Echocardiographic Evaluation Of Patients With Congestive Heart Failure, Mohsin Alam Sep 1986

Echocardiographic Evaluation Of Patients With Congestive Heart Failure, Mohsin Alam

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Echocardiography is a useful noninvasive test for evaluating patients with suspected heart failure and enlarged cardiac silhouette. This test can obtain the dimensions and wall thickness of all four cardiac chambers and can evaluate left ventricular function. The test results are reproducible, and in many instances the etiology of heart failure can be determined.

The Effect Of Aortic Valve Replacement On Left Ventricular Function In Patients With Aortic Valvular Disease, Tennyson Lee, Cathy L. Glick, Jeffrey B. Lakier, Sidney Goldstein Sep 1986

The Effect Of Aortic Valve Replacement On Left Ventricular Function In Patients With Aortic Valvular Disease, Tennyson Lee, Cathy L. Glick, Jeffrey B. Lakier, Sidney Goldstein

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Despite improved surgical techniques and survival in patients following aortic valve replacement for aortic stenosis and aortic insufficiency, the proper timing for surgery remains controversial. The incomplete reversibility of left ventricular dysfunction remains a concern, and postoperative improvement of left ventricular function is not consistently demonstrated. We studied 11 patients with aortic stenosis and nine patients with aortic insufficiency using angiographic and radioisotope assessment of left ventricular function preoperatively. Postoperative left ventricular function was assessed over nine to 13 months by radioisotope multiple-gated acquisition (MUGA) scan. All patients with impaired left ventricular function preoperatively showed slow but significant recovery toward …

Status Of Cardiac Transplantation With A Report Of The First Year's Experience At Henry Ford Hospital, Fraser M. Keith, Donald J. Magilligan Jr., Jeffrey B. Lakier, Conrad Drost Sep 1986

Status Of Cardiac Transplantation With A Report Of The First Year's Experience At Henry Ford Hospital, Fraser M. Keith, Donald J. Magilligan Jr., Jeffrey B. Lakier, Conrad Drost

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Cardiac transplantation is now widely accepted as effective treatment for selected patients with end-stage heart disease. Improvements in immunosuppressive treatment and monitoring in the past 15 years have resulted in impressive one-year and five-year survival rates of 80% and 60%. In general, survivors have enjoyed a considerably improved quality of life. A cardiac transplantation program was initiated at Henry Ford Hospital in 1985, and a total of 15 patients received heart transplants in the first 12 months. Fourteen patients are currently alive and well at various stages posttransplant. This early clinical success has prompted the consideration of both combined heart-lung …

The Sociology Of Alcoholism Counseling: A Social Worker's Perspective, Katherine Van Wormer Sep 1986

The Sociology Of Alcoholism Counseling: A Social Worker's Perspective, Katherine Van Wormer

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

An occupation - alcoholism counseling - strives to gain professional status. Still a field largely dominated by counselors who derive their status more from personal attributes - the fact of being recovering alcoholics - rather than from achievement of impersonally applied standards, chemical dependency counseling is in a state of flux. This sociological analysis examines recent developments in the field. Special emphasis is on roles for social workers.

Response Of Plasma Lh To Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone (Lrh) Treatment In Yong Swamp Buffalo Bulls, Peerasak Chantaraprateep, Maneewan Kamonpatana, Chainarong Lohachit, Annop Kunavongkrit, Prachin Virakul

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Investigation on response of LH to gonadotropin releasing hormone (LRH) treatment in 3 young swamp buffalo bulls was carried out every second month for 4 occasions. The animals were 16, 17 and 19 months old at the beginning of the trial. Response of plasma LH to LRH treatment was described in term of "total response" calculated from the area under the curve during 150 mn. It was shown that magnitude of LH response of the animals at the age group of 16-18 no. was higher than those in the older age groups (19-21 mo and 22-25 mo). Mean plasma LH …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Natural infection of rabies in three cases of swine were observed. The affected pigs were bitten by rabid dogs at various sites on the body. The incubation period in these three cases varied between 8-16 days. The sudden onset of fever, dilatation of the pupil and nervous signs were the consistent findings with short course of not more than 3 days, except one had a prolonged course of seven days. Ninety two percent of the reported case of rebies in Thailand were found in dogs. Cats come second to dog but share only around five percent of total. Only a …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Twenty cases of canine mammary gland neoplasia were clinico pathologically investigated at the Obstetrics, Gynaecology & Reproduction and Pathology units, small animal hospital, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Chulalongkorn University from November 1983 through October 1984. The diagnosis was based on a combination of history, clinical signs, radiographic and histological findings. Neoplasm were histologically classified according to Hampe and Misdorp (1974). All cases were treated by mastectomy, 14 in 17 (82.4%) cases had completely recovered and 3 in 17 (17.6%) cases died within 6 months after the operation. In addition, details of etiology, incidence and characteristics of neoplasm were also discussed.
