The Therapeutic Effects Of A High-Velocity Resistance Training Intervention For Chemotherapy-Induced Polyneuropathy, Mariah Gleeson, Lori Boright, Elise C. Brown, Deborah Doherty
Oncology Rehabilitation in Practice
Purpose: Chemotherapy-induced polyneuropathy, also referred to as chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN), is a dose-dependent, neurotoxicity from known neuropathic agents (e.g., taxanes, platinums, and vinca alkaloids) causing damage to the peripheral nervous system. CIPN can present as sensory, motor, or autonomic symptoms, such as muscle weakness and balance impairments. Currently, there are no treatment or prevention methods for CIPN. The purpose of this case series was to assess the therapeutic effects of a high velocity resistance training (HVRT), or power training, in women diagnosed and treated for cancer, who presented with CIPN by measuring balance, functional performance, neuropathy, quality of life …

Embracing Professional Bravery And Inclusion: Overcoming Imposter Syndrome And Advancing Oncology Physical Therapy, Christopher M. Wilson
Oncology Rehabilitation in Practice
Oncology physical therapists (PTs) and physical therapist assistants (PTAs) play a crucial role in cancer care but often struggle with imposter syndrome, which can hinder professional confidence and interdisciplinary collaboration. Addressing these feelings is essential to ensuring optimal patient outcomes and advancing the field of oncology rehabilitation. This article explores the importance of mentorship, inclusivity, and professional bravery in overcoming self-doubt and advocating for the recognition of oncology rehabilitation within healthcare systems. By fostering a welcoming professional community and proactively seeking leadership opportunities, PTs and PTAs can enhance patient care and establish their essential role in oncology treatment. The future …
Challenging Race-Based Health Care Discrimination: A New Private Right Of Action, Aaron Pinkett
Challenging Race-Based Health Care Discrimination: A New Private Right Of Action, Aaron Pinkett
Northwestern University Law Review
The Hippocratic Oath calls on doctors to “do no harm.” Yet we know from extensive public health research that clinicians repeatedly cause harm to Black patients by dismissing their medical concerns, misdiagnosing them, and undertreating their pain. These practices of differential treatment for Black patients have led to steadily increasing racial disparities in health care outcomes throughout the United States. Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits this type of disparate impact, but modern Supreme Court jurisprudence forecloses opportunities for affected parties to seek legal relief—despite the clearly established legislative intent of Title VI. However, another legal …

Topics in Exercise Science and Kinesiology
Topics in Exercise Science and Kinesiology Volume 6: Issue 1, Article 3, 2025. This case study examined the effects of stroboscopic vision training during an entire varsity softball season for a 16-year-old female. Stroboscopic vision training uses specialized glasses with crystallized fluid that flickers, intermittently impeding vision, a technique that enhances visual performance. The stroboscopic glasses were worn two to three times a week during hitting and fielding skills. The central hypothesis was that the stroboscopic vision training would enhance softball vision performance. The central hypothesis was tested using these specific aims: 1) batting statistics for a year with no …

Disc Edema Secondary To Sleep Apnea: A Case Report, Jeannette A. Wong-Powell Od
Optometric Clinical Practice
Background: Bilateral optic disc edema is associated with multiple systemic conditions of potentially dire consequences. Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is a common culprit and diagnosis of exclusion, which has been observed in multiple patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and raised questions of a pathophysiological link between the two.
Case Report: A 28-year-old Caucasian male with history of transient ischemic attack-like symptoms presented with bilateral disc edema prompting a multi-disciplinary work up that included imaging, lumbar puncture, laboratory analysis, neuroophthalmological, cardiological, and pulmonary evaluations that ultimately led to a diagnosis of OSA. The case is unique in that it followed …

An Uncharacteristic Case Presentation Of Functional Vision Disorder, Ramandeep Kaur Od, Theresa Zerilli-Zavgorodni Od, Nancy Shenouda-Awad Od
Optometric Clinical Practice
Background: Functional Vision Disorder (FVD), also commonly referred to as functional vision loss (FVL) or non-organic vision loss (NOVL), is defined as a visual acuity (VA) loss and/or visual field (VF) loss, without any identifiable ocular or cortical pathology. Many clinicians look at FVD as a diagnosis of exclusion and while it is imperative to rule out organic pathology, FVD diagnosis must be supported by clinical findings that prove normal visual function. Incorporating supplementary tests specific for demonstrating the integrity of the visual system and the non-organic nature of the symptoms will allow clinicians to be more confident when diagnosing …
A Case Report Of Vitreopapillary Traction Mistaken For Optic Disc Edema, Breyne Middleton Od, Drew Anderson Od
A Case Report Of Vitreopapillary Traction Mistaken For Optic Disc Edema, Breyne Middleton Od, Drew Anderson Od
Optometric Clinical Practice
Background: Traction of the optic disc occurs during incomplete detachment of the posterior vitreous from the peripapillary glial tissue. It can sometimes cause the appearance of disc edema and bilateral cases can be confused with papilledema or cause patients to be worked up for pseudotumor cerebri.
Case Report: A patient presented with an outside diagnosis of unilateral optic disc edema and was found in fact to have vitreopapillary traction.
Conclusion: Costly, ultimately unnecessary testing such as magnetic resonance imaging can be sometimes avoided if vitreopapillary traction is considered as a differential for disc edema. It can be easily identified with …

A Space-Occupying Lesion Manifesting As Unilateral Optic Disc Edema, Len V. Koh Od, Phd, Anna Wells Od, Lindsay Jansen Od
Optometric Clinical Practice
Background: Primary and secondary orbital diseases can arise from different tissues in the periorbital regions as space-occupying lesion leading to ophthalmic symptoms. Therefore, eye care providers are often the first encounter for these patients.
Case report: A 54-year-old Caucasian male presented as a new patient at the eye clinic with an incidental finding of edema of the left optic disc. After a thorough optometric evaluation, a referral was made to a local ear-nose-throat (ENT) specialist who confirmed a diagnosis of cavernous hemangioma by further neuroimaging. Surgical removal eventuated in resolution of disc edema with restoration of vision.
Conclusion: An insidious …

Journal of the Saudi Heart Association
Objectives: The optimal management approach for patients with cryptogenic stroke and patent foramen ovale (PFO) remains uncertain. Whether medical therapy—using antiplatelet agents or anticoagulants—or transcatheter device closure offers superior protection against stroke recurrence has been a topic of considerable debate. This systematic review aims to assess and compare the effectiveness of these two treatment strategies, incorporating recent studies to provide updated insights on the most effective approach to preventing recurrent cryptogenic stroke. Methodology: We systematically searched PubMed, Scopus, and Ovid database through December 2024. Eligible studies were randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs) comparing PFO closure versus medical therapy among patients …

Efficacy And Safety Of Concomitant Surgical Ablation During Mitral Valve Replacement: A Systematic Review, Omar Hamodat, Saif Almuzainy, Rand Yahya, Razan Alzaatreh, Samiullah Haroon, Salam Koniali
Journal of the Saudi Heart Association
Objectives: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common comorbidity in patients undergoing mitral valve surgery (MVS), significantly increasing the risk of thromboembolism, heart failure, and mortality. Surgical ablation has recently been given a Class IA recommendation for concomitant MVS, reinforcing its role in restoring sinus rhythm and improving outcomes in this population. However, concerns about procedural complexity, extended operative time, and postoperative risks have limited its widespread adoption. This systematic review aims to synthesize evidence from recent randomized controlled trials to evaluate the safety and efficacy of surgical ablation for AF in patients undergoing MVS, addressing critical gaps in current clinical …
