Canine Mast Cell Tumors: A Pathological Survey Of Nineteen Cases, Sevi̇l Atalay Vural, Yilmaz Aydin

In the survey study, a total of 19 canine mast cell tumors were examined with regard to sex, age, breed of dogs, tumor location, and pathological findings in the period of 1960-1999. The majority of tumors occurred in males (78%) and between the ages of 6 and 11 years (67%). The pointer was predisposed to development of tumors (35%). The hindquarters and hind legs were most commonly involved, followed by the extragenital inguinal area and trunk. The tumors clearly had a site preference for the posterior region of the body (79%). This study was carried out to determine the effect of the supplementation of enzyme and probiotic to broiler feeds based on barley and wheat on broiler performance, dressing percentage, the small intestinal length and weight, liver and abdominal fat weights, intestinal viscosity and the percentage of sticky droppings. The study was carried out to investigate the effects of sunflower meal with an enzyme mixture containing \alpha-amylase, ß-glucanase, cellulase, lipase and protease substituted for soybean meal in broiler diets on performance, intestinal weight, viscosity and pH, as well as the frequency of sticky droppings and abdominal fat. Survey Of European Foulbrood Disease In Bee Farms Located In Elazığ And The Surrounding Provinces, Hali̇l Şi̇mşek, Canan Özcan
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
A total of 250 specimens from 110 bee farms located in Elazığ and the surrounding provinces were taken in 1999 and 2000. The specimens were examined for European Foulbrood Disease. Under macroscopic examination clinical symptoms were noted in 12 specimens, and Paenibacillus alvei was isolated and identified from 8 of these specimens. As a result of the antibiotic sensitivity test, the isolate was found sensitive to enrofloxacin, streptomycin and erythromycin 75%, 75%, and 62,5% of the time respectively. In this study, the presence of European Foulbrood Disease was determined in 3.2% of cases in Elazığ and the surrounding provinces.

The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of copper sulphate administration on body weight gain and some biochemical, haematological parameters in lambs which had serum copper levels at subclinical values. This study was performed on 30 Ivesi male lambs (control group: 12, experimental group: 18), aged with 15-20 days. In the experimental group, 100 mg copper sulphate (1% solution) was administered orally four times (with periods of two weeks). The aim of this study was to determine \beta-carotene, retinol (Vit A), selenium (Se) and \alpha-tocopherol (Vit E) levels in the sera of blood and milk from cattle with foot and mouth disease (FMD). A total of 120 blood sera and 22 milk sera were used for the analysis. \beta-carotene and Vit A, Se and Vit E levels were determined by spectrophotometer, fluorophotometer and HPLC respectively. In this study, lipid peroxidation, intracellular, membrane and extracellular antioxidant activities in Turkish Angora goats (Genotype I) and American x Turkish crossbred Angora goats (Genotype II) were investigated, in order to show the effects of genotype on the antioxidative metabolism. A total of 473 sera from hens of different age groups and different breeds and a total of 430 eggs were collected from 11 breeders and egg producers in the districts of Adapazarı, Afyon, Ankara and Konya. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), heat-extract (HE) and flagella antigens were tested in the standardizing ELISA technique. Flagella antigen was found useful in the screening of field samples. Of the 48 (10.2%) rapid plate agglutination positive sera, 7 were negative in ELISA. One hundred and seventy-three (36.6%) of the 473 sera and 76 (17.7%) of the 430 egg yolks were found to be positive with ELISA. …

Exposure of buffalo liver and kidney tissue arginases to a 150 w light source from a distance of 8-10 cm, in the presence of 0.05mM methylene blue, caused significant inhibition of arginase activity. It was determined that this inhibition occurred differently in liver and kidney tissues. Arginase activity was spectrophotometrically measured using the Thiosemicarbazide diacetyl-monoxime urea (TDMU) method. Two studies were conducted to evaluate if Fertirelin acetate (an analogue of GnRH) and Gentamycin sulphate would improve pregnancy rate in healthy cows or in nonpregnant cows although they were inseminated three times or more. This investigation was carried out to demonstrate some production traits and egg quality characteristics of Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica). One hundred female quails were used in the study. The experiment was carried out for six months. Egg production, egg weight, feed consumption and some egg quality characteristics were taken into consideration. Egg quality characteristics were measured at 8-24 weeks of age. Average egg production (% HD) at 8, 12, 16, 20 and 24 weeks of age was 20.5, 33.8, 63.7, 73.8 and 72.5 respectively. In this study, how to obtain high quality sugar beet pulp silage was investigated. Sugar beet pulp was mixed with wheat straw or grass hay in order to increase the level of dry matter to 20, 25 and 30%, and 5% molasses and different levels of urea were added (0, 1, 1.5 and 2% for wheat straw containing groups; 0, 0.5 and 1% for grass hay containing groups). In the present study involving patients with bone metastases arising from prostate cancer, we measured urinary deoxypyridinoline (DPD) as a marker of collagen breakdown activity, serum total and bone-specific alkaline phosphatase activities and serum prostate specific antigen (PSA). This study included 20 patients with benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) and 23 patients with carcinoma, 11 of had with bone metastases. DPD excretion in urine was significantly greater in prostate cancer patients with bone metastasis than in those with localised prostate cancer or BPH (p0.05). Forty-eight upper limbs were dissected in order to study the courses and relations of the brachial plexus nerves in the axilla. Connections between the musculocutaneous and median nerves were found in five arms. There was a suprascapular nerve arising from the union of C4 and C5 directly in one cadaver. A branch from the median nerve extending to the brachial artery was determined. In one of the cadavers the radial nerve arose only from the union of posterior divisions of the inferior and middle trunks.

B(a)P is a mutagenic, carcinogenic and teratogenic substance. Paclitaxel and doxorubicin are antineoplastic drugs widely used in cancer treatment. The purpose of this study is to observe the effects of doxorubicin and paclitaxel on p170 glycoprotein in rat liver and kidney tissue after administration of B(a)P. As is well known, p170 glycoprotein is an indicator of drug resistance. We hypothesized that a combination of these antineoplastic drugs would cause lower p170 levels and thus would have a stronger effect than single drug administration. In the study 64 male Sprague dawley rats were used. They were divided into 8 groups, and protective agents were applied at different doses for 8 weeks. The aim of the study was to establish apolipoprotein E genotype in the patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) who are inhabitants of the north-east of Turkey. The study involved 106 patients (70 male, 36 female; ages ranging from 37 to 69 years) who are local people and were angiocardiographically diagnosed for CHD. This study was designed to determine the prevalence of osteopathy in diabetic patients, who are at risk of developing osteopathy, and clarify the relationship between osteopathy and other complications of diabetes mellitus. Thirty-four type I and 66 type II diabetic patients admitted to the endocrinology clinic between 1996 and 1997 and 30 nondiabetic subjects as a control group were studied. Anionic sites on bacterial envelopes of Streptococcus \beta-haemolyticus and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 P were investigated on materials fixed with Karnovsky fixative containing the cationic dyes ruthenium red (RR) or alcian blue (AB). Electron dense granules and short fibrils were found to be irregularly distributed around the cells on the glycocalyces of both genera. An electron dense stained reaction with RR or AB on the cell membrane and glycocalyx indicates the presence of rich anionic sites on these structures. Electron microscopic observations demonstrate that anionic sites in the glycocalyx are responsible for the adherence phenomenon during the formation of microcolonies. …

Carnitine is a major molecule which plays a great role in the transfer of long chain fatty acids into the mitochondrion. Measurement of its total and free forms is essential in the clinical evaluation of carnitine deficiency that can arise from disorders either primarily or secondarily. The effect of cigarette smoking on the fractal organisation of the heartbeat regulating system was investigated by power spectral analysis. The heart rate variability (HRV) signal was obtained from the consecutive RR intervals of ECG. Power law behaviour of 1/f\beta type was studied to assess the fractal organisation of the heartbeat. Changes in the ratio of low frequency (PLF) to high frequency power (PHF) were used to assess the state of sympathovagal balance. The aim of the present study was to determine where injuries due to violence mostly occur and to find differences (if present) among where the assaults places in 334 patients who sustained injuries due to reasons other than accidents, randomly selected from the medical records and files of those referred to the Department of Traumatology of the Council of Forensic Medicine between 1 January and 31 December 1998 in İstanbul. The microbiologic lid flora evaluations of 117 patients with anterior blepharitis were compared with those of 52 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. The sampled bacterial cultures were identified according to standard conventional techniques and fatty acid profiles by the Microbial Identification System (MIS). Chi-square and difference between two percentage Z tests were used for the statistical analyses. The most commonly isolated organisms were Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus, Propionibacterium acnes and mixed skin flora (diphtheroid rods, Neisseria spp. and Streptococcus viridans).
