Radical Hysterectomy For Carcinoma Of The Cervix, John J. Mikuta Jan 1975

Radical Hysterectomy For Carcinoma Of The Cervix, John J. Mikuta

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Radical hysterectomy refers to the removal of the uterus and cervix and, in addition, to the removal of the upper one-half to one-third of the vagina, the parametria and the pelvic lymph nodes. This operation, which is commonly called the Wertheim operation, was actually first described by Clark in the United States and Ries in Germany. Wertheim's original operation for carcinoma of the cervix consisted only of a partial parametrial removal and removal of the upper one-third of the vagina. It did not include pelvic lymphadenectomy or the removal of the lateral portions of the parametria.

Some Practical Thoughts On Medical Malpractice, Robert L. Harris Jan 1975

Some Practical Thoughts On Medical Malpractice, Robert L. Harris

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Today more malpractice suits are being filed than ever before. Not only are more suits being filed but the amount of settlements and verdicts has significantly increased. Perhaps one of the primary reasons for this phenomenon is the consumerists movements. Obviously, the more consumer groups advocate consumer protection, and the more that juries render favorable verdicts, the better educated and aware of verdicts the consumer becomes. The result of this is that people become more litigation conscious. In Virginia, medical malpractice litigation appears to be just beginning to flourish in relation to other large urban areas in the North and …

Calcium And Phosphorus Requirements In Lupin Seed Rations For Pigs, N W. Godfrey, A. R. Mercy Jan 1975

Calcium And Phosphorus Requirements In Lupin Seed Rations For Pigs, N W. Godfrey, A. R. Mercy

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Seed of lupin varieties now available can be combined with wheat or barley to produce a balanced diet for growing/finishing pigs, and lupin seed has become a popular ingredient of pig rations.

As a protein concentrate, lupin seed is a satisfactory alternative to meatmeal, provided adequate amounts of calcium and phosphorus are added as supplements. Without the addition of these elements to rations of lupin seed and grain, a number of problems are likely to arise.

Trials at the Medina Pig Research Station have shown that Christmas Island rock phosphate is the cheapest and most convenient source of supplementary calcium …

Radiopharmaceutical Production And Quality Control, Jerry I. Hirsch Jan 1975

Radiopharmaceutical Production And Quality Control, Jerry I. Hirsch

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

With the development of shorter-lived, organ-specific radiopharmaceuticals, much of the manufacture and quality control of these products have shifted from commercial manufactures to individual nuclear medicine laboratories. Recognizing this fact, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is encouraging quality assurance by proposing that "an authorized physician may permit technicians and other paramedical personnel to perform the preparation and quality control testing of radiopharmaceuticals..." Cohen has categorized pharmaceutical controls into chemical, biological, and physical. Figure 1 is a diagram of these controls. In each control a degree of purity is implied and is often determined by comparison to standard.

The Diagnosis And Treatment Of Carcinoma Of The Thyroid, Richard H. Kirkland Jan 1975

The Diagnosis And Treatment Of Carcinoma Of The Thyroid, Richard H. Kirkland

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The major point I would like to make is that we should try to prevent thyroid carcinoma by administration of thyroid hormones to all patients with potentially high TSH and damaged-thyroid disease, using suppressive doses of levothyroxine. In my opinion, all patients who have thyroid disease should be treated with thyroid hormone indefinitely, once hyperthyroidism has been eliminated.

Differntial Diagnosis Of Hypertension, Andrew W. Dickinson Jr. Jan 1975

Differntial Diagnosis Of Hypertension, Andrew W. Dickinson Jr.

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The overwhelming majority of hypertensive patients have essential hypertension, which is a potent risk factor in producing vascular disease. Overall, it must be stated that the differential diagnosis of hypertension is a relatively minor factor in approaching the tremendous challenge of detecting and adequately treating the overwhelming majority of patients who are now undetected, untreated, or inadequately treated.

The Sheep Measles Control Programme, J B. White Jan 1975

The Sheep Measles Control Programme, J B. White

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

In the first seven months of 1968 Australia exported to the United States 17 747 tons of boned mutton; of this 2 198 tons, or 12.4 per cent, was condemned on arrival in that country.

The main cause of rejection was the presence of Cystkercus ovis cysts, the intermediate stage of the tapeworm Taenia ovis, of which the definitive host is the dog.

In 1969 the Western Australian Department of Agriculture decided to study the epidemiology of this disease.

This was the beginning of the work which would evolve into the 'Three Shire Control Programme'

Lupinosis And Rates Of Stocking Of Lupin Stubbles, K P. Croker, J. G. Allen, C. R. Lester, R. B. Guthrie Jan 1975

Lupinosis And Rates Of Stocking Of Lupin Stubbles, K P. Croker, J. G. Allen, C. R. Lester, R. B. Guthrie

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Lupin stubbles provide valuable summer sheep feed but under some conditions the fungus Phomopsis rossiana (for which lupins are the host plant) produces a toxin that causes lupinosis. Results from research at Badaingarra Research Station over the 1973-74 and 1974- 75 summers have shown that sheep liver damage associated with lupin stubble grazing is likely to be more severe at high than low stocking rates.

Wheat Rust Epidemics, A G P Brown, J. T. Reeves Jan 1975

Wheat Rust Epidemics, A G P Brown, J. T. Reeves

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Stem rust of wheat is probably the most damaging plant disease in the world. The rust fungus attacks stems, leaves and heads, producing characteristic red-brown pustules which affect the plant's ability to fill out the grain. Yield loss is directly related to the amount of rust in the crop and the length of time the crop is infected.

In Western Australia it is not uncommon to find rust on crops in mid-October, but usually there is negligible loss of yield. In fact this pattern is quite normal throughout the world: In general, rust arrives too late to cause an epidemic. …

The Effect Of Various Amounts Of Lard In The Rations To Early Weaned Pigs, Suchin Jalayanakupta Jan 1975

The Effect Of Various Amounts Of Lard In The Rations To Early Weaned Pigs, Suchin Jalayanakupta

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Several investigations have shown that very young piglets utilize dietary fat very badly. Peo et al. (1957) reported that there was no significant difference in feed efficiency due to dietary fat to piglets from an age of 8 days up to an age of 28 days. But the appearance of the piglets improved when fat was added to the rations. Eusebio et al. (1965) found that increased fat levels in the diet did not im- prove the efficiency of feed utilization, and in general added fat tended to decrease the rate of gain. Nielsen et al. (1970) have indicated that …

A Review On The So-Called "Pale, Soft, Exudative" (Spe) And "Muscular Degeneration" (Md), With Special Reference To Physical Training And Shorttime Physical Stress, Rabin Rattanaphani

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

"Pale, soft and exudate" pork has been known for a long time from experience among the meat inspectors. There has been a growing interest in studies of physilogical and biochemical factors of importance to the morphology as well as physical properties of pork. Existence of consider-able variations of these aspects of pork quality has been known for many years. Ludvigsen (1953) stated that such muscular changes greatly detoriorate the quality of product in meat packing industry. Furthermore, its keeping properties are greatly reduced even under the best storage condition. The term "pale, soft, exudate" is used in Rulcker (1968) work …
