The purpose of the study was to investigate the risk factors for Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) among African immigrants and African Americans born in the United States to identify differences and similarities in their impact and prevalence. Variables considered as potential differentiators included alcohol consumption, income, educational levels, and smoking habits, age, and gender. In 2010, nearly 1 in 5 visits to the emergency department (ED) were categorized as potentially avoidable, resulting in a significant $65 billion increase in health care expenditures and exacerbating ED overcrowding. This project addressed whether a staff education initiative focused on evidence-based patient teaching strategies can enhance nurses’ patient education skills regarding when patients should seek medical attention. Inefficient communication between nurses and patients increases the risk of medication errors and jeopardizes patient safety, ultimately resulting in lower patient satisfaction as indicated by Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) scores. The purpose of this quality improvement initiative was to assess the impact of educating nurses on patient medication education using the teach-back method. This study involved determining why mothers hesitate to vaccinate their children and where they get their information about vaccinations. This descriptive qualitative study guided by the health belief model explored the influence social media has on mothers’ perceived barriers to vaccinating their children.
