Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are in common use worldwide. These drugs may sometimes be used in high or toxic doses by mistake. The Effect Of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss Walbaum, 1792) Cage Culture On Benthic Macrofauna In Kesikköprü Dam Lake*, İlknur Karaca, Serap Pulatsü

The aim of this research was to determine the effect of a cage farm with a capacity of about 55 t on the benthic macrofauna in Kesikköprü Dam Lake. At 3 stations (the cage and 15 m and 60 m from the cage) selected for this purpose the abundance and composition of benthic macrofauna were determined for 11 months. The abundance of benthic macrofauna (individuals/m^2) between the stations was statistically significant (P < 0.05). The abundance of benthic macrofauna was higher at the cage station than at the other 2 stations, except in April and November. During the research period the lowest number of individuals (937 individuals/m^2) was found at the second station 15 m from the cage in February; and the highest number (14,091 individuals/m^2) was determined at the cage station in December. Members of the class Pelecypoda were found at all 3 stations. Dreissena, which is a member of the class Pelecypoda, was the most dominant benthic organism (54%), followed by Chrinomus (30%) and Tubifex (11%). At the cage station, while members of the class Pelecypoda were found, no members of the classes Insecta, Oligocheta or Crustacea were found. The highest number of benthic macrofauna genera (7) was found at the station 60 m from the cage in April and November. The lowest number of genera (1) was found at the cage station in July. The results of this study in Kesikköprü Dam Lake reveal that the cage culture has a localizing effect on the abundance and composition of benthic macrofauna.

Glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) was purified from goose erythrocytes and some characteristics of the enzyme were investigated. The purification procedure was composed of 3 steps: hemolysate preparation, ammonium sulfate precipitation, and 2', 5'-ADP Sepharose 4B affinity gel chromatography. Thanks to the 3 consecutive procedures, the enzyme, having a specific activity of 36.2 EU/mg protein, was purified for a yield of 68.79% and 3892 folds; to ascertain enzyme purity, SDS-PAGE was performed. This study investigates the relationship between total length (TL) and fork length (FL), girth (G), height (H) and width (W) of red mullet (Mullus barbatus) (n = 953) and annular sea bream (Diplodus annularis) (n = 944) collected during trawl selectivity trials carried out in İzmir Bay between July 1996 and February 1997. The FL, G, H and W of red mullet were 89, 53, 20 and 11% of the TL, respectively. For annular sea bream these values were 91, 80, 34 and 11%, respectively. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the use of the profit function regression model as a decision support tool in commercial broiler production. The fact that the estimated impact factors affecting profitability on the profit per kg live-weight were similar to those observed in the field indicates the power of the model as a decision support tool in broiler production. Because the marginal impact of each independent variable on profit was the estimated coefficient value, they could simply be used to evaluate "what-if scenarios" and the risk of investment under changing circumstances in broiler production. Aortic body tumors were investigated macroscopically and microscopically in a 2-year-old, clinically normal, male cross-breed dog. Two tumor masses measuring 4 x 4 x 3 cm in size were determined. One of them was located on the A. subclavia dextra and the other one was located on the A. carotis communis dextra and they adhered to the adventitia of these vessels. Aflatoxins that are toxic metabolites for human and animals were determined in some fish feed. Eighty-five unit samples taken from "fish farming processes", "feed factories" and "imported feeds" in 1998, 1999 and 2000 were analyzed. In the analysis, thin layer chromatography (TLC) and enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technique were used. Consequently, aflatoxin levels above 20 ppb were detected in 20 samples and from 21.2 to 42.4 ppb in 85 samples. In 22 samples aflatoxin levels from 5.0 to 20.0 ppb were detected. The aim of this study was to determine the effect on non-specific defence mechanisms in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fed diets containing different doses of \beta-glucan (MacroGard), Schizosaccharomyces pombe and S. pombe P450. The objective of this study was to determine sorghum varieties that are suitable for north Anatolian conditions and possess high nutrient yields. Eight grain sorghum varieties, namely, Öğretmenoğlu, Akdarı, Aldarı, Beydarı, Ramada, A-298, DK-64 and KS-397, were utilized as plant material in the experiment. When the grains were mature, they were harvested first, and then residues were harvested by hand. Samples were analyzed for dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), and in vitro DM digestibility. The egg production and incubation traits of native Turkish geese bred in the Kars region were examined in two separate trials. In the first trial, 100 female (70 one-year-old and 30 two-year-old) and 40 (two-year-old) male geese were used. The geese were divided into 20 groups. In each group there were five females and two males. Group feeding was used during the experiment. One-and 2-year-old geese laid 8.10 and 12.25 eggs/year, respectively. The aim of the present study was to determine the accumulation of cadmium in different tissues of Tilapia nilotica and to establish the influence of this accumulation on total protein levels in liver and kidney tissues. At the end of each experimental period; gill, liver and kidney tissues from the animals were dissected and their cadmium accumulation was determined using atomic absorbtion spectrophotometry. This present study was performed to identify reproductive peculiarities of the silverbelly (Leiognathus klunzingeri) in Yumurtalık Bight. For this purpose, 430 individuals were obtained by monthly sampling between October 1997 and September 1998 and then they were examined. By using the monthly changes in the mean values of the Gonadosomatic Index (GSI) and Fulton's Condition Factor (K), we found that reproduction period occurred between July and September, length at first maturity was 5.8 cm and 5.5 cm for males and females, respectively, egg diameter was between 0.8 and 1.0 mm and mean annual fecundity was 2789 ± 2109.

This study examined the effect of adaptation to acid on the survival of Salmonella typhimurium in mayonnaise, turnip juice and ayran (a drink made of yogurt and water). S. typhimurium was adapted to acid by exposure to hydrochloric acid at pH 5.8. The Effect Of Different Rations On Some Rumen Fluid And Blood Parameters In Sheep, Taylan Aksu, Suphi̇ Deni̇z

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different combinations of energy (barley and dried molassed sugar beet pulp (DMSBP)) and protein sources (soybean meal (SBM), cotton-seed meal (CSM), SBM-treated with formaldehyde (FTSBM), CSM-treated with formaldehyde (FTCSM), and urea) on some rumen fluid and blood parameters. In this study, four rumen fistulated Morkaraman rams were used. Rumen pH values were around the optimal pH values suggested for rumen fluid (5.2-7.3) at all sampling times. Ruminal NH_3-N concentrations were significantly greater (P < 0.05) in animals fed DMSBP as an energy source compared with animals fed barley as an energy source and were between 10.4 and 32.75 mg/100 ml in all groups. Formaldehyde treatments of protein sources reduced ruminal NH_3-N concentrations in animals fed DSBP as an energy source (P < 0.05). Acetic and propionic acid concentrations were affected by the energy source, although butyric acid concentrations were significantly higher in animals fed groups containing barley than in animals fed groups containing DMSBP. Formaldehyde treatment did not affect propionic acid concentrations, although propionic acid concentrations were generally significantly higher (P < 0.05) in animals fed barley + SBM combinations compared to treatments containing both SBM and CSM combinations (P < 0.05). Serum total protein concentrations were affected by the energy source and these were higher in groups containing DMSBP than in groups containing barley (P < 0.05). However, serum urea-N concentrations were similar among the different diets.

The aim of the study was to investigate the bacteriological effects of different diets by Streptococcus mutans counts on 50 Swiss albino rats inoculated with Streptococcus mutans CCUG 6519 serotype c. A powdered form of standard basal diet meeting rats' nutritional needs was used in combination with diets containing different percentages of starch, sucrose and xylitol for 90 days. Homocysteine was found to be an independent risk factor for coronary artery disease in many epidemiological studies. The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between total homocysteine levels and premature coronary artery disease events. A case - control study was carried out in patients aged 35 to 50 years with angiographically shown coronary heart disease and in age and sex matched control subjects with normal coronary angiography. To investigate the effect of low dietary zinc intake and experimental diabetes (IDDM) on the zinc and carbohydrate metabolism, 8-week-old male wealing normal albino (Wistar) rats were fed diets containing either adequate (54mg/kg) or low zinc (1mg/kg) quantities for one week. Ten rats from each group (n=20) were then intraperitoneally injected with alloxan to induce diabetes. The rats were sacrificed after a further three weeks. The aim of this study was to determine the histological changes of the thoracic aorta in rats fed on alcohol for a period of 24 weeks. Twenty male Wistar rats were divided into two groups. The ethanol group (n=10) was fed on a modified liquid diet (MLD) containing 7.2% ethanol for 24 weeks. The control group (n=10) was fed on MLD without ethanol throughout the experiment. We showed that butter suppresses metabolic responses to endotoxin in Wistar rats. Responses included increases in plasma caeruloplasmin and liver zinc and protein concentrations, and decreases in plasma zinc and albumin concentration. However, butter lost its suppressive effect at dietary concentrations above 90g/kg diet. The present study examined whether this phenomenon was due to the total dietary cholesterol intake rather than the intrinsic fatty acid composition of butter. This study was carried out to determine whether certain clinical, laboratory, or radiological parameters predispose patients to develop FIRDA in acute situations. Charts of patients in whom FIRDA was detected on an EEG on hospital admission were reviewed. Demographic data, clinical history, physical findings, laboratory results and neuroimaging studies were recorded. Sixty-eight patients with a median age of 56 years were included. Chronic illness was present in 78%. Normal background activity was observed in only 17% of the cases. Epileptiform discharges were uncommon. AIM: We aimed to find the correlation between bilirubin levels measured spectrophotometrically and transcutaneously by an icterometer and investigate if the number of serum bilirubin measurements can be reduced by using an icterometer during phototherapy on a bilibed. METHODS: The study group consisted of 52 babies with total serum bilirubin values less than 18 mg/dl, who were treated by phototherapy at the bilibed in the Neonatology Unit of Marmara University Hospital.
