This study aimed to identify the expression levels of some candidate genes for mastitis resistance (LTF and BRCA1), milk yield (POU1F1 and IGF-1), and milk quality (PPARγ and CSN2) in different feeding systems (pen- and pasture-based) used for Damascus goats. Milk samples were taken from all goats in both pen and pasture groups at 4 times, at the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th months of the study. The size of salivary glands, acinar structure, and secretion particularities differ from one species to another and are influenced by diet and environment. In order to investigate whether there are histological or histochemical differences in the salivary glands of animals from the same species, bred in identical conditions of environment and diet, we assessed two laboratory rat strains. The objective of this study was to evaluate the anaesthetic effects on young hamadryas baboons (Papio hamadryas) of xylazine-ketamine (XK) compared to diazepam-ketamine (DK). Six healthy young male hamadryas baboons were first premedicated with xylazine HCl (0.5 mg/kg, IM) and anaesthetised 20 min later with ketamine (10 mg/kg, IM). After a 10-day washout period, the hamadryas baboons were premedicated with diazepam (1 mg/kg, IM) and anaesthetised 20 min later with ketamine (10 mg/kg, IM). The aim of this study was to investigate the preference of side and standing in relationship with milking characteristics of crossbred cows in a double-sided herringbone milking parlour. Seventy-two crossbred cows were milked in an 8 × 2 low-line automated herringbone milking parlour having automatic cluster removal settings for 45 milking sessions. There was considerable variation among individuals in the consistency of side choice (χ$^{2}$ = 1.414, P = 0.234). This study was conducted to detect ectoparasites of hares (Lepus europaeus Pallas) between the years of 2003 and 2015 in Konya Province, Turkey. In this period, 75 hares shot by hunters were examined for ectoparasites macroscopically. Ectoparasites detected on the hares were collected with pliers and stored in tubes containing 70% ethanol. The ticks were identified under a stereo zoom microscope. Other parasites were cleared in 10% KOH, rinsed in distilled water, and transferred to 70%, 80%, and 99% ethanol, respectively, and mounted on slides in Canada balsam. The effects of diminazene aceturate (DA), levamisole, and/or vitamin A on hematological and clinical parameters of West African dwarf sheep experimentally infected with Trypanosoma brucei were studied. Twenty-four adult sheep were randomly assigned to 6 groups of 4 animals. They were infected with 1 × 10$^{6}$ trypanosomes intravenously (groups 2?6) or were uninfected (group 1). Treatment was administered 2 weeks post infection (PI) in all treated groups, except group 5, which was treated 3 weeks PI. Group 2 (positive control) received 7 mg/kg DA. The aim was to investigate behaviors and stress responses of rams and ewes in an intensive fattening period. Out-of-breeding rams (Hemsin = 10, Karakul = 10) and ewes (Hemsin = 8, Karakul = 10) were used in the study. Sheep and rams belonging to each breed were placed into four different pens. Behavioral observations (individual, feeding, abnormal self-grooming behaviors) were performed 2 days a week for two groups a day for 1 h. Pestiviruses, which are distributed worldwide, may cause losses in sheep and goat populations. The current seroprevalence and circulation of pestiviruses in small ruminants of the South Marmara Region of Turkey were investigated. A total of 607 blood samples were collected from 22 different flocks in 4 different provinces, and 24 necropsy materials were investigated. Pestivirus seroprevalence in sheep and goats was determined by virus neutralization test against the NADL strain of bovine viral diarrhea virus. The mean antibody titer was 3.5, while the overall seropositivity rate was 32.78% (199/607). Seronegativity was markedly more prevalent in goats. The mean detected antibody …

The effects of the claw size used on the shoes of the traditional sea snail beam trawl and the effect of the steel wire used between the shoes on catching efficiency were investigated on the Samsun coast of the Black Sea. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and seroprevalence of hypodermosis and to calculate the economic loss associated with hide damage in the cattle on the Kars Plateau, Turkey. A total of 6563 randomly selected cattle were examined by skin palpation from 1 April to 31 May 2014. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of supplementation with Effective Microorganisms (EM) on the morphology and the morphometry of the intestine, and on proliferation activity of crypt cells in Japanese quails. The EM group (16 birds) received EM for 30 days in water (3 L/1000 L of water) and in feed (5 kg/1000 kg of feed) mixed with standard diet. The aim of this study was to investigate anesthetic potency and acute toxicity of 2-phenoxyethanol (2PE) and 1-phenoxy-2- propanol (PP) for common carp. During efficacy tests, individual phases of anesthesia and recovery, as well as behavior and survival rates, were determined. As effective time for anesthesia and recovery, 3 and 10 min respectively were chosen. Determined efficient concentrations were 600 mg L?1 for 2PE and 415 and 460 mg L ?1 for PP. Although liquid manure is a valuable fertiliser, it may pose a microbiological threat due to spreading of bacteria resistant to various antibiotics. Cysticercosis/taeniasis is one of the neglected parasitic zoonoses in developing countries like India. A study was conducted for a period of 7 years from 2010 to 2017 during which 13,596 pig and 1238 human samples were screened to learn the exact scenario of cysticercosis/taeniasis in the different regions of Maharashtra State. Prevalence of cysticercosis/taeniasis in pigs and humans was recorded using various diagnostic methods such as meat inspection and serological methods involving ELISA. The aim of this study was to investigate the in vitro effects of the addition of three essential oils, mainly cuminaldehyde, eugenol, and thymol to alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) silage on gas production, digestibility, and metabolic energy. The essential oils were added at 0 ppm (controls) and 100 ppm (group 1), 200 ppm (group 2), and 300 ppm (group 3) with three replications. The cumulative amount of gas resulting from the addition of the three essential oils at the 96th h of incubation was significantly lower than that of the control group (P < 0.05). The cumulative amount of gas production at the 96th h of incubation with thymol ranged from 184.63 mL/g to 217.38 mL/g. In conclusion, this study showed that the addition of different amounts of cuminaldehyde, eugenol, and thymol to alfalfa silage reduced the amount of in vitro gas production. Therefore, these treatments can potentially reduce environmental pollution from ruminal digestion. However, the use of increasing levels of essential oils reduced the amounts of digestible organic matter and metabolic energy. Additional studies are necessary to reveal the effects of these essential oils on in vivo ruminal fermentation by measuring changes in feed consumption and productivity.

A 2.5-year-old small male Cavalier King Charles spaniel was brought to Ondokuz Mayıs University's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Animal Hospital with symptoms of severe watery diarrhea, pain during defecation, intermittent cough, vomiting, and emaciation. Examination of the fecal smear revealed moderate infection of Strongyloides stercoralis larvae and two adult females. We investigated the effects of sex and breeding season on the morphological and histological structures of the interdigital gland in Awassi sheep (Ovis aries). Forelimbs and hind limbs were collected from 10 males and 10 females in both the breeding (June-July) and nonbreeding (November-December) seasons. This study was carried out to determine flea species infesting small, wild rodents and insectivorous wild mammals of the Aegean Region in Turkey. A total of 52 small, wild mammals, comprising one insectivorous and four rodent species, namely Crocidura suaveolens, Mus macedonicus, Apodemus flavicollis, Microtus levis, and Apodemus witherbyi, were captured. Fleas were collected, preserved in 70% alcohol, and labelled for identification in the field. In the laboratory, they were cleared in 10% KOH and mounted with Hoyer's medium. Fowl adenovirus serotype 4 (FAdV-4) is a new emerging viral disease of chickens worldwide. It causes inclusion body hepatitis and hepatitis-hydropericardium syndrome. Little is known about its prevalence in the Middle East. Here we report the prevalence of FAdV-4 in five chicken farms in eastern Saudi Arabia. High mortality rates were reported from birds from those five farms at 15 weeks of age. Gross examination revealed typical hydropericardium syndrome and accumulation of jelly-like materials in the pericardial cavities. We isolated FAdV-4 by using embryonated chicken egg inoculation. The role of the renin-angiotensin aldosterone system in the genesis of hypertension between nonhunting dogs and hunting dogs of various breeds was comparatively studied in the city of Tuzla (Bosnia and Herzegovina). Sixty dogs were divided into four subgroups based on different age categories. Hypertension was recorded in 21 dogs or in 35% of examined dogs. Fourteen dogs had mild (23.3%), 5 dogs had moderate (8.3%), and 2 dogs had severe hypertension (3.3%). The most cases of hypertension (n = 9) were recorded in hunting dogs aged from 9 to 12 years. To identify metabolic indicators in blood and urine for early pregnancy in dairy cows (32 crossbred and 12 purebred zebu cows), blood and urine samples were collected on days 0, 15, 20, 24, and 30 postbreeding. The plasma progesterone (P4) concentration was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in pregnant cows than in nonpregnant cows after day 15. The plasma blood urea nitrogen (BUN) concentration remained significantly (P < 0.05) higher in pregnant cows on day 15. The plasma concentrations of cholesterol, glucose, protein, and nonesterified fatty acid (NEFA) did not differ between pregnant and nonpregnant cows. The urine protein concentration was significantly higher (P < 0.05) in pregnant zebu cows compared to nonpregnant zebu cows. Plasma P4 was significantly (P < 0.001) and positively associated with urine glucose levels in nonpregnant crossbred cows. In nonpregnant zebu cows, the correlation between P4 was positive (P < 0.05) with plasma cholesterol, glucose, urine glucose, and protein. In pregnant zebu cows, P4 was negatively associated with plasma BUN and positively (P < 0.05) associated with both plasma and urine glucose levels. Thus, urinary proteins can be used as a noninvasive tool for early nonpregnancy confirmation in cows with very high accuracy at around 24 days after artificial insemination.
