Abdominal aortic calcification (AAC), a marker of subclinical cardiovascular disease, has previously shown to be associated with low BMD and fracture. However, it remains unclear whether AAC is associated with trabecular bone score (TBS), a gray-level textural measure, or whether it predicts fracture risk independent of this measure. Here, we examined the cross-sectional association of AAC scored using a validated machine learning algorithm (ML-AAC24) with TBS, and their simultaneous associations with incident fractures in 7691 individuals (93.4% women) through the Manitoba BMD Registry (mean age 75.3 yr). Background. – BK polyomavirus (BKPyV) is a common opportunistic infection in kidney transplant recipients, typically reactivating in the context of immunosuppression. Although asymptomatic in immunocompetent individuals, reactivation in transplant recipients can cause BKPyV-associated nephropathy (BKPyVAN), a leading cause of graft dysfunction and loss. BKPyV viremia affects approximately 10%–15% of transplant recipients, and once BKPyVAN is established, the risk of graft failure can exceed 50%. The current standard of care involves immunosuppression reduction to restore virus-specific immunity, but this approach increases the risk of acute and chronic rejection. Purpose: Childhood cancer survivors (CCS) are at risk of long-term skeletal muscle deficits following intensive therapies during critical periods of growth. This review aimed to synthesize approaches for assessing muscle quantity, quality, and function in CCS and to quantify deficits relative to healthy peers. Methods: A systematic search was conducted in CINAHL, Embase, PubMed, SPORTDiscus, and Web of Science from inception to June 2024, with an update in November 2025. Studies including CCS who had completed cancer treatment and reported measures of muscle quantity, quality, or physical function were eligible. Background: Abdominal aortic calcification (AAC) is a subclinical measure of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). AAC can be captured on lateral spine images obtained from bone density machines during routine osteoporosis screening. Identifying individuals with AAC provides a new opportunity to prevent disease progression. Objectives: The aim of the study was to externally validate a machine learning-derived AAC 24-point algorithm (ML-AAC24) with incident ASCVD. Methods: Middle-aged individuals from the UK Biobank Imaging Study with lateral spine images, obtained via dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry, were included. ML-AAC24 scores were grouped as low (<2), moderate (2 to <6), and high (≥6). Linked health records were used to identify ASCVD-associated events, including hospitalizations and death. Results: Among 53,611 participants (52% female; mean age 65 years), 78.2% had low, 16.4% had moderate, and 5.4% had high ML-AAC24. After excluding people with prevalent ASCVD or missing data, 1,163 (2.3%) of 50,923 people had an incident ASCVD event over a median follow-up of 4.1 [3.0-5.5] years. In age- and sex-adjusted analysis, compared to those with low ML-AAC24, those with moderate (HR: 1.80 [95% CI: 1.57-2.08]) and high ML-AAC24 (HR: 2.87 [95% CI: 2.39-3.44]) had a higher HR for incident ASCVD. Results remained comparable after adjustment for established ASCVD risk factors. Consistent patterns were observed when considering incident coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, and stroke. Conclusions: Assessing ML-AAC24 on lateral spine images offers a new and promising screening method to identify people with higher risk of incident ASVD events.

Background and Aims: Between 200,000 and 300,000 children with sickle cell disease (SCD) are born in Africa every year, with 75%–80% of these children living in sub-Saharan Africa. In newborns with SCD, significant iron accumulations may develop because of their increased risk of requiring multiple blood transfusions. Objectives: To assess intra-session reliability of isometric and isotonic shoulder external rotation (ER) strength tests and to compare their outcomes. Methods: Thirty-eight healthy subjects (19 females; 19 males; 25.7 ± 6.0 years; 175 ± 9 cm; 70.3 ± 11.4 kg) completed a shoulder ER strength assessment including Prone and Standing ER Isometric tests and Seated 5 repetition maximum (RM) ER tests. Normality was checked with the Shapiro–Wilk test. Reliability was assessed using the CV and ICC (3, k, 95% CI). Linear mixed models examined sex and dominance effects. Correlations and multiple regression tested associations between tests (p < 0.05). Results: All tests performed displayed “excellent” reliability scores (CV from 1.9 to 3.1% and ICC from 0.970 to 0.994). No significant effect of dominance was observed in any strength test. Males showed significantly higher values than females in both Prone (3.8% higher, p < 0.001) and Standing (2.7% higher, p = 0.003) isometric ER strength tests. Prone and Standing isometric tests were moderately correlated (r = 0.62, 95% CI [0.46, 0.74], p < 0.001). A regression model explained 52.4% of the variance in Seated 5 RM ER strength (R2 = 0.524, …

Objective To estimate the incidence and identify risk factors for hospital-presenting self-harm and suicide among justice-involved adolescents serving community-based orders in New South Wales, Australia. Method We conducted a population-based retrospective cohort study of 44,887 adolescents aged 10–17 years at first proven offence who received community-based orders between 1994 and 2020. Hospital and emergency department records were linked with mortality, child protection, and justice data. Background: Residual kidney function in patients receiving haemodialysis is associated with improved survival, reduced cardiovascular risk and better quality of life. Yet, clinical guidelines on its preservation are limited, and local practices remain unclear. Objective: Residential Medication Management Review (RMMR) is a government-funded pharmacist-led service to address medication-related problems, such as polypharmacy, which are prevalent in aged care. Despite known benefits, concerns remain about the service's effective implementation to benefit residents. We aimed to explore stakeholders' perspectives of the service and identify challenges and improvement opportunities. Method: A qualitative study was conducted using individual interviews and focus groups with 21 stakeholders, including general practitioners (GPs), a nurse practitioner, registered nurses, pharmacists and consumers. Purpose: The present study aimed to gain a deeper understanding of how oncology healthcare professionals’ (HCPs) manage sleep disturbances. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 oncology HCPs (medical oncologists, oncology nurse practitioners, clinical nurse consultants) working in metropolitan Perth, Western Australia. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to understand oncology HCPs’ perspectives on treating sleep disturbances, explore challenges and barriers to their management, as well as opportunities for improvement. Globally, regional and remote communities are burdened by both an increased prevalence and worse prognosis of many infectious and chronic diseases. However, largely owing to logistical challenges, these communities are under-represented in clinical trials and research studies. Background & Aims: Iron deficiency (ID) is a global health condition that predominately affects women. Although oral iron supplementation is an effective treatment strategy for this issue, gastrointestinal complaints are common, and if persistent, may lead to poor compliance. The efficacy of different iron formulations which claim to improve tolerance is unclear. This study assessed the efficacy and tolerability of ferrous sulphate (FS) and iron (III)-hydroxide polymaltose complex (IPC) supplementation in three different cohorts of women.. Methods: This study implemented a 12-week, single-blind, randomized controlled trial. Eligible participants had a serum ferritin concentration of <50 μg/L and met specific inclusion criteria to be enrolled to either the athlete, pre-menopausal or post-menopausal groups. Participants were randomized to receive FS (equivalent to 105 mg elemental iron) plus sodium ascorbate or IPC (equivalent to 100 mg elemental iron) daily. Venous blood samples were collected at baseline, 4-, 8- and 12-weeks of supplementation. A daily questionnaire was completed throughout the study period, documenting supplement tolerance (number and severity of symptoms), exercise load, menstrual characteristics, and supplement compliance. Acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM) with pleural metastases is rare and under-recognised. We report an 86-year-old woman with progressive dyspnoea and pleuritic chest pain. 18 months ago, she was diagnosed with stage IIC ALM of the right heel, and was treated with wide local excision, but she declined adjuvant therapy. Imaging demonstrated a large left pleural effusion with diffuse pleural thickening, pulmonary mass, and hepatic metastases. Brownish pleural fluid, along with thoracoscopic identification of multiple pigmented nodules, led to a histologically confirmed diagnosis. Background: Burn injury induces a prolonged inflammatory response that may contribute to long-term metabolic dysfunction. Exercise is known to reduce inflammation in various clinical populations; however, its effect on chronic post-burn inflammation remains unclear. Purpose: Building on the identification of ABCB5 as a marker of limbal stem cells (LSCs), this study examines CD63, a newly identified molecule co-expressed with ABCB5 in limbal epithelial cells, to define its role in maintaining corneal epithelial cell identity. Methods: RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) was performed on flow cytometry–sorted Abcb5-positive and Abcb5-negative murine corneal epithelial cells. CD63 expression in human corneal tissue was assessed by immunostaining. Background/Objectives: Acute exercise remodels many interconnected biochemical pathways in metabolically active tissues. This remodeling involves the activation of the energy-sensing AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) to maintain cellular energy homeostasis. Objectives: Seeing Voices was an interprofessional, technology-enabled, large-scale, teaching and learning event developed to address the need to improve voice students’ knowledge of laryngeal anatomy and physiology toward understanding and maintaining vocal health. Seeing Voices trialed a novel interprofessional educational approach, collected both quantitative and qualitative data about student experiences of laryngostroboscopic examination, and built a databank of laryngeal recordings for future student learning.
