Network Meta-Analysis Of Randomized Controlled Trials Comparing Safety And Efficacy Of Pharmacological Treatments In Reducing Pain During Intrauterine Device Insertion, Ahmed Ashour, Ahmed H. Saad, Iman Elzahaby
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Conflicting evidence exists regarding the effectiveness of pharmacological interventions in reducing pain during intrauterine device (IUD) insertion. This study aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of various analgesics and to rank their effectiveness. A total of 71 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving 10,870 women were included. Data were sourced from PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and other databases up to September 2023. Analyses were performed using the Netmeta package in R, with results reported as standardized mean differences (SMDs) and risk ratios (RRs), each with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Lidocaine 4% gel (5 mL) emerged as the most effective …

Salivary Matrix Metalloproteinase-7, Human Beta-Defensin 1, And Mucin-4 As Potential Diagnostic Biomarkers In Periodontal Disease: A Review, Haider Mohammed Shaloom, Omar Husham Ali
Maaen Journal for Medical Sciences
Periodontal diseases are a group of chronic, immune-mediated inflammatory conditions affecting the periodontium, the supportive structures of the teeth. With severe forms affecting nearly 20% of the worldwide adult population, these diseases represent a significant global health challenge. Their impact extends beyond the oral cavity, as periodontitis is a recognized risk factor for systemic conditions like cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus. Characterized by the progressive destruction of tooth-supporting tissues, early diagnosis is crucial to prevent tooth loss. However, conventional diagnostic methods primarily quantify historical tissue damage rather than indicating current disease activity or predicting future progression. To overcome these limitations, …

Compelled Contraception, Lars Noah
Compelled Contraception, Lars Noah
West Virginia Law Review
Can the federal government insist that people use contraceptives? It may come as a surprise to learn that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has done just that as a condition for allowing access to some pharmaceutical products that create a serious risk of birth defects. Over the last few decades, the agency has demanded that patients using certain teratogenic agents—now numbering over a dozen drugs prescribed for a variety of conditions, ranging from severe acne and psoriasis to multiple myeloma and pulmonary hypertension—agree to avoid becoming pregnant, sometimes for years after completing their course of treatment. Undoubtedly the …

Digital Journal of Clinical Medicine
Background: Cervical cancer remains the fourth most common cancer among women globally and a leading cause of cancer-related mortality in India. Despite being largely preventable through screening, uptake remains suboptimal due to socio-cultural and systemic barriers.
Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 300 women aged ≥20 years residing in urban and rural areas of Mysuru. Data were collected using a pre-tested, semi-structured questionnaire and analyzed with SPSS version 30.
Results: Awareness of cervical cancer was reported by 90% of participants and of screening methods by 80%. However, only 21% had ever undergone screening and 17% within the preceding …

Backing up your office computer data and encompassing your practice management software, your imaging software and everything your office needs to treat patients and do business are essential, for you never know when a disaster might strike, making it crucial to have daily backups of electronic records and office data, preferably both cloud and physical storage. One very prudent recommendation offered to me by the New York City Small Business Service grant program after Hurricane Sandy destroyed my office 13 years ago was to have a battery backup system in my newly built office. This would improve resiliency during a …

Towards Accessibility In Healthcare For Individuals With And Without Hearing Loss: Evaluation Of Usability, Fit, And Communicative Effectiveness Of A Transparent N95 Mask Prototype, Samuel R. Atcherson, Brooklyn Schultes, Jeanne Hahne, Barbara Debaun, Chris Showell
JADARA
The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the necessity of effective face masks in both public and healthcare settings for mitigating the spread of disease. However, traditional face masks impede communication, posing significant challenges for approximately 13% of the general population and 10% of healthcare and social assistance workers who have hearing loss and who rely on lipreading and other non-verbal cues. Traditional surgical masks and N95 respirator masks serve important roles in healthcare, but they differ in levels of protection. Currently, a transparent surgical mask is available, but not an N95 version. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the usability, fit, …

Subcutaneous Facial Emphysema And Pneumomediastinum Following A Class V Dental Restoration: A Case Report, Jonathan Tran Dds, Brian M. Will, Sidney B. Eisig D.D.S., Facs
The New York State Dental Journal
Cervicofacial subcutaneous emphysema is an uncommon but potentially life-threatening complication of dental procedures. While classically associated with surgical extractions performed with dental high-speed handpieces instead of surgical rear-exhaust handpieces, it has been documented following other dental procedures, including restorative and endodontic treatments. As cervicofacial air emphysema spreads, it may reach the retropharyngeal space, which connects to the mediastinum, leading to pneumomediastinum and a risk for mediastinitis, which carries a high mortality rate. We present a case of cervicofacial subcutaneous emphysema leading to pneumomediastinum following a Class V restoration on tooth #28 to highlight the importance of recognizing this underdiagnosed complication.

AI's applications span radiographic analysis (identifying pathologies, enhancing diagnostic precision), treatment planning (simulating outcomes, designing aligners), and streamlining administrative tasks (voice recognition for notes, optimized scheduling). The author emphasizes that AI should be viewed as an augmentative tool to human capabilities, not a replacement for clinical judgment, especially in complex cases. It also highlights the critical considerations of data privacy (HIPAA compliance) and the enduring value of the relationship-driven nature of dentistry. Ultimately, the most successful dentists will be those who combine emerging technologies …

Peanut allergies pose significant health risks globally, with an increasing prevalence observed over the past two decades. Accidental exposures to peanuts can lead to severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, prompting the exploration of innovative therapeutic approaches to mitigate these risks. This literature review examines the potential use of peanut proteins embedded within toothpaste formulations as a novel avenue for inducing tolerance in individuals with peanut allergies. It includes recent studies and clinical trials in oral immunotherapy, focusing on mechanisms of action, safety profiles and long-term outcomes associated with controlled allergen exposure. Key findings suggest that oral mucosal therapy, particularly sublingual …

The New York State Dental Journal
Gorlin-Goltz syndrome is a hereditary autosomal dominant disorder. It has multiple clinical manifestations caused by mutation in the patched gene (PTCH), which is responsible for the growth and development of healthy tissue and for regulating the cell cycle. Early diagnosis of the condition and an extended duration of follow-up are essential to prevent complications, such as basal cell carcinomas and facial deformities, leading to a more favorable prognosis. This case was diagnosed with the presence of three major and two minor criteria, which confirmed the condition. We hereby report a case of a young male patient diagnosed by clinical, radiological …

Parental separation during childhood leads to long-lasting psychological and socioemotional impact on the lives of emerging adults as they transition into higher education. The long-term effects of childhood parental separation on college students' academic performance, physical health, and overall mental wellbeing are well-documented. However, students can develop resilience to cope with challenging family and life experiences and even demonstrate post-traumatic growth. Post-traumatic growth refers to the positive changes and experiences college students discover after enduring life disruptions, such as being separated from their parents at an early age. To better understand the connection between parental separation and posttraumatic growth, a …
