An investigation was made on the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and egg diameter of the specimens of the Common Carp ( Cyprinus carpio) caugth from Çildir Lake in the period of 1991-93. The most intensive period for the reproduction was recorded in June-August, when water temperatures were 12.9, 19.6°C respectively.

This experiment was conducted to determine the effects of hatching egg weight and parental age on the hatching chick weight and sixth week of age live weight of Japanese Quail ( Coturnix coturnix japonica). The first experiment was carried out with a total of 450 quail chicks hatched from three different egg weights groups (A, 11.0-11.9 g; B, 12.0-12.9 g; C, 13.0-13.9 g). The seperation of transferrin types were carried out using teh horizontal starch-jel electrophoresis. the frequencies of transferrin alleles were determined 0.0801+-0.019,0.195+-0.018 and 0.004+-0.003 for TfA, TfB and TfC, respectively. Differences between expected number and observed number for transferrin genotypes were nonsignificant.

This study has been carried out quantitative and qualitative studies of the gastrointestinal microflora of 34 pike-perch in Eğirdir Lake 134. strains of bacteria were isolated and identified. Main bacterial groups were Staphylococcus, Moraxella, Micrococcus in addition Aeromonas, Flavobacterium, Propionibacterium, Coryneform group, Acinetobacter, Enterobacteriaceae were also detected. Qualitative examination of the bacteria present in gastrointestinal flora indicated that, the bacterial population of pike-perch will be changed to by water temperature. Total aerobic bacteria number ranged from 5.5x10 3 -5.0x10 4 cfu/g, 1.0X10 4 -10x10 6 cfu/g in the stomach and intestine respectively. As a result, in pike perch, Staphylococcus and …

Salmonella arizonae infection was detected in guinea pigs kept for breeding. Two months old 50 quinea pigs were died in the breedig unit. Three death and 2 live guinea pigs were brought to Veterinary Faculty of İstanbul. The live 2 were euthanasied and necropcy was performed on all guinea pigs. The fluid about 50 cc. in the abdomen, the necrosis and pseudomembranes in the liver and spleen were observed. On histopathology, the foci of various coagulative necrosis were seen in the liver. In this study, a total of 100 ice cream samples, collected from various patisserie in Ankara, 30 of them vanilla, 26 of them chocolate and 44 of them fruit ice cream samples, were analysed microbiologically. While coliform and E. coli counts were determined with MPN technique, in the isolation of the salmonella enrichment technique and in the isolation of the total viable count, lactobacilli, micrococci and staphylococci, coagulase positive staphylococci, enterobacteriaceae, enterococci, pseudomonas, yeast and molds, drop plating technique were used. Prostaglandin F2a was commonly used for synchronisation in mares. The purpose of this study was to see the effect of single and double doses of PGF2a on estrous, ovulation and pregnancy rates. Therefore 43 Thoroughbred mares, between 4-17 years old, were used. In this study, pathological findings were observed in experimental salmonellosis in mice. S. enteritidis PT 1, 4 and 7 strains isolated from chikens were used. Suspensions containing 10 9 and 10 8 of bacteria were inoculated orally to 36 mice. Anorexia, dullness, mild diarrhea, shudder, fever and death were observed in 9 mice. No clinical signs were seen in other mice. In macroscobic examinations, enlargement of liver and spleen, hyperemia and watery content were observed in intestines. In this research, the effect of liquid smoke on the chemical, microbiological, physical and sensorial properties of Frankfurters were investigated. For this purpose, prepared sausage batters according to the standard formula were stuffed into the casings and divided into three groups before cooking and smoking. Sausages were smoked by using three different methods: natural smoking, dipping into 0.25% liquid smoke for 6 minutes and pulverization of 0.25% liquid smoke for 6 minutes. In this study, two porcupines (Hystrix cristata) were used to investigate the bones of fore limb. It was observed that the area of fossa supraspinata (54.7%) was larger than that of fossa infraspinata (45.3%). This study is realized in the aim of investigate the starter culture use effect on the ripening of Turkish fermented sau-sage. The starter culture combination obtained from Turkish fermented sausage microflora included Staphylococcus carnosus and Lactobacillus plantarum strains. Organoleptic, physico-chemical and microbiological analyses were carried out on the Ist, 3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th and 15th days of ripening period. Results showed that best quality specifications for Turkish fermented sausage are obtained on 6th and 9th days of ripening period.

This study was performed on 100 sheep, of which 50 were Morkaraman and 50 were Tuj, grown up in the pasture conditions in and around Kars. The serum zinc and copper values of the animals were analysed with Atomic Absorbtion Spectrophotometre. The serum zinc and copper values were respectively determined as; 40.56 ± 5.6 µg/dl, 80.10 ± 7.49 µg/dl in Morkaramans and, 38.72 ± 5.32 µg/dl, 75.04 ± 6.58 µg/dl in Tujs. There were no significant differences between the value of zinc and copper statistically.

In this study, the accumulation levels in serum, muscle and bone and the effect on lipid fractions in liver of dietary aluminum in broilers were examined. Day-old 30 broiler chicks were separated into two equal groups. Experimental group was fed with diet added 2 g/kg aluminum sulfate. Feed and water were given ad libitum. In this study the data on the coccidia of gallinaceous birds in Azerbaijan were presented. Chickens and pheasants have already been examined earlier concerning the presence of Eimeria and Isospora. Peacocks and quails are studied in this aspect for the first time. The examination of the gallinaceous birds concerning the presence of crytosporidia oocysts has been also carried out for the first time. The results obtained are indicative of the presence of a few coccidian species in the gallinaceous birds which have not been detected in Azerbaijan before.

In this study, presence of antibodies to Ehrlichia risticii in the sera of 100 throughbreed horses brought to Turkey Jockey Club Stud from different regions was investigated by indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA), western immunoblotting, indirect enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and competetive ELISA (CELISA) using monoclonal antibody. Ten sera gave various degrees of flourescence on IFA test. The sera giving fluorescence were sent to University of Maryland and the test was repeated. The results were similar. The main ultrastructural properties of the gill epithelium of the zebrafish, Brachydanio rerio are investigated. The pavement cells are distinguished with their microvilli, infolding protrusions and construction of an intercellular channel system, while the chloride cells sited in filamental and especially respiratory lamellar epithelia are characterized by a high number of well developed, large mitochondria and an expansive, membranous tubular system. The close relationship observed between these cell types indicates that, at least ultrastructurally, chloride cells are communicated with the external milieu via the channel system of the pavement cells.

The effects of the supplementation of yeast, molasses and barley to barley straw diets on the dry matter intake, digestibility and ruminal fermentation in sheep were investigated. Ten male merino sheep were used in a changeover design trial of five 30-day periods. Baker's yeast (50 g/kg straw), molasses (100g/kg straw) and barley grain (100 g/kg straw) were given either separately or in combination as supplements to barley straw. Supplementation increased the total dry matter intake by 18.2-36.8 %. Supplements given alone or in combination had no effect on dry matter and organic matter digestibility of the diet. Low-fat Edam cheese was manufactured using conventional cheese-making procedures using low-fat milk (1.5% fat). The cheese samples were aged for six months at 5 to 6°C. The cheese was analyzed for biochemical characteristics and peptide content. The peptide contents were determined with reverse phase chromatography. The association property of proteins and peptides in the soluble fraction of the cheese was determined using hydrophobic interaction chromatography. The overall peptide quantity increased with age with a marked increase in hydrophobic peptide content.

Faecal samples of 172 diarrhoeic and 130 non-diarrhoeic cattle were examined for the presence of Cryptosporidium oocysts. The prevalence of infection in diarrhoeic and non-diarrhoeic cattle was 63.3% and 69.2%, respectively. The infection was prevalent in cattle over three years old, in both diarrhoeic and non-diarrhoeic animals. In both groups, oocyst sheeding level of (+) was the most common. A case of spontaneosly ruptured splenic hemangiosarcoma with abdominal dissemination in a 12-year-old male German shepherd dog is described. At necropsy, a ruptured tumor mass was seen in the ventral region of the visceral surface of the spleen, and disseminated tumor masses were seen throughout the peritoneal cavity. Histologically, in both the primary tumor mass and dis-seminated tumor masses, atypical endothelial cells lining vascular spaces as small clefts or as cavernous channels were observed. Twenty naturally infected horses were divided into two groups (10 control and 10 experimental) according to EPG values. An injectable formulation of moxidectin, in a dose of 0.3 mg/kg, was given to the horses orally in jam syrup. The evaluation of drug efficacy was based on EPG values. The same dose of the drug was applied to an additional 25 horses to test for side effects. The drug was found to be highly effective (100%) against strongylin parasites on days 7, 14. and 21. No side effects were observed.

The present study was conductud on qualis ( Coturnix coturnix japonica) to evaluate the effects of line and age of bird on egg characteristics. Total ninety Japanese quail from unselected (C) and selected (S) for high 4-week body weight for five generations were used. In this study reproductive performance of female rainbow trout broodstock ( Oncorhynchus mykiss) in a commercial trout farm in Eastern Black Sea Region were evaluated during 1995 spawning season. Mean total and relative fencundity values were 2304±425 egg/individual and 1364±281 egg/kg, respectively, while mean egg dia meter was 5.2±0.21 mm. Fertilisation rate on average was 73.7% of total fencundity. 84.6% of the fertilised eggs was eyed and 96.0% of those eyed was hatched. Larvae reached free swimming stage after 23 days and survival rate was 98.9% of those hatched larvae. Larvae reached a mean weight of 305±56 mg at 40th …
