EVERY DAIRY farmer knows how much he spends on the treatment of cows affected with mastitis, but the actual loss in production is more difficult to estimate.

As part of the current mastitis research programme the Department of Agriculture's Animal and Dairying Divisions surveyed 37 dairy herds with a believed high incidence of mastitis.

Ovulation studies in Western Australia have indicated that increased lambing percentages in crossbred and Merino ewes could be expected from mating in February-April rather than December- January.

Such increases have been demonstrated in time of lambing trials with crossbred ewes, but had not been seen in Merino flocks until recently.

This report summarises the results of time of lambing trials with Merinos carried out at the Merredin and Wongan Hills Research Stations between 1963 and 1969.

West Australian Merino flocks average about 70 per cent, lambs marked each year. Reasons for this low percentage are that as many as 30 per cent, of ewes do not lamb, twinning rates are low and from 10 to 25 per cent, of lambs born die.

Among the research projects by the Department of Agriculture's Sheep and Wool Branch have been a number directed at the various stages of reproduction in the ewe. These have given some important leads on the causes of low lambing percentages.

Alcaptonuria And Ochronosis With Diabetes Mellitus And Mycosis Fungoides: A Case Report, Jamshed U. Haq, Roy B. Patton

A Negro woman with alcaptonuria, ochronosis, ochronotic arthropathy, diabetes mellitus and mycosis fungoides died of acute renal failure due to diabetic glomerulonephropathy and ochronotic nephrosis. The role of the renal lesions of ochronosis is presented in potentiating the effect of an underlying renal disease producing rapidly progressive kidney failure. The occurrence of ochronosis, diabetes mellitus and mycosis fungoides is apparently coincidental only. Special stains of tissue sections confirm the similarity of melanin and ochronotlc pigment.

Although several mechanisms have been proposed to explain the transport of hydrophylilc cations across lipoprotein barriers, the nature and identity of the carrier mechanism have not yet been elucidated. The present communication is concerned with a mechanism postulating that monoesterified phosphate on the inositol moiety of phosphatidyl inositol might provide anionic sites that function as cation carriers via a phosphorylation-dephosphorylation cycle, catalyzed in its simplest sequence by phosphatidyl inositol kinase and diphosphoinositide phosphomonoesterase activities. The generally accepted and most common mechanism of the pathogenesis of VSD is the failure of fusion of the conus ridges, atrioventricular cushions and the ventricular muscular septum. Our findings in a study of serial sections of the hearts of newborn gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) leads us to hypothesize a second, less common, mechanism for the development of VSD, i.e., an exaggeration of the normal process of resorption and atrophy which undermines the septal cusp of the tricuspid valve, thus separating it from the muscular septum. Cellular-level bone resorption was evaluated in 16 patients undergoing renal dialysis and in two with primary hyperparathyroidism, by quantitative histological means using tissue time markers. When averaged over periods greater than two weeks, the individual osteoclasts in these patients resorbed less bone in unit time than normal.

Promethazine-Chlorpromazine Combination In The Treatment Of Unmanageable Psychotic Patients, Armando R. Favazza

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Administering a combination of promethazine and chlorpromazine to patients with a "galloping psychosis" has an antipsychotic and tranquilizing effect which calms them down to a more manageable and less aggressive state. The drugs are chemically similar; promethazine's actions are strongly potentiated in the combination, so large doses must be given under careful supervision. Case histories demonstrate successful short term management of acutely psychotic, aggressive patients who were a danger to themselves and others.
