Previous studies have indicated that the murine surface antigen Lyb2 is involved in an activation pathway that apparently does not involve the surface immunoglobulin receptor. As sIg has been shown to transduce its activation signal through the breakdown of phosphatidylinositol (PI), and since activation via Lyb2 does not involve sIg, it was of interest to determine if binding to Lyb2 generates a PI response. We have demonstrated that an allele-specific monoclonal antibody to Lyb2 (anti-Lyb2 mab), which has previously been shown to drive B cells into S, also activated PI metabolism in these cells. The composition appears to function as a biological inhibitor and has antibacterial and antifungal activity when applied to the normal flora and secretions of the epidermis and mucous membranes. Also, the composition has antipruritic and anti-inflammatory activity. Phenylbutazone is an acidic, lipophilic, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It is extensively metabolized in the horse. The metabolites so far identified, oxyphenbutazone, y-hydroxyphenylbutazone and y-hydroxyoxyphenbutazone. account for some 25-30% of administered dose over 24 h. The plasma half-life of phenylbutazone and termination of its pharmacological action are determined primarily by its rate of hepatic metabolism. Phenylbutazone acts by inhibiting the cyclooxygenase enzyme system, which is responsible for synthesis of prostanoids such as PGE?. It appears to act on prostaglalidin-H synthase and prostacyclin synthase, after conversion by prostaglandin-H synthase to reactive intermediates. The invention relates to a method for hydrolyzing drug glucuronic acid conjugates present in mammalian body fluids, the conjugates being derived from a narcotic analgesic, antagonist, or agonist-antagonist whose metabolism includes conjugation with glucuronic acid. The method comprises incubating the body fluid sample at from about 60 to about 70° C., for at least about 1 hour, with 3-glucuronidase derived from Patella vulgata, and substantially increases the sensitivity of chromatographic techniques for the detection of morphine and its analogues.

Small resting B lymphocytes are activated when their cell surface immuno-globulin (Ig) receptors interact with specific antigen or anti-Ig antibodies. Such a receptor-ligand interaction leads to enlargement and proliferation of B lymphocytes. These activated B cells can subsequently mature into Ig-secreting cells in the presence of appropriate accessory cell signals (1-3). However, monovalent anti-Ig antibodies cannot induce B cell activation even though they can bind to the surface Ig (4-7). Effects of soil type, flow rate, antecedent soil moisture and other factors on transport of E. coli through soils was measured on disturbed and intact columns 20 cm in diameter by 25 to 30 cm in depth. Added E. coli were distinguished from indigenous microbes using an antibiotic resistance marker. Transport of Cl^- and ³H₂O was also measured. Up to 96 percent of the bacteria irrigated onto the surface of intact columns were recovered in the effluent. Soil structure appeared to be related to the extent of transport. Morphine could be detected in horses dosed with 0.1 mg of drug/kg of body weight for up to 48 hours in blood and 144 hours in urine. This dose of morphine elicited no observ­able effects and is a suggested an­algesic dose. Computer analysis revealed that a 3-compartment open system was the best fitting model with a serum half life of 87.9 minutes and a urine half life of 101.1 minutes. Binding to equine serum proteins was linear over a drug con­centration range of 3.88 x 10-5M to 3.50 x 10-aM and averaged 31.6%. In RBC-partitioning experiments, 78.1 % of the …

To determine if excessive systemic exposure to aluminum would be reflected in increased aluminum concentration in hair, rabbits were given a series of aluminum lactate injections. Hair was collected before the aluminum lactate administration from the site of injections and twice after the injections from this site as well as from an area adjoining the injection site. Aluminum was determined by flameless atomic absorption analysis of acid-digested samples. The concentration of aluminum in the hair increased after the injections in samples taken at both times from both sites. Aquatic toxicity tests were conducted on 11 organic compounds considered hazardous to water resources. The toxicity of each compound was evaluated using embryo-larval stages of two to eight fish and amphibian species. Exposure was initiated at fertilization and maintained through 4 days posthatching. The animal test species exhibited varying degrees of sensitivity to the selected toxicants. Combined frequencies for mortality and teratogenesis at 4 days posthatching gave LC₅₀ ranges of 3.66 to 8.25 mg/L for benzene, 1.16 to 22.42 mg/L for carbon tetrachloride, 0.11 to 1.20 mg/L for chlorobenzene, 2.03 to > 68 mg/L for chloroform, 3.01 to 5.56 mg/L …
