Marginal And Non-Marginal Persons In The Professions: A Comparative Study Of Recruitment In Law, Medicine, And Social Work*, Pranab Chatterjee
Marginal And Non-Marginal Persons In The Professions: A Comparative Study Of Recruitment In Law, Medicine, And Social Work*, Pranab Chatterjee
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
A sample of students from the Schools of Law, Medicine, and Social Work of a Midwestern University (N=1,319), which consisted of all students enrolled in these schools for over a given number of years, suggests that there are at least three discernible types of marginality which are related to the status of the given professions. Such marginality may depend on one or more of the following: class origin, academic performance, and sex roles. The students of social work are high in both class- and role- marginality, but are favorably comparable to law students in performance-marginality. The study suggests that prestige …

Delinquency Theories, Group Composition, Treatment Locus, And A Service-Research Model For 'Traditional' Social Work Agencies, Ronald A. Feldman, John S. Wodarski, Norman Flax, Mortimer Goodman
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Summary
Rehabilitative endeavors within correctional institutions have failed because of overpopulation, high costs, labelling and stigmatization of inmates, low transferability of treatment changes to the outside community, and deviant peer group composition. Community treatment programs have fared little better because they also entail client stigmatization and typically are conducted within the context of deviant peer groups. Consequently, in order to enhance the rehabilitative potential of community treatment, subsequent efforts should be conducted within "traditional" agencies and within pro-social peer groups. The emphasis upon "pro-social" rehabilitation environments does not posit any particular assets and/or liabilities of a given socio-economic stratum, thus …
Adolescent Pregnancy And Poverty: Implications For Social Policy, Clara L. Johnson
Adolescent Pregnancy And Poverty: Implications For Social Policy, Clara L. Johnson
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Excerpt from the full-text document:
Adolescent pregnancy, per se, has been devoted little consideration by clinical observers and empirical researchers. For the most part, such pregnancies have received attention only insofar as they have occurred without the moral and legal sanctions of matrimony. This concern with illegitimacy has had the effect of blinding theorists and researchers to a whole segment of the adolescent pregnant population--the married teenager. Further, the adverse effects of adolescent pregnancy have been shrouded by moral precepts.
From existing evidence there appears to be no doubt that the married teenage girl is an integral part of the …

Localization Of Deep Abscesses With Radioactive Isotopes: An Experimental Study, H. M. Allen, R. Berguer, L. A. Dusault, M. A. Block
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Life-endangering effects of deep abscesses make early and precise identification and localization important to permit adequate surgical drainage. An experiment was undertaken to study the feasibility of detecting abscesses by using leucocytes tagged with radioactive isotopes. For the labeling, 51chromium appeared preferable to 131iodine or 99technetium. Leucocytes so labelled will concentrate sufficiently in abscesses to permit identification of abscesses by scintillation scanning. For clinical application, techniques require further simplification and refinement to eliminate interference by collection of radioactive isotopes in the liver and spleen.
Statistics For Clinical Research, W. R. Mccrum
Statistics For Clinical Research, W. R. Mccrum
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
The purpose of this paper is to make understandable the use of statistics in the field of medicine, and to introduce to the clinician some new methods of statistics for drawing some reasonable conclusions based on the meager data usually available. There is, after all, only one valid use of statistics: to enable oneself to make a personal decision based on the information available.

Primary Biliary Cirrhosis With Systemic Sclerosis, Pedro A. Diaz, Bernard M. Schuman
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Two patients with combinedbilian/ cirrhosis and scleroderma are described. Both patients also presented features of the CRST syndrome, namely Raynaud's phenomenon, and telangiectasiae. Nine previously reported cases are reviewed and the clinical data suggest that a common underlying immunologic basis may account for both clinical conditions.

A Clinical Trial Of Tobramycin With Pharmacological And Microbiological Studies, Keith Burch, Richard D. Nichols, Edward L. Quinn, Frank Cox, Evelyn J. Fisher, T. Madhavan, Donald Pohlod
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Tobramycin, a new aminoglycoside antibiotic, was shown to be effective in vitroagainst Pseudomonas, Klebsiella, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacter, Proteus mirabilis, indole-positive Proteus, and Eshcherichia coli. It was shown to produce serum and urine concentrations similar to gentamicin when administered intramuscularly. Preliminary animal studies showed this agent to have nephrotoxic and ototoxic effects similar to gentamicin. In our studies, tobramycin was well tolerated and produced only two transient elevations in serum creatinine and no abnormalities in audiograms and vestibular function tests. It was effective in 10 of 12 susceptible infections, including 2 of 4 with Pseudomonas endocarditis. Tobramycin compared favorably with gentamicin …
Haversian And Endosteal Bone Formation Rates In Rib Biopsies Of 50 Patients With Senile And Postmenopausal Osteoporosis, Kent K. Wu
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Eleventh rib biopsies of 50 patients with senile and postmenopausal osteoporosis, studied by means of tetracycline bone labeling, revealed significant and similar although modest decreases In bone formation on the cortical-endosteal and haversian surfaces of the biopsies.

Studies On The Effect Of The Basal Diets In Pure Strain Rats I. Inbred Wistar Furth Rats, Subhkij Angsubhakorn, Makoto Miyamoto, Natth Bhamarapravati
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
This experiment was designed to study the semisynthetic basal diets in relation to the anatomical and physiological evaluations of the pure strain rats. The weanling age of fourty male and female Wistar Furth rats were used. The diets T, TJ, J and a commercial chow pellets had been fed to four separated groups for three months. In all groups, the growing rates of male rats were increased more rapidly than that of females. The commercial chow pellet group increased in body weigth more than Diet TJ, T and J groupe. the levels of blood sugar of all groups were not …
Histochemical Studies Of The Protein -Bound Thiol And Disulfide Groups In Piscian And Cephalopod Retina, Soomboon Srungboonmee
Histochemical Studies Of The Protein -Bound Thiol And Disulfide Groups In Piscian And Cephalopod Retina, Soomboon Srungboonmee
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
In comparative histochemical survey on the retinas of ten piscian species, paraffin sections were stained for cysteinyl thiol and cystinyl disulfide groups as well as for the basic groups on proteins. The routine hematoxylin-eosin staining was used for identification and orientation purposes. The piscian retinas were found for the first time to have the same pattern of thiol distribution reported in the literatues for other vertebrate classes. This is both very high density and relative concentration of protein thiol groups in the outer segments of the photoreceptors (rods and cones). The significant levels are found in the photoreceptor inner segments …
