Trotter Review

The underrepresentation of minorities in the health and other professions has long cast a shadow over our nation's efforts to develop a more representative and productive society. Many laudable and durable programs nave been developed over the past 20 years to enlarge the presence of minorities in health careers, but these efforts have been unable to develop the infrastructure and momentum to produce and sustain an adequate number of minority professionals among the ranks of America's clinicians, researchers, and teachers. While there has been an increase in the numbers of African Americans, Hispanics and Native Americans enrolled in professional schools …

Increasing The Number Of Black Health Professionals: A Case Of Commitment And Belief In Students, Harold Horton Jun 1995

Increasing The Number Of Black Health Professionals: A Case Of Commitment And Belief In Students, Harold Horton

Trotter Review

The infant mortality rate is as high as ever in the Black community; dental care is yet nil or almost non-existent for the vast majority of Black children; and hypertension continues to be a major problem in the Black community. Hence, even as we approach the 21st Century, healthcare in the Black community is yet, as the song stated in the movie, Casablanca, "it's still the same old story." There is seldom, if ever, a single solution to a catastrophic problem, but some kinds of solutions do stand out as logical and effective. Training Black physicians, who would be privileged …

Disparities In The Health Care Status Of Women: Implications For Research, Marcia I. Wells-Lawson Jun 1995

Disparities In The Health Care Status Of Women: Implications For Research, Marcia I. Wells-Lawson

Trotter Review

Even a cursory review of data on the health status of women reveals striking differences by race. According to data from the National Center for Health Statistics, death rates among Black women from the three leading causes of death (cardiac disease, cancer and cerebrovascular disease) exceed those of white, Asian, Native American and Latina women for each age category from 45-84. With the exception of Black women, the death rates among white women from these diseases exceed those of other ethnic groups of women. Data on two of the risk factors for cardiac and cerebrovascular diseases (hypertension and obesity), show …

The Multicultural Mental Health Research Center (Mmhrc), Castellano Turner

Trotter Review

African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic/Latino Americans, and Native Americans have had relatively less access to the resources of society compared to white Americans. These resources include such things as educational and employment opportunities, political and economic power, and the goods and services that a prosperous society can produce. Health care is an important resource to which access is not equal for all groups. African Americans and other ethnic minority groups are, by most indices of health care access and utilization, underserved. Mental health services, in particular, have been shown to be less available to ethnic minority populations. Jones and Korchin, …

The Development Of Non-Invasive Lumbar Spinal Mobility Transformation Model And Assessment Tools For Clinical Applications, My Lee, Wk Chiou, Yh Lee, Wj Chen, Yh Lin

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Lumbar spinal flexion and extension motion was measured radiographically and from the back surface curvature (using motion analysis system) for evaluating lumbar spinal mobility (LSM). Twenty-four volunteers participated in this study and underwent lateral spinal radiographs and photographs in three postures (neutral, flexion and extension). The lumbar sacral angles (LSA) and the angles of each vertebral segment were obtained both from skin surface curvature and picture of X-ray. The results showed that the LSA and LSM remained the same either calculated based on Cobb angle or overly angle definition. To transform skin marker coordinates into corresponding vertebral body coordinates, a …

Cerebrovascular Accideut Complicated With Convulsive Syncope Casereport, Yi-Jung Hsin, Chau-Peng Leong, Fang-Yi Wu, Sarah Chau, Alice May-Kuen Wong

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Seizure is one of the complications after cerebrovascular accidents, but not all convulsions are epilepsy. Many other diseases such as vasovagal syncope, hypoglycemia and arrhythmia may cause seizure-like episodes. So, we must identify the actual cause to prevent inappropriate treatment. We report a 69 year-old male patient who was asmitted to rehabilitation department due to recurrent cerebrovascular accident with right hemiplegia. Loss of consciousness, myoclonic rhythmic jerk of left arm, upward gazing were noted frequently in upright and sitting position. After return to the lying position, the above symptoms and signs would disappear in few seconds. Antiepileptic dru as given to …

The aim of this study is to determine the effect of serum albumin level on the rehabilitation outcome in stroke patients. The criterias of patient studied included first stroke, unilateral weakness, length of stay greater than 2 weeks and free of uncontrolled medical problems (hypertensin, diabetes mellitus, cardiac disease) or major musculoskeletal disorders (contracture, amputation).75 patients with avarage age of 65-year-old completed this study. We checked the albumin level and functional status of the patients including Brunnstrom stage, trunk control and Barthel index score. Assessments were performed on admission and discharge to identify the correlation between albumin level and functional …

Feminization Of The Aids Epidemic, Mark S. Kaplan Jun 1995

Feminization Of The Aids Epidemic, Mark S. Kaplan

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Although males still constitute a substantial number of persons with AIDS, it is becoming clear that this is a disease affecting women and minority populations more adversely. Today women, while representing approximately 16 percent of all AIDS cases nationwide that are reported to the Centers for Disease Control, make up the fastest-growing segment of the population with AIDS. This article contends that AIDS is increasingly afflicting women who have little economic, political, or social power. Furthermore, misdirected public policy has been partly responsible for the greater incidence of the disease in certain regions and populations.

Endobronchial Intubation In Dogs(การใส่ท่อหลอดลมชนิดแยกในสุนัข), Pradit Somprakit, Jariya Lertakyamanee, Prem Choontanom, Suwannee Surasernivongse

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

This reports on 4 cases of canine anesthesia carried out for a thoracoscopy workshop. Since one lung needed to be collapsed for the surgical procedure, endo-bronchial tubes had to be used. For a 15-kg dog, a Portex left-sided double-lumen endobronchial tube, number 6, was easily passed without having to use a laryngoscope. The length from tip to angle of the mouth was 29 cm Auscultation was checked in the same way as is done in the human. Separate lung ventilation was successfully done on all dogs. Post mortem bronchoscopy showed that the trachea divided into 2 main bronchi at the …

Attention Deficit Disorder And Case Management: Infusing Macro Social Work Practice, Dennis D. Long Jun 1995

Attention Deficit Disorder And Case Management: Infusing Macro Social Work Practice, Dennis D. Long

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Intervention with children with attention deficit disorders is complex and requires change at multiple system levels using a social work perspective. Case management, macro social work practice, time allocation issues, the structure of a professional self, constraints in expanding a narrow definition of the social worker, and specific macro level intervention areas for social workers are examined in this context.

Acute Toxicity Of Carbaryl On Giant Pearch (Lates Calcarifer)(พิษเฉียบพลันของคาร์บาริลในปลากะพงขาว(Lates Calcarifer)), Supatra Srichairat, Supattra Jiamsak, Jirasak Tangtrongpiros

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The acute toxicity of carbaryl was determined for giant pearch (Lates calcarifer) in static exposure systems. The mean 96-h LC was 2.95 mg/litre. All exposed fishes at first showed symptoms of carbaryl intoxication such as hyperexcitability, decrease in swimming performance, loss of coordination movement and reduction of food intake. Severity of intoxication and mortality rate were found to be dose dependent. Decreased cholinesterase activity in muscle and brain of all treated fishes was also observed withincreasing of carbaryl concentration.

Is The Motor Point Better In Reproducibility Of Surface Emg Signal?, Alice May-Kuen Wong, Fuk-Tan Tang, Shiu-Ching Lee, Wen-Ko Chiou

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

The EMG signals acquired from acupoint Fu Tu (a motor point in rectus femoris) were reported to be more stable and reproducible than those from the middle point between greater trochanter to tibio-femoral junction of knee in standing position. It was different from the concept of better surface EMG signal from muscle belly than motor point. For studying whether the motor point is a better surface electrode location for stability and reproducibility of EMG signal, 6 normal subjects were examined at right quadriceps in isometric and isokinetic contractions by Cybex 340 dynamometer. The active electrodes of surface electromyography (S-EMG) were placed …

Cervical Spondylosis With Unilateral Symmptomatic Radiculopathy And Radiculopathy On The Asymptomatic Side, Hwa-Lin Shou, Shei-Song Hsu, Rai-Chi Chan, Tao-Chan Hsu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

This study has the following purposes: (1) to inquire the incidence of radiculopathy on the asymptomatic side in the cervical spondylotic patients with unilateral symptomatic radiculopathy. (2) to inquire the relationship between asymptomatic side and symptomatic side in the unilateral symptomatic radiculopathic patients due to cervical spondylosis. All subjects has been studied by motor and sensory nerve conduction test, and electromyography (EMG) for muscles supplied by roots from C-5 to T-l levels bilaterally. The results showed that the incidence of radiculopathy and the EMG abnormalities on the asymptomatic side correlated well with the EMG abnormalities on the symptomatic side, but …
