Predicting Respiratory Status In Patients With Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, Rong-Bin Hong, Tyng-Guey Wang, Chih-Whei Lu, Jin-Shin Lai, I-Nan Lien
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
The life expectancy of individuals with untreated Duchenne muscular dystrophy(DMD) is around 18-19 years. The cause of their death is mostly from respiratory complications. Early detection of respiratory function will provide the opportunity of early management and prolong their life span. This study included 30 patients with DMD in a period of three years and took a cross-section design. All the data were obtained by telephone interview with the patients or their family. Nineteen of 30 patients accepted functional evaluation in Brooke’s grading scale and pulmonary function test(PFT). Ten of these 19 patients received nocturnal breathing monitor including O2 saturation and …

Lower Limb Length Discrepancy Caused By Lumbar Epidural Lipomatosis-- A Casereport And Review Of Literature, Mei-Hui Kuo, Chau-Peng Leong
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Epidural lipomatosis is resulted from abnormal accumulation of unencapsulated fat in the epidural space. A case with idiopathic spinal lipomatosis is commonly seen in the following situations: steroid treatment, endocrinopathy, and obesity. Interestingly, a young male without the previous three conditions developed idiopathic spinal epidural lipomatosis. He was observed with lower limb length discrepancy and functional scoliosis. This patient was diagnosed by the method of magnetic resonance imaging and later received a variety of treatments according to his symptoms. Since there was no progressive neurological deficit, his problem of functional scoliosis was corrected by elevating his left heel by 2 cm. …

The Biography Of A Scale: Contextual Factors That Influence The Measurement Of Family Functioning, Ludwig Geismar
The Biography Of A Scale: Contextual Factors That Influence The Measurement Of Family Functioning, Ludwig Geismar
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The subject of instrument relevance is addressed by examining issues that have arisen in the use of a single scale over a forty year period. The issues revolve around the impact of varying social conditions, changing ethos, differential respondent receptiveness, and evolving research technology. Extended use of an instrument, it is argued, yields information that transcends the conventional techniques for testing instrument adequacy. The lack of opportunities in social work for accessing information on extended use of measurement tools is due, among other factors, to a preoccupation with working on subjects that are new and original and to a lack …

The Kinetic Assessment Of Sit-To-Stand In Stroke Patients And Its Relationship To Fall, Pao-Tsai Cheng, Shu-Hsia Wu, Mei-Yun Liaw, Pay-Shin Lin, May-Kuen Wong, Hsieh-Ching Chen, Fuk-Tan Tang
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Fall has been reported as a major cause of morbidity, hospitalization and mortality of older people. Stroke patients are more prone to fall than non-stroke subjects, because of the pathological conditions inposing upon the physiological aging process. Since fall is so frequent, fall prevention strategies should therefore be developed and included in rehabilitation programs.Falls are associated with many physical and environmental factors. Excluding tripping, many of the falls in stroke patients occurred during the patients changing their positions, such as standing up, sitting down or initiation of steps. Therefore, the purpose of this study is focus on the kinetic analysis …

Electrodiagnosis Of Median-To-Ulnar Nerve Anastomosis And Anomalous Innervation Of The Intrinsic Hand Muscles, Chih-Liang Wu, Huann Chang, Pi-Chang Sun, Su-Fen Liao, Rai-Chi Chan
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Communication between the median and ulnar nerves is a common anomaly in the forearm (Martin-Gruber anastomosis, MGA). The knowledge of these anastomoses and the resulting anomalous innervation patterns is of crucial importance to the clinicians and electromyographers in the performance of nerve conduction and electromyographic studies in normal patients and those with peripheral nerve lesions. One hundred forearms (fifty cases) were examined for median-to-ulnar or ulnar-to-median nerve anastomoses using surface electrodes. We found a motor median-to-ulnar nerve anastomosis occurring in 12% of forearms studied. The incidence of innervation of the different intrinsic hand muscles: abductor pollicis brevis (APB) 17%; abductor …

Evaluation Of The Efficacy Of Dl-Methionine And Methoonine Hydroxy Analogue In Broiler Diets, S. Kijparkorn, A. Suriyasomboon, C. Nuengjamnong
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Nine hundred and sixty day-old chicks of both sexes were divided into 24 groups of 40 birds each and fed for 42 days. Diets were prepared and fed over two phases (1-21 and 22-42 days of age). They were calculated to be deficient either in methionine and sulfur amino acids (negative control diet) or supplemented with 0.24% DL-Methionine (DL-M) or 0.37% Methionine Hydroxy Analogue (MHA). Weight gain and feed intake were calculated so that an evaluation of the efficacy of the 2 sources of methionine could be made. A significant response (P<0.05) in the average weight gain over negative controls (0.55+0.01 kg/bird) was found for DL-M supplemented diets (0.59± 0.01 kg/bird) in phase I, whereas MHA (0.57±0.01kg/bird) did not show any improvement. The feed conversion ratio of DL-M (1.80±0.03) and MHA (1.82±0.04) was significantly different to the negative control (1.93±0.03). There were no significant differences in all performances during phase II. The overall results showed that broilers fed with 0.24% DL-Methionine or 0.37% Methionine Hydroxy Analogue fortified rations showed the same growth rates. It may be concluded that MHA was 65% as efficient as DL-methionine in broiler chicks during the 1-21 day old period of their lives.
