Relationship Between Body Mass Index And Hydration Status In Air Force Rotc Cadets, Ivan P. Flores, Michael M. Rodriguez, Alma I. Martinez, Haydin C. Pazdur, Angela Haven A. Barandino, Christopher R. Hill, April Karlinsky, Jason Ng
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC) program prepares young individuals for their future as officers in the United States Air Force. This is a unique population because these cadets are college students who must maintain physical fitness through regular group exercise training. Previous research has identified that proper hydration is important to optimize training sessions. However, it is unknown whether the body size of this population is connected to their hydration status before and after exercise. PURPOSE: To examine the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and hydration status and the differences between BMI classifications of AFROTC cadets. …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) is a training program that gives individuals the opportunity to become leaders in and outside of the classroom while they prepare for their careers as officers in the United States Air Force or Space Force. This is a unique group of college students training to become tactical operators, which involves participating in regular group physical training. To optimize training, cadets should incorporate proper hydration strategies. Ideally, fluid intake volume should match sweat losses, however ROTC cadets’ hydration practices remain unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship …

Air Force ROTC cadets are college students simultaneously receiving training to serve as officers in the United States Air Force. Regular group exercise is part of this training program, and good hydration habits would be conducive to optimizing the exercise sessions. However, it is unclear whether exercise intensity might influence this special population's voluntary drinking behaviors in a manner that is sufficient for optimizing exercise training sessions. PURPOSE: Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between exercise intensity and voluntary fluid intake in Air Force ROTC cadets during a typical training session. METHODS: Nine …

An age-related decline in musculoskeletal health and physical function (PF) may contribute to frailty and lead to increased fall risk (FR). Traditional cardiac rehabilitation (CR) programs prioritize aerobic exercise conditioning with less emphasis on FR screening and prevention with related individualized PF training. PURPOSE: This study evaluated the prevalence of self-reported FR among patients enrolled in an early outpatient CR program. METHODS: Fifty-one adults (80% male; age 74.9 ± 6.7 years) agreed to complete the screening portion of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Stop Elderly Accidents, Deaths, and Injuries (STEADI) tool kit, which consisted of 12 …

Input Of Sex Data Does Not Affect Metabolic Variables Returned From The Cosmed K5 Unit During Exercise, Olivia R. Perez, Michael W.H Wong, Dustin W. Davis, James W. Navalta
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
There is a sex-data gap in sport and exercise, which results in an underrepresentation of female participants and increases the possibility of misgendering individuals who identify other than the female-male binary. A potential barrier to gender inclusivity could be that common exercise science equipment and software are limited to binary options for sex, excluding people who identify as gender minorities. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether sex data input into the COSMED K5 had a direct effect on metabolic outcome variables. METHODS: Seven adult participants (age = 29.6 ± 10.8 years, height = 172.6 ± 8.5 …

The Effects Of Music On Force Production, Pleasure, Perceived Exertion, Fatigue, And Recovery During An Isokinetic Strength Task, Ainsley Nommensen, Leighton Jones, Zachary Zenko
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Music is frequently listened to during exercise to enhance the overall experience. Prior research suggests promising effects of music for enhancing pleasure experienced during exercise, reducing perceived exertion, reducing fatigue, and enhancing recovery. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to offer new insights into how self-selected music can impact affective responses, perceptions of exertion and fatigue, and performance on a resistance exercise task. METHODS: A total of 34 participants (21 women and 13 men, mean age: 22 ± 6 years) completed two sessions of isokinetic resistance exercise in a counterbalanced order. In the experimental session, participants listened …

Erα Governs The Sexual Dimorphism In Hsp72-Mediated Control Of Mitochondrial Function, Exercise Capacity, And Insulin Sensitivity In Mice, Noelle Morrow, Amanda Lin, Zhenqi Zhou, Hirotaka Iwasaki, Brian Drew, Mark Febbraio, Andrea Hevener
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
HSP72 is a chaperone protein upregulated during exercise. Levels are reduced in aging and obesity, and increased levels are correlated with improvements in metabolic health in male mice and humans. Male HSP72KO mice have increased body fat, decreased insulin sensitivity, and a loss of mitochondrial quality control. Specifically, male KO mice have increased cytosolic Parkin levels, but the protein is unable to move to the mitochondria resulting in enlarged, hyperfused mitochondria associated with metabolic dysfunction. PURPOSE: To investigate the role of HSP72 in female mice to better understand the sexual dimorphism involved in the heat shock response. METHODS: …

Sprinting is a crucial component of success in American football regardless of the position group. PURPOSE: To evaluate the relationship between muscle volume (MV) of the lower body muscles and sprint performance among different AF position groups. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis from the HAMIR study. The study included NCAA Division I AF players aged 18 and older who were active on the roster and not injured at the time of data collection. Positions were grouped as follows: the combo group (linebackers and tight ends), the big group (offensive and defensive linemen), and the skill group (defensive …
Influence Of Fitness On Moderate-Intensity Blood Pressure Responses In Normotensive And Hypertensive Individuals, Joseph Larsen, Jayson Gifford
Influence Of Fitness On Moderate-Intensity Blood Pressure Responses In Normotensive And Hypertensive Individuals, Joseph Larsen, Jayson Gifford
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Early detection and treatment is important in cardiovascular disease because arteries are often occluded by 75% or more before symptoms become apparent. Exercise blood pressure has been shown to be predictive of future cardiovascular disease independent of resting blood pressure. However, many factors affecting exercise blood pressure need to be further investigated and described before exercise blood pressure can become a common practice. PURPOSE: To investigate how exercise intensity and fitness influence the blood pressure response in hypertensive and normotensive individuals. We hypothesized that hypertensive participants would have greater increases in exercise blood pressure than normotensive subjects during a …

ABSTRACT
The loading forces experienced during exercise may cause morphological and vascularization changes in the Achilles tendon. The Achilles tendons of runners decrease in cross-sectional area (CSA) after a distance run. Understanding acute morphological changes as a result of single bouts of exercise gives insight to clinicians about how to organize and recommend training sessions and recovery and may inform injury risk. Purpose: This study aims to characterize changes in tendon thickness, CSA, and blood flow of Division I collegiate football (FB) players before and after a bout of strengthening exercise. Methods: Twenty-nine participants (height: 189±5.62 cm, weight: 106±19.0 kg, …

ABSTRACT
Several job industries require substantial prolonged physical exertion in hot environmental conditions which increases the risk of heat-related illnesses. Endotoxemia, a hallmark of exertional heat stroke, is defined by increased levels of circulating lipopolysaccharides, often caused by gastrointestinal (GI) injury and subsequent permeability. Caffeine is a stimulant frequently used among …
