Mycobacterium chimaera is a slow-growing, non-tuberculous mycobacterium (NTM) that belongs to the Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC). It first emerged as a pathogen after being associated with infections in patients who underwent cardiothoracic surgery when patients were getting exposed to heater cooler units, especially those requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) or prosthetic valve placement. We report an atypical presentation of M. chimaera infection in a patient with COPD, but no prior history of cardiac surgery or immunosuppression.

This case report underscores the critical interplay between adrenal crisis and seizure activity, emphasizing the importance of rapid recognition and management of this life-threatening condition. Adrenal crisis, characterized by severe hypotension and electrolyte disturbances, often manifests with nonspecific symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, and altered consciousness, which can obscure diagnosis, especially in pediatric and young adult populations. The report details a 21-year-old female with a complex endocrinologic background who developed seizures precipitated by an adrenal crisis triggered by gastroenteritis and compounded by medication noncompliance. Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis (TPP) is a rare but life-threatening cause of acute flaccid paralysis associated with hypokalemia. Although more common in males and individuals of Asian descent, it may present atypically in young females and be easily misdiagnosed. We report a case of a 30-year-old female who presented with acute quadriparesis. Extensive neuromuscular evaluation initially pointed toward Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), but subsequent investigations revealed profound hypokalemia. Further workup confirmed thyrotoxicosis as the underlying cause. Prompt potassium replacement and initiation of antithyroid therapy led to complete clinical recovery. Objective: Coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) is a cornerstone in the assessment of coronary artery disease. Despite technological advancements, balancing radiation does with diagnostic image quality remains a challenge. This study evaluates whether assessing preliminary non-enhanced CT scans allows for the optimization of CCTA gating protocols to enhance image quality and minimize radiation exposure.

The new LSU Special Care Clinic is fully functioning and helping to train dental and dental hygiene students in how to best care for patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The clinic is located on the second floor of the Administration Building, thanks to new dean, Dr. John Gallo. A soft (and snowy!) opening in January 2025 was followed by a grand opening on May 9th. The clinic is staffed by first through fourth-year dental students, with leadership from members of the Special Care Dentistry Association (SCDA) student chapter.

This paper examines the role and evolution of Native Medical Auxiliaries (NMAs) in Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, during British colonial rule between the 1920s and 1960s. It argues that NMAs were not merely subordinates within the colonial medical system but active agents who negotiated and blended Western medical practices with indigenous healing knowledge. Drawing on archival records and oral histories, the paper finds that NMAs filled critical gaps in healthcare delivery, particularly in rural areas, while simultaneously preserving local therapeutic traditions. This poem was written after reflecting on time spent working in hospitals and medical environments both stateside and while deployed. In these spaces, alarms are constant—bells, monitors, and vibrating alerts competing for attention. Over time, the noise becomes familiar, and clinicians often struggle with what is known as alarm fatigue, where the urgency of each signal begins to dull. In that quiet realization, I found myself asking a simple question: who are these alarms for? The poem explores that moment of awareness and the effort to reconnect the sound of the bell with the life behind it.

Tennis is a global sport with effective coaches being essential to the continued appeal, therefore the work of the coach developers within the International Tennis Federation (ITF) is crucial. This research examined the work and aspirations of coach developers in tennis using in-depth interviews with 10 ITF coach developers. Subsequently, we developed detailed pen portraits of two ITF coach developers at different levels of experience and engagement in order to highlight any differences in work, objectives or ambition.
