The Effect Of Acute Consumption Of Overtime Essential Amino Acids Sports Drink On Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness In The Older Sedentary Population, Andi Johnson, Grant Wagner, Abraham Gomez, Jerene Yazzie, Klaudia Szych, Matthew A. Barlow Phd

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Essential amino acids are necessary for nutrition whether obtained by digestion of proteins or by oral supplementation of amino acids. The elderly experience loss of skeletal muscles and decrease in their strength and function, which can lead to poor quality of life. Increased quantity and quality of proteins stimulates muscle protein synthesis that can help combat this natural aging process. Purpose: The aim of this study was to see if consumption of essential amino acid drink high concentrations of leucin (2040 mg/serving) during exercise will attenuate the condition of Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness in the elderly. Also, we aimed to …

Stratton, Jacob Dellinger, Marqui Benavides, Baylor A. Johnson, Abegale D. Williams, Sarah White, Christian Rodriguez, Bradley Vincent, Grant M. Tinsley Feb 2020

Relationship Between Rate And Composition Of Mass Gain During Overfeeding Plus Resistance Training, Robert W. Smith, Patrick S. Harty, Matthew T. Stratton, Jacob Dellinger, Marqui Benavides, Baylor A. Johnson, Abegale D. Williams, Sarah White, Christian Rodriguez, Bradley Vincent, Grant M. Tinsley

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

A common goal among athletes is to gain additional body mass (BM), particularly fat-free mass (FFM), in order to improve muscle strength, power, and overall performance. Athletes typically undergo BM accretion over a specific period of time in conjunction with high-volume resistance training (RT) in order to preferentially gain FFM and promote concomitant muscular performance improvements. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the rate of BM gain and the proportion of BM gained as FFM versus fat mass (FM) during a 6-week period of overfeeding and resistance training. METHODS: 21 resistance-trained males …

The Effect Of Short-Term Adventure-Sport Curriculum On The Level Of Mental Toughness Of Undergraduate Students, Katie Moscati, Jordan Boyea, Andreas Stamatis, Steven Maynard Feb 2020

The Effect Of Short-Term Adventure-Sport Curriculum On The Level Of Mental Toughness Of Undergraduate Students, Katie Moscati, Jordan Boyea, Andreas Stamatis, Steven Maynard

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Mental toughness (MT) has been associated with both higher academic and physical performance. Adventure sports studies involve exposure to exploratory and risk-taking activities aiming to facilitate positive psychological characteristics. Although such programs are frequently promoted for this purpose, there is lack of empirical evidence concerning the effects of such a curriculum on the levels of MT in undergraduate students. PURPOSE: To examine the efficacy of an adventure-sport curriculum on the levels of MT of freshmen, undergraduate students throughout their first semester in the program. Hypothesis: The MT levels of the participants increase at the end of the semester. METHODS: In …

The Effects Of A Dynamic Warm-Up On Exercise-Induced Redistribution Of Monocytes And Natural Killer Cells, Mahmoud T. Elzayat, Emily C. Lavoy Feb 2020

The Effects Of A Dynamic Warm-Up On Exercise-Induced Redistribution Of Monocytes And Natural Killer Cells, Mahmoud T. Elzayat, Emily C. Lavoy

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Proportions of leukocyte subsets in peripheral blood are altered post-exercise and return to baseline during recovery. This is caused in part by exercise-induced increases in stress hormones. Inclusion of a pre-exercise dynamic warm-up has been shown to decrease markers of cardiovascular stress during exercise. However, whether a warm-up can attenuate changes to the immune system with exercise has not yet been examined PURPOSE: To compare monocyte and natural killer (NK) cell mobilization following a bout of high intensity aerobic exercise with and without a dynamic pre-exercise warm-up. METHODS: 16 physically active adults (7 women, 27.8±4.4 years) cycled 30 …

A Dietary Assessment Of Mid-Spectrum Chronic Kidney Disease, Kathleen E. Adair, Jeffrey S. Forsse, Matthew Peterson, Jeffery L. Heileson Feb 2020

A Dietary Assessment Of Mid-Spectrum Chronic Kidney Disease, Kathleen E. Adair, Jeffrey S. Forsse, Matthew Peterson, Jeffery L. Heileson

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Diets of adult individuals with mid-spectrum (stages III and IV) Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) remain understudied. The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans food patterns based on the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) in concert with the National Kidney Foundation Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (NKF KDOQI) guidelines are advised to individuals with CKD. Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) remains the best method for tracking CKD progression, yet relationships between self-reported dietary intake and eGFR are understudied. PURPOSE: To assess the self-reported dietary pattern in patients with stage III or IV CKD in contrast to the RDA and NKF KDOQI dietary guidelines …

Influence Of Acute Water Ingestion On Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis Estimates Of Body Composition, Jacob R. Dellinger, Baylor A. Johnson, Matthew T. Stratton, Patrick S. Harty, Marqui Benavides, Sarah White, Abegale D. Williams, Robert W. Smith, Grant M. Tinsley Feb 2020

Influence Of Acute Water Ingestion On Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis Estimates Of Body Composition, Jacob R. Dellinger, Baylor A. Johnson, Matthew T. Stratton, Patrick S. Harty, Marqui Benavides, Sarah White, Abegale D. Williams, Robert W. Smith, Grant M. Tinsley

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Body composition estimation is a significant component of health and fitness assessments. Multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (MFBIA) uses multiple electrical frequencies that travel through body tissues in order to estimate fluid content and body composition. Prior to body composition assessments, it is common to implement a wet fast (i.e., a fasting period that allows water intake); however, the influence of a wet fast as compared to a dry fast (i.e., disallowing water intake) is relatively unknown. PURPOSE: To determine the effects of acute water consumption on MFBIA body composition estimates. METHODS: A randomized crossover study was conducted in …

Perceived Wellness Of College Professors, Faculty And Staff, Molly E. Fenoglio, Andrew A. Wolfe Feb 2020

Perceived Wellness Of College Professors, Faculty And Staff, Molly E. Fenoglio, Andrew A. Wolfe

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

With the current rise in various concerning health conditions, researchers are placing greater importance on overall wellness. The World Health Organization defines wellness as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Additionally, wellness is thought to be a crucial component to living a higher quality of life. Previous studies suggest that physical activity could play a large role in overall perceived wellness; however, current research has yet to explore this relationship. PURPOSE: Therefore, the purpose of the current investigation was to determine the relationship between physical wellness and the …

Differences In Bone Mineral Density At The Femoral Neck And Lumbar Regions Across Female Soccer Players, Olympic Lifters And Power Lifters, Woohyoung Jeon, John Michael Harrison, Philip Stanforth, Lisa Griffin

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Power lifting can improve total body bone mineral density (BMD), but improvements in the regions most susceptible to injury (femoral neck and lumbar vertebrae) have not been demonstrated. Soccer players, who engage in odd-impact loading, have greater BMD at the femoral neck than sedentary controls. Olympic lifting involves both high- and odd-impact loading at the femoral neck and lumbar regions, but comparisons in BMD across sport-specific athletes have not yet been made. PURPOSE: To examine differences in total BMD and BMD at the femoral neck and lumbar vertebrae between female power lifters (PL), Olympic lifters (OL), soccer players (SP) and …
