The evaluation of the fallopian tubes is an essential part of the infertility workup, with abnormalities related to the fallopian tubes accounting for up to 40% of female subfertility.1 Laparoscopy is still considered the gold standard in the diagnostic evaluation of fallopian tubes, though the hysterosalpingogram (HSG) has long been recognized as complementary to laparoscopy, since tubal anatomy can be distinctly be seen.2 That said, previous investigations using laparoscopy as the gold standard demonstrate HSG has a sensitivity and specificity of 53% and 87%, respectively, for any tubal pathology and 46% and 95%, respectively, for bilateral tubal pathology.3

Nondestructive imaging is a method of examining a material without direct contact that additionally does not alter the properties of the material. The terahertz imaging system currently in development uses the principle of interferometry (a Michelson Interferometer) such that frequency modulated terahertz signals are split and directed to the object under study and a reference mirror; then the detector will acquire the intensity of the combined reflected signals that contains information about the objects in the path of the beam.

Military couples face significant challenges to their relationships including demanding schedules, multiple deployments, and frequent moves. Despite the high costs of chronic marital distress, very few military (or civilian) couples seek marriage therapy. The military services and the VA system have implemented collaborative care models in primary care where internal behavioral health consultants are integrated into primary care. Integrated primary care can reduce the stigma of behavioral health services and may increase the odds that couples would seek help earlier. Cities are increasingly outfitted with sensors for monitoring various conditions such as traffic, weather, air quality, and infrastructure related issues. Such well outfitted cities are generating massive amounts of multi-modal data leading to daunting challenges in assimilating, visualizing, and making sense of this data by city authorities and citizens. We propose City360 to address these challenges and provide decision support to city authorities and citizens. We demonstrate the utility of our system through concrete use cases for San Francisco Bay area that utilize heterogeneous data from various open city data sources.

Nearly one half of those women are using contraception incorrectly, and the rest are not using it at all. A major barrier to the use of highly effective methods of contraception is cost. Importance: Diabetes is a growing public health threat. One in eleven individuals have diabetes and one in three individuals have prediabetes. Without intervention, 15-30% of individuals with prediabetes will develop diabetes within five years. The National Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) led by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is proven to prevent or delay the development of diabetes in individuals with prediabetes.

Objective: A continuing medical education (CME) activity was created to increase physician awareness of and referral to the DPP. The goal was to promote the DPP among first-line treatments for prediabetes.

Studies of the ecological and evolutionary relationships between plants and their associated microbes have long been focused on single microbes, or single microbial guilds, but in reality, plants associate with a diverse array of microbes from a varied set of guilds. As such, multitrophic interactions among plant-associated microbes from multiple guilds represent an area of developing research, and can reveal how complex microbial communities are structured around plants. Interactions between coniferous plants and their associated microbes provide a good model system for such studies, as conifers host a suite of microorganisms including mutualistic ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi and foliar bacterial endophytes. …

The Tennessee River Basin is considered one of the most important regions for freshwater biodiversity anywhere on the globe. The Tennessee River Basin currently includes populations of at least half of the described contemporary diversity of extant North American freshwater fishes, crayfish, mussel, and gastropod species. However, comparatively little is known about the biodiversity of this basin from the Pleistocene Epoch, particularly the late Pleistocene (∼10,000 to 30,000 years B.P.) leading to modern Holocene fish diversity patterns. Calcium and magnesium ions have been implicated in T lymphocyte proliferation in response to antigen recognition. Specifically, it is believed that calcium and magnesium elevations in the cytoplasm are necessary for efficient T cell proliferation. Research over the past two decades has focused on identifying the plasma membrane ion channels responsible for governing Ca2+ influx in lymphocytes and Orai-STIM, Kv1.3 and KCa3.1 channels were shown to be crucial for persistent calcium mobilization. Pharmacologic or genetic suppression of calcium influx gives rise to lymphoproliferative defects. In addition to Ca2+, several studies have demonstrated that Mg2+ influx positively regulates proliferation. TRPM7 is …

Homeostatic regulation is essential for the maintenance of synaptic strength within the physiological range. The current study is the first to demonstrate that both induction and reversal of homeostatic upregulation of synaptic vesicle release can occur within seconds of blocking or unblocking acetylcholine receptors at the mouse neuromuscular junction. Our data suggest that the homeostatic upregulation of release is due to Ca²⁺-dependent increase in the size of the readily releasable pool (RRP). Blocking vesicle refilling prevented upregulation of quantal content (QC), while leaving baseline release relatively unaffected. This suggested that the upregulation of QC was due to mobilization …

Background: Around 35% of adults with osteoarthritis (OA) have knee osteoarthritis (KOA), which generally progresses over several years; however, some individuals experience accelerated KOA (AKOA), a rapid progression to end-stage disease within 48-months. Purpose: To assess baseline differences among those who develop the different types of KOA, and to determine if baseline characteristics and measures can be used to predict an individual’s KOA status (Common KOA or AKOA) 48 months later.

Methods: Cross-sectional analysis of data from the Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI) was completed. At baseline, 4,769 participants were enrolled. Data from individuals (n = 1,561) free of radiographic KOA (Kellgren-Lawrence …
