-December 2020).Results: The median (25th-75th percentiles) age at diagnosis and the time of the first examination at an adult-oriented rheumatology department of 65 SLE patients were 14.3 (10.9-15.1) years and 19.2 (18.5-20.4) years, respectively …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Growing teratoma syndrome (GTS) is marked by the reduction in serum tumor markers, despite the growth of a benign mature teratomatous mass after chemotherapy treatment for germ cell tumors. Gliomatosis Peritonei (GP) is often seen with ovarian teratomas, involving the spread of mature glial tissue on the peritoneum. The coexistence of GP with GTS following treatment for ovarian immature teratoma (IMT) is particularly rare with about 20 cases reported thus far.Case: A 25-year-old patient underwent surgical removal of an adnexal mass. On paraffin pathology, she was deemed to have stage III A grade 3 ovarian IMT with parametrial involvement. …

Background/aimCongenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) are characterized by renal developmental disorders in the embryonic period. STAT3 is a member of the STAT protein family. The members of this protein family play roles in various cellular mechanisms, such as the early stages of embryonic development, kidney development, and renal diseases. This study aims to determine the frequency of STAT3 rs1053004, rs744166, rs3816769, and rs4796793 polymorphisms in individuals with CAKUT disease.Materials and methodsTwo of the four polymorphisms, rs744166 (c.-1-13666T>C, NM_001369512.1) and rs4796793 ( c.-1915C>G, NM_001369512.1), were analyzed by a polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length …

This study investigated the effect of inclusion of dietary oligosaccharides, onion peel, and an essential oil blend (EOB; containing anise, clove, oregano, cedarwood, and ginger in the ratio 4:2:2:1:1) individually and in combinations in the total mixed ration of dairy cattle on in vitro gas production (GP), dry matter disappearance (DMD), fiber fraction disappearance, and total and individual volatile fatty acid (VFA) production. EOB was used at 200 μL g–1 of feed while the other additives were administered at 3% of the feed on a dry matter basis. The in vitro batch culture technique was used for this experiment and …

In this study, the genetic structure of honey bee populations in Türkiye was analyzed using eleven restriction endonuclease enzymes targeting the COI-COII, COI, 16S rDNA, ND5, and CYT B genes. A total of 553 worker honey bee samples were collected from 43 different districts across Türkiye, as well as from Greece, Bulgaria, and Georgia, neighboring countries of Türkiye. Analysis of the COI region using the HinfI restriction enzyme revealed the presence of two mitotypes. Type 1 was the predominant type in Türkiye, while Type 2 was detected exclusively in Hatay, a province in the southern part of the country. Notably, …

Among the heterogeneous Pasteurellaceae family, Pasteurella multocida and Mannheimia haemolytica are the pathogenic species that cause enzootic pneumonia in cattle and sheep. This study aimed to characterise Pasteurella and Mannheimia species obtained from pneumonia cases in cattle and sheep. 100 cattle and 100 sheep lungs diagnosed with infectious pneumonia as a result of histopathological examination were analyzed for Pasteurellaceae members by phenotypic methods, VITEK 2 Compact system and PCR. Antibiotic susceptibilities and phylogenetic analysis of the isolates were done by VITEK 2 Compact System and 16S rRNA-PCR, respectively. Seven Pasteurella multocida and 9 Mannheimia haemolytica were identified. All strains were …

Journal of Wellness
Introduction: The purpose of this study was to explore well-being in a cohort of Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students in 2022, and compare factors related to well-being to a cohort of DPT students from 2021.
Methods: This cross-sectional observational study combined data from a self-administered survey of participants who had participated in a well-being survey in 2021 (and agreed to be contacted for follow-up one year later) with survey data from first year DPT students during the fall of 2022. The survey included the WHO-5 Well-being Index, the Perceived Stress Scale-10, the Brief Resiliency Scale, and an array of …

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
Community outreach and the integration of cultural competency are essential to the education and development of healthcare professionals. This article describes incorporating service-learning into a course at a Jesuit and Mercy institution as a method of building cultural competency into a Physician Assistant (PA) curriculum. The project examined how service-learning impacted students’ understanding of community needs and allowed students to reflect on their values. In addition, it aimed to inspire students to build connections with vulnerable populations and have concern for the poor and marginalized. Students participated in service opportunities with a community partner to identify and meet the needs …
