Systemic candidiasis is an opportunistic infection caused by Candida species in animals. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the pathogenicity of different doses of Candida zeylanoides in BALB/c mice. Thirty mice were selected in this study. Different doses of the yeast were intravenously inoculated to the animals. At first, clinical signs and survival time of infected mice were recorded. Then both mycological and histological examinations were performed for detection of Candida in different tissues. In the DELIVER (Full project title: Design of effective and sustainable control strategies for liver fluke in Europe) project the objective was to analyze 3 recombinant antigens for their capacity to induce a satisfied immune response in sheep, to challenge the animals with metacercariae of Fasciola hepatica, and to observe their immune response and protection from the parasitosis. The aim of this study was to investigate whether hantaviruses, cowpox viruses, or Leptospira infections were prevalent in Microtus hartingi trapped in Kırşehir Province, located in Central Anatolia, Turkey. Leptospira spp. was detected in 20 of the 43 (46.5%) Microtus hartingi kidney samples and confirmed by nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of the 16S ribosomal RNA gene. Five of the 20 Leptospira spp. PCR positive amplicons were sequenced, analyzed, and confirmed as Leptospira spp. This is the first study to genetically characterize Leptospira in Microtus hartingi in Turkey. Increased lipid peroxidation due to reactive oxygen species (ROS)-induced oxidative stress has been demonstrated in the neoplastic mammary tissue of dogs with malignant mammary tumors. Dietary factors implicated in ROS production may influence mammary cancer incidence or prognosis. The purpose of this study was to establish the fertility trends in dairy cows in Central Croatia and compare the trends and causes of infertility and subfertility during a 5-year period. A total of 12,060 Simmental cows and heifers were included in the study. The animals were examined by vaginoscopy, transrectal palpation, and ultrasonography on a regular basis. Fertility problems that included infertility and subfertility were diagnosed in 56.61% of all observed animals. Relationship Between Dead Pupa Removal And Season And Productivity Of Honey Bee (Apis Mellifera, Hymenoptera: Apidae) Colonies, Ahmet Güler, Hakan Toy

This study was conducted to evaluate the dead pupae removal behaviour of 90 honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) colonies during the beekeeping season and the relationships between removal and colony productivity. The liquid nitrogen technique was used in May, June, July, August, and September. The number of removed pupae was significantly (P < 0.01) correlated with the month and changed throughout the season. The highest cleaning efficiency of the colonies were recorded in July and September, and the lowest were in May and August. While the average dead pupae removal was 83.75% in the 90 colonies, the percentage of removed pupae varied between 56.4% and 99.3% during the 5 months. There were significant positive correlations between dead pupae removal and honey yield (P < 0.01; r = 0.295), bee wax production (P < 0.01; r = 0.334), and adult worker bee population (P < 0.05; r = 0.233). No correlation was found between dead pupae removal and brood production and average temperature. Although hygienic behaviour has positive effects on many characters relating to productivity in untreated breeding populations, it is affected by many biotic and abiotic factors. This behaviour decreases with many stressful conditions (wasps, Merops sp., predators, honey harvesting) and increases with colony strength during the season.

Recovery rate and quality of oocytes were investigated from abattoir collected ovaries with and without corpora lutea (CL). The oocytes were categorized into four grades: grade-A, grade-B, grade-C, and grade-D based on the presence of the cumulus cells complex around the oocytes. The number of oocytes per ovary were 1.7 ±0.1 and 1.5 ±0.1, obtained from ovaries without CL and with CL, respectively. Recovery rate of different grades of oocytes from ovaries with CL and without CL were almost identical.

Two steers (228 ± 4.5 kg) equipped with \"T\" type cannulas in the proximal duodenum, duodenal-jejunal juncture, and distal ileum were used to measure transit time of chyme within the duodenum and jejunum. In order to investigate whether porcine circovirus 2b (PCV2b) can be replicated in the spermatids of mice and whether semen from PCV2b-infected male mice can induce reproductive failure in female mice, 10 male Kunming mice were intraperitoneally inoculated with PCV2b, and 10 female Kunming mice were artificial inseminated with semen from the PCV2b-inoculated male mice. This clinical case concerns a male dog of Pointer breed, 10 years of age. The clinical examination revealed severe tenderness and a tension in the abdominal walls. The ultrasound examination detected fluid in the peritoneal cavity. The fluid collected from the peritoneal cavity displayed typical features of exudative fluid. Single nucleotide polymorphisms of the 5' regulatory region of the FSHR gene were detected in 3 goat breeds (Jining Grey, Boer, and Inner Mongolia Cashmere) by the polymerase chain reaction-single-strand conformation polymorphism method, and its effects on litter size in Jining Grey goats were also evaluated. Canine leishmaniasis (CanL) is a severe, intracellular parasitic zoonosis and is an endemic complaint in Iran. Dogs are considered the reservoir host for Leishmania infantum in the Old World. The aims of this study were to evaluate the relation between anti-Leishmania antibody titers (IgG) and skin symptoms of CanL in naturally affected dogs and to assess the correlation of IgG_1 and IgG_2 subclasses of titers with these symptoms. The Newcastle disease vaccine strain I (ND I vaccine) was reconstituted using a 3-component combined adjuvant solution containing Astragalus polysaccharide (APS), levamisole (LMS), and selenoprotein (Se). Our focus has been to study and compare the anatomical helical computed tomography (CT) features of the normal rabbit liver with its native cross-sectional anatomy. Helical CT was used for scanning the cranial part of the abdominal cavity. The slice thickness was 5 mm. Frozen transversal anatomic cross-sections with a thickness of 10 mm were obtained from the cranial abdominal part of 4 animals following euthanasia. The objective of this study was to investigate the semen quality of 3 chicken breeds: the red jungle fowl, domestic chicken, and bantam chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus). A total of 27 cocks, including 9 cocks each of red jungle fowl, domestic chicken, and bantam chicken, were used in this study. Semen was collected once a week by dorso-abdominal massage method. Mastitis is recognized as one of the most important diseases affecting the dairy industry. The antibiotic susceptibility test is important to achieve accurate treatment in subclinical mastitis. This study was conducted to determine the presence of contagious mastitis agents (Streptococcus agalactiae and Staphylococcus aureus) in 270 bovine milk samples collected from 132 dairy cows with subclinical mastitis in 15 different dairy farms located in the Marmara Region of Turkey. This study was carried out to create a chicken meat consumption profile, including factors that influenced buying habits and consumer preferences. Data were obtained from surveys conducted face-to-face with 450 household heads in the city center of Ankara. In the study, the average size of the household and the total monthly household consumption of chicken meat were determined to be 3.9 persons and 3.31 kg, respectively. The majority of participants claimed that their average chicken meat consumption would increase by 82.0% if their total real household income increased by 100%. In this study, 500 honey samples (with combs) were collected directly from the hives in various parts of İstanbul. The presence and the interactions of different microbiological and parasitological parameters (coliforms, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Ascosphaera apis, Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus fumigatus, Paenibacillus larvae, Melissococcus pluton, and Nosema spp.) were investigated. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of lactic acid bacteria and their bacteriocins in detoxifying aflatoxins. Aflatoxin B1 detoxification abilities of lactic acid bacteria both in liquid culture and as concentrated pellets, their bacteriocins, and mixtures of these 3 were evaluated. Mixed cultures of the 2 bacteria were also investigated. Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactococcus lactis were separately able to detoxify aflatoxin B_1 in solutions. Lb. plantarum had a better detoxification rate (46%) than Lc. lactis (27%). After heat treatment, only the groups that contained pellets released the bound toxin back into the solution. Three pseudoscorpions identified as Neobisium validum were found in a honeybee hive in Bursa Province of Turkey. They were collected from the bottom of the hive but no relationship between the pseudoscorpions and bees was observed. This case is a first report of pseudoscorpions in a honeybee hive from Turkey.

Following deaths in a flock of Golden Pheasants, Chrysolophus pictus, in Mazandaran Province, northern Iran, during June 2008, necropsies of dead birds were undertaken and revealed a heavy mixed infection of Heterakis isolonche and H. gallinarum in the caeca, which were heavily swollen with gross nodules on the surface. Infected caeca were studied histopathologically and surviving birds were treated with fenbendazole 2.5% (20 mg/kg), with a second course 3 weeks later. No further mortality was seen in the flock. This is the first documented report of Heterakis isolonche in Iran, and also the first report of a concurrent infection of …

Dorsal luxation of the scapula is a rare orthopedic disorder caused by traumatic rupture of the muscles supporting the scapula. The presented case consisted of an adult cat in which luxation of the scapula had occurred due to trauma. During clinical examination, dorsal displacement of the scapula was evident upon manipulation of the limb. Radiological examination did not reveal any fractures or other concurrent injuries. In the surgical treatment of the patient, the muscles were sutured in place. The patient regained its normal gait without any complications within 4 weeks.

Most traits of economic importance in livestock are quantitative traits. This means that they are influenced by a large number of genes, each contributing a small effect, scattered across the genome. A comparison between a rare old breed and a common breed of ovine prion protein (PrP) genotype profiles was performed in 3 Romanian sheep flocks. The total number of animals used in the research was 698 sheep, of which 53 were Merino breed (MB) rams, 12 were Tigaie with Black Head breed (TBHB) rams, 340 were MB ewes, and 293 were TBHB ewes. The PrP genotype was investigated by identification of codons 136, 154, and 171 and by gene sequencing between codons 101 and 227. The aim of this experiment was to estimate possible associations between FAM13A1, OPN, LAP3, and HCAP-G genotypes and some milk performance traits, like daily milk yields (kg), protein content (%), and fat content (%). The study included 181 Jersey cows. The polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism and artificial constructed restriction sites methods were used to identify genotypes. The minor allele frequencies were as follow: FAM13A1 G/A 0.34, FAM13A1 A/C 0.44, OPN T/C 0.22, OPN G/T 0.38, LAP3 0.07, and HCAP-G 0.49.
