Management Of Cutaneous Malignancy - A Review, Peyton E. Weary
Management Of Cutaneous Malignancy - A Review, Peyton E. Weary

Skin cancer is the most frequent type of cancer, accounting for about 20% of all cancers in the State of Virginia, and the most common type of skin cancer is the basal cell carcinoma. The basal cell carcinoma is a tumor which is not considered highly malignant because, in general, it does not metastasize, although there have been a few instances in which metastases have occurred. However, such lesions may be quite destructive at times. The typical basal cell carcinoma presents as a waxy, papular or nodular lesion which has a gelatinous or somewhat translucent appearance. Coursing across the surface …

In 1970, a multidisciplinary study was initiated by the Peruvian government under my direction to evaluate health conditions in a population group which had lived in a relatively stable environment for some 5,000 years. So far, American and Peruvian archeologists, anthropologists, radiologists, anatomic, oral, neuro- and clinical pathologists, chemists, immunologists, an otologist, and students from many different disciplines have been involved in the study which has been supported largely by the National Geographic Society with many individual contributions.

The Documentation Of Communicable Diseases In Peruvian Mummies, Harry P. Dalton, Marvin J. Allison, Alejandro Pezzia
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Communicable disease in Egyptian mummies was documented by Ruffer and Ferguson when early in this century they reported a case of smallpox. A case of schistosomiasis was also reported by Ruffer. Various intestinal parasites have been reported from mummies, and suggestive evidence has been presented for poliomyelitis and tuberculosis. Much of this work was done at a time when good laboratory techniques were not available.

Cerebrovascular disease is an exciting subject, so complex that we could devote 30 minutes to a discussion of aspirin, dipyridamole, and sulfinpyrazone and their potential actions in the prevention of thromboembolic events. A Classification and Outline of Cerebrovascular Disease II, published in the September-October 1975 issue of Stroke, depicts this complexity. The portion labeled “outline” describes some of the things summarized in this paper.

Recent Techniques In Cerebrospinal Fluid Examination, Vincent P. Calabrese

The existence of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) has been known since ancient times, but it was Cotugno who first described it in some detail in 1764. Quoting from his treatise, “In these experiments which I made on the bodies of nearly twenty adults, and which I repeated at different times, I could draw off freely from the hollow of the spine, four, or even sometimes five ounces of water: I commonly found it very clear in such subjects, though it sometimes inclined a little to a yellow color: but in fetus’ strangled in difficult labor, litte as it was, I …

Extracranial-Intracranial Vascular Shunt Procedures, Romas Sakalas
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Cerebrovascular occlusive disease has been and continues to be a leading cause of death and disability throughout the world. In the United States there are about 400,000 new strokes each year. Some 90% of strokes are a result of vascular occlusion of the extracranial circulation. Surgical treatment of occlusive vascular diseases, principally carotid endarterectomy, has become an accepted method of treatment of a large number of patients. However, only about 70% of patients with cerebrovascular disease have surgically accessible lesions in the extracranial circulation. The remaining 30% are a result of intracranial occlusive disease which cannot at present be treated …

A Survey Of Shearing Times, B R. Beetson
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
When do farmers in W.A. shear their sheep, and why do they selest the times they do?
A Department of Agriculture survey attempted to answer these questions, which have important implications for the wool industry.

Chlorofluorocarbon Effects On Cardiac, Pulmonary, And Respiratory Patients, Mildred E. Olson
Chlorofluorocarbon Effects On Cardiac, Pulmonary, And Respiratory Patients, Mildred E. Olson
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
Research results from studies of the physiological effects of aerosal propellants on animals and people are summarized. The papers selected for this summary were published between 1968 and 1975. Effects of the 15 chlorofluorocarbons used as propellants have been recorded on the cardiac, pulmonary and respiratory functions of a number of animal species as well as man. The fifteen propellants have been classified into four groups on the basis of their degree of toxicity. Fluorocarbon 11, the most frequently used propellant, is in group 1, the most toxic. The relative toxicity of each of the 14 other propellants compared with …
Measurement Of Permeability Of The Cell Membrane To Water, Richard Moore, Frederick Thornburgh, Donggyu Jin
Measurement Of Permeability Of The Cell Membrane To Water, Richard Moore, Frederick Thornburgh, Donggyu Jin
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
The water permeability was measured for blood cells from normal subjects and for blood cells from patients with leukemia. The method of measurement of the kinetics of water influx employed a stopped flow apparatus. The method of calculation of results was based on irreversible thermodynamics. The measurements and calculations were both performed with the assistance of a computer. The water permeability of the leukemic cells was decreased from normal, and the values were more variable than normal. Leukemia changes the structure of the cell membrane.
