The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of baker's yeast as a protein source instead of soybean meal in dairy cow diets. Four dairy cows were utilized in a 4 x 4 Latin Square experiment. Diets included 0.0% (Control Diet), 6.6% (Diet 1), 13.2% (Diet 2), and 19.8% (Diet 3) baker's yeast containing 3.56 x 10^8 CFU/g. The aim of the study was to determine the effects of different silage additives on the silage quality of sorghum silage. At the end of the spawning season, semen was collected without anesthesia by abdominal massage from 37 rainbow trout according to different age groups. In collected semens, color, volume, motility, activity time (duration of motility), concentration, total spermatozoa and pH were recorded. Furthermore, body weight and body length were measured and correlations beetween spermatological properties and these parameters were assessed. Determination Of Fatty Acid Compositions Of Five Different Tilapia Species From The Çukurova (Adana/Turkey) Region, Mehmet Çeli̇k, Mahmut Ali̇ Gökçe

The fatty acid compositions of Tilapia rendalli, T. zilli and Oreochromis aurea reared in cages located in Seyhan Dam Lake, O. niloticus reared in freshwater ponds and Tilapia spp. from the Seyhan River were compared. The fatty acid levels of Tilapia spp. from the Seyhan River were significantly higher than those of the other groups (p < 0.05). Total \omega-3 fatty acid values were significantly different for all groups and the highest level were found in Tilapia spp. (p < 0.05). The ratio of \omega-3/ \omega-6 for Tilapia spp., O. aurea, T. rendalli, T. zilli and O. niloticus were 1.95, 1.37, 1.29, 1.21 and 1.12, respectively.

In the present study, bone tumor samples obtained from 18 dogs and 21 cats from various clinics between 1986 and 2000 were clinically and pathologically examined at the Pathology Department, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Ankara. Most bone tumors examined were from 5-8-year-old dogs (43.75%) and cats (45%). A significant decrease was detected in animals over 8 years old. These tumors were observed in large breeds, mostly in German shepherd (38.4%) and Anatolian shepherd (Kangal) (15.4%) dogs. Tumors were seen in 10 male (66.7%) and 5 female (33.3%) dogs , and 11 male (61.1%) and 7 female (38.9%) cats. …

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of storage time in cumin paste on the microbiological, chemical and sensorial quality of pastırma, a pastrami-like meat product produced from, the Barbel fish, Barbus esocinus. The faeces of 464 horses and 110 donkeys were cOllected and examined by the flotation, sedimentation and Baermenn-Wetzel methods in a parasitology laboratory. The examinations showed that 327 of 464 (70.5%) horses and 85 of 110 (77.3%) donkeys were infected with the following species: in horses, Strongylidae sp. 62.7%, Strongyloides westeri 5.8%, Parascaris equorum 3.2%, Anoplocephalidae sp. 2.4 %, Fasciola hepatica 0.9%, Oxyuris equi 0.6%, and Paranoplocephala mamillana 0.2%; and in donkeys; Strongylidae sp. 72.7%, Strongyloides westeri 13.6%, Parascaris equorum 2.7%, Fasciola hepatica 0.9%, Oxyuris equi 0.9% and Dicrocoelium dendriticum 0.9%.

This study sought to determine the roles and effectiveness of findings obtained from radiographic examinations of lungs in the diagnosis of pulmonary diseases and to place radiographic findings into routine practice in dogs and cats. Fifty-eight dogs and 27 cats of different breeds, sexes and ages suspected of having pulmonary disease were used as the study materials after clinical examination and anamnesis. The pulmonary radiographies of these cases were appropriately taken and radiographic findings were evaluated. This study was carried out to determine the effect of transcervical and intravaginal artificial insemination on the pregnancy rate in dogs. Semen was collected by the massage method from dogs brought to our department. Collected semen was examined in the laboratory and stored in liquid nitrogen after dilution with Tris extender. In 2000-2001, the frequency of metritis cases due to Klebsiella pneumoniae was investigated in Thoroughbred breeding mares in the Marmara region of Turkey, where most racehorses are reared. In addition, Thoroughbred stallions from the breeding centre in the İzmit district were examined for the presence of K. pneumoniae. Biotypes and capsule types of the isolates were detected, and their antibiotic susceptibilities were determined. We investigated the shape and number of chromosomes of Konya wild sheep. A karyotype was prepared from G-band painted chromosomes. Konya wild sheep have 54 diploid chromosomes. The first three autosomal chromosomes were metacentric, and the other autosomal chromosomes and X chromosomes were acrocentric.

Growth performance, carcass measurements and carcass characteristics of three fat-tailed Turkish breeds (Awassi = A, Morkaraman = M and Tushin = T) weaned at 2.5 months of age and subjected to semi-intensive feeding during a grazing period on pasture for 70 days were evaluated. At the end of the 70-day grazing period, M lambs showed the highest performance for daily weight gain and the amount of concentrate consumed per bodyweight gain in addition to grazing on pasture. The effects of the breed and sex of lambs on daily weight gain on pasture were significant (P < 0.05) and highly significant (P < 0.01), respectively. Male lambs were superior to female lambs with respect to daily weight gain on pasture. The slaughter traits, carcass measurements and carcass characteristics of 14 male lambs representing three fat-tailed breeds were compared at the end of the grazing period of the year in which they were born. After slaughter, carcasses were chilled at +4 °C for 24 h and measurements were taken on the intact cold carcasses. The carcasses were then dissected into wholesale cuts. The hot carcass weight and hindshank weight of M lambs were heavier than those of A and T lambs. M had a higher hot dressing percentage and larger M. longissimus dorsi (LD) area than those of A and T lambs. Most of the weights of wholesale cuts such as foreshank and breast, sirloin, leg, rib and hindshank were significantly (P < 0.05; P < 0.01) affected by sheep breed. It is recommended either that A, M or T male and female lambs weaned at 2.5 months of age in eastern Turkey should be fed with 450 g concentrate per head per day on pasture for 3 to 3.5 months of grazing season, or lambs should be supplemented with more than 450 g concentrate feed on pasture because native fat-tailed Turkish breeds supplemented with 450 g concentrate on pasture did not give carcasses with an adequate commercial weight at the end of a 70-day fattening period.

Periodontal disease in cats was investigated with respect to clinical, radiological and microbiological evaluations. Each tooth group was evaluated according to plaque index, gingival index, sulcus bleeding index, calculus index, periodontal disease index, furcation exposure index, feline odontoclastic resorptive lesions (FORL) and tooth mobility. The prevalence of the disease was evaluated statistically. Upper and lower premolars were affected by periodontal disease at a higher rate than others. Tooth loss was often observed in incisives, premolars and canines concurrently. The intrinsic membrane properties of the neurons in the cortices of the inferior colliculus were studied in 300-µm transversal slices. The membrane properties, including the sub- and superthreshold, of the neurons were determined by intracellular stimulations with current injections. Of 49 intracellularly recorded neurons, 21 were successfully stained with intracellular biocytin injection. Morphologically all of the 21 neurons were identified as multipolar. Physiologically three firing patterns (onset, regular and adapting) were identified on the basis of response patterns to depolarizing current injections. Effect Of Low Birthweight On Serum Thyroid Hormones, Glucose, Urea And Blood Ph In Newborn Lambs, Tufan Keçeci̇

In this study, serum thyroid hormone, glucose and urea levels as well as blood pH values were compared between six control (birthweight ? 2.5 kg) and seven experimental Merino lambs (birthweight < 2.5 kg, hypotrophic) at 2, 4, 8 and 24 h postpartum. Serum levels of total thyroxin (T_4), free thyroxin (FT_4), total triiodothyronine (T_3; with exception of 24 h postpartum), free triiodothyronine (FT_3; with the exception of 4, 8 and 24 h postpartum) and glucose were lower in hypotrophic lambs compared to the controls. However, the serum urea levels of hypotrophic animals were higher than those of the controls. On the other hand, serum T_3, FT_3 and FT_4 levels determined at 4 and 8 h were higher than those at 2 and 24 h postpartum in both groups. A similar case was also observed in the serum T_4 levels of hypotrophic lambs. In addition, the serum glucose levels of hypotrophic lambs were higher and the blood pH values of both groups were lower at 2 h postpartum. In conclusion, It was observed that low birthweight affected neonatal thyroid function, serum glucose and urea levels in lambs.

This study was carried out to determine Eimeria infection in goats in nine different districts in Van province in Turkey. Faecal samples (approximately 3-5 g) were obtained from the rectums of 242 goats. The samples were examined by Sheather's sugar flotation technique and determined microscopically for the presence of oocysts. Eimeria species were identified following sporulation of faeces in a thin layer of 2.5% potassium dichromate for one or two weeks at 25 ºC. Behaviour And Biological Control Of Bacteriocin-Producing Leuconostocs Associated With Spoilage Of Vacuum-Packaged Sucuk, Özlem Osmanağaoğlu

Non-motile, Gram-positive and catalase-negative anaerobic Leuconostoc sp. were found to be involved in the spoilage of vacuum-packaged refrigerated sucuk samples. The spoilage was associated with an accumulation of large quantities of foul-smelling gas and purge in the bag and loss of colour and texture in the meat. Many of these isolates produce bacteriocins, to which the predominant Gram-positive bacteria normally found in these products are sensitive. As the leuconostocs grew at low temperatures and produced bacteriocins, they inhibited the growth of associated sensitive bacteria. The clinical, laboratory, ultrasonographic and pathological characteristics of a poorly differentiated pancreatic carcinoma in a 6-year-old cat are described in this study. Clinical abnormalities included severe dehydration, icterus, and partial alopecia on the medial surface of the limbs and ventral abdomen. A nodular mass was detected on abdominal palpation. Ultrasonography of the abdomen revealed a hypoechoic mass including hyperechoic and anechoic areas in the pancreatic region, and several hypoechoic areas and dilatation of the biliary duct and gallbladder in the liver. The arginase was partially purified from cattle rumen tissue and its properties were investigated and thereafter compared with those of other tissue arginases. The specific activity of the purified enzyme was found about 150 times greater than that of the crude rumen homogenate. The molecular weight of native arginase, estimated by gel filtration on a Sephadex G-150 column, was 122 500 ± 2500 and those of subunits of the enzyme, estimated by SDS-PAGE and gel filtration on a Sephadex G-100 column, were 44 000 ± 1000 and 34 500 ± 500.
