The population structure, mortality and growth of the tench [Tinca tinca (L., 1758)] in Çivril Lake was investigated, using 506 fish caught with various gill nets between February 1998 and January 1999. The percentages of females and males in the population were 38.34% and 61.66%, respectively, and the overall female-male sex ratio was 1:1.61. Specimens ranged from 11.4 to 28.8 cm in fork length, and from 27.7 to 420.4 g in weight. The age distribution was I-V in the population. Some growth properties of the brown trout Salmo trutta macrostigma (Dumeril, 1858) in Tekederesi, which is a branch feeding the Karasu River, were investigated. The age composition of the population varied between I and V. The population was 64.81% female and 35.19% male and the differences between the sexes were statistcally significant (P < 0.05). The mean fork length and mean body weight of the 54 individuals examined were 16.58 cm and 53.15 g, respectively. The differences between the sexes according to age groups for fork length and total weight were not statistically significant (P > 0.05). The specific and relative growth for length and weight were maximum at the second age. The length-weight relationship of the population was calculated by the least squares method and the logarithmic equation was found to be Log W = -1.4684 + 2.590 Log FL (fork length). …

A Study On The Meat Cost And Marketing Margins Of Cattle Fattening Farms In Erzurum Province, Yavuz Topcu

The major aim of this study was to analyze the meat cost per kg live weight and marketing margins of cattle fattening farms in Erzurum province in the 2001 production period. Data were collected from 130 cattle fattening farms and different associations. Cattle fattening farms were classified according to their size into 3 groups using stratified random sampling. According to the results obtained, the meat cost per kg live weight was 2.800.000 TL for group 1 farms, 2.840.000 TL for group 2 farms and 2.290.000 TL for group 3 farms. In this study, changes in the food component and meat yield in hot smoked tench (Tinca tinca L., 1758) were investigated. The meat yield of tench was calculated as 49.27 ± 0.76%. Before hot smoking the water content, and crude fat, crude protein, crude ash and carbohydrate levels were determined as 83.19 ± 0.56%, 1.11 ± 0.05%, 12.68 ± 0.57%, 1.13 ± 0.10% and 1.89 ± 0.14%, respectively. In this study, 3484 milk yield records (1520 first, 1206 second and 758 third lactations) obtained from 1816 cows born between 1990 and 1997 in the Holstein-Friesian herd of Ceylanpınar State Farm were used to estimate the heritabilities, and genetic and phenotypic correlations between lactation milk yields using an individual animal model and the restricted maximum likelihood (REML) method. The Effect Of Gnrh Administration On Plasma Progesterone And Reproductive Performance In Ewes, Mehmet Aki̇f Çam, Mehmet Kuran, Erdoğan Selçuk

Two experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of GnRH administration at mating and on day 12 post-mating on the reproductive performance of Karayaka and Sakız x Karayaka (F_2) crossbred sheep. In the first experiment, ewes were allocated into a control group (K, n = 27), and groups administered 4 µg GnRH at mating (A, n = 27), on day 12 post-mating (AS, n = 30) and both at mating and on day 12 post-mating (AAS, n = 30). GnRH administration in the A and AS groups increased plasma progesterone concentrations (P < 0.01). The pregnancy rate at first mating in the AS group (86.7%) was higher than those in the ASS (66.7%), A (51.9%) and K (51.9%) groups (P < 0.01). There was no difference between the treatment groups in terms of litter sizes (1.31, 1.21, 1.21 and 1.20 for AS, K, A and ASS, respectively). In the second experiment, ewes were allocated into 2 groups, a control group (K, n = 70) and a group administered 4 µg GnRH on day 12 post-mating (AS, n = 73). Chemical composition and microbiological quality of 40 döner samples (cooked) taken from 8 different restaurants in Erzurum city center were investigated. Total aerobic bacteria count was an average of 5.1 log CFU/g. In this study, the growth and viability status of Listeria monocytogenes were investigated during the ripening and storage period of sucuk (Turkish dry fermented sausage) produced using different lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillus plantarum Lb 8 and L. plantarum Lb 75, Pediococcus acidilactici Lb 626, P. pentosaceus Lb 1010, L. sakei 706 and L. sakei 706-B). The initial inoculum of L. monocytogenes into sucuk dough was 10^4 cfu/g. The aim of this study is to test the production of bacteriocin in vaginal Lactobacilli and determining the characterization and antibacterial activity of this bacteriocin. For this reason 100 Lactobacillus strains were isolated and identified from vaginal swab samples of 75 women who attended obstetric and gynecology clinics. It was determined that six of 100 Lactobacillus strains produced bacteriocin. The antibacterial activity of bacteriocins was examined and found to be effective on vaginal L. gasseri, L. acidophilus, Gardnerella vaginalis ATCC 14018 and Pseudomonas aeroginosa ATCC 10145. One hundred liver fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) specimens obtained from 42 patients with hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC), 38 patients with metastatic adenocarcinomas (MAC) and 20 patients with non-malignant liver disease (control group) were studied. Liver specimens were stained with an immunoperoxidase method using a monoclonal antibody to Ki-67 (MIB1). Oral cancers are malignancies that have high metastasis potential and thus survival rate of the patients is low. Today, epidemiological studies are being widely conducted on precancerous lesions, defined as predecessor lesions. In order to investigate the prevalence of oral precancerous lesions among Turkish people, 2000 consecutive outpatients who referred to our clinic for routine dental treatment, were examined. The proportion of lesions with potential to transform into cancer was 4.0%. It was concluded that leukoplakia and lichen planus were the most commonly observed precancerous lesions. All lesions had male propensity and the most affected site was the buccal mucosa. …

The aim of this study was to investigate the antibody response following immunization with plasmid vector DNA containing the hepatitis B virus core antigen (HBcAg) gene of a hepatitis B virus (HBV) isolated from a patient in Turkey. A HBcAg gene fragment was cloned into a pcDNA 3 eukaryotic expression vector. After confirmation of the cloning of the HBcAg gene, the expressing vector based HBcAg was used in DNA immunization experiments. Accurate, fast and economical urinary iodine measurement is very important in diagnosing iodine deficiency disorders. The urinary iodine determination method using ammonium persulfate digestion based on the Sandell-Kolthoff reaction was optimized and modified to kinetic and automated assay. Ammonium persulfate digestion was performed at +95 ºC in a water-bath to ± 0.1 ºC precision. The performance of both the Sandell-Kolthoff reaction at 37 ºC and its kinetic measurement at 340 nm was tested in a random access automated analyzer. In this study we investigated nitric oxide metabolites nitrate+nitrite and lipid peroxidation product (malonyldialdehyde: MDA) related to the pathogenesis of eclampsia and intrauterine growth retarded (IUGR) pregnancy. Plasma nitrate+nitrite levels were higher in the eclamptic (31.6 ± 16.7 µmol/L p < 0.001) and IUGR (24.3 ± 9.5 µmol/L p < 0.005) groups than in the control group (18.8 ± 6.9 µmol /L). Plasma MDA levels were higher in the eclamptic group (5.5 ± 2.5 nmol/ml (p < 0.05) but not significantly different in the IUGR (3.4 ± 2.4 nmol/ml p > 0.05) group than control group (3.0 ± 1.3 nmol/ml). In addition, the plasma nitrite+nitrate and MDA levels in the eclamptic group were higher than in the IUGR group (p < 0.05). These variations could play different roles in the pathogenesis of eclampsia and IUGR pregnancy.

Several factors may be responsible for the high prevalence of atherosclerosis in diabetes mellitus, including alterations in reverse cholesterol transport. In the present study, the activity of plasma lecithin:cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) and the cholesteryl ester transfer rate, and concentrations of lipids and lipoproteins were measured in 11 patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (type 1), 42 patients with noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (type 2) and compared with those in age-matched control groups (Control I, n = 14; and Control II, n = 29, respectively). The objective of this study was to determine the morphological effects of chronic nitric oxide (NO) inhibition on the thoracic aorta of Wistar rats. Fifteen male Wistar Albino rats were divided into three groups. Group I rats (control group, n = 5) received tap water, group II rats (n = 5) recieved 100 mg/kg L-NAME (moderate NO inhibiton) and group III rats (n = 5) received 500 mg/kg L-NAME, in drinking water (severe NO inhibition) for 15 days. A pilot study was undertaken to investigate the differences in oxidative DNA damage and 2-h DNA repair in peripheral lymphocytes between lung cancer patients and healthy subjects. Twenty-four lung cancer patients and 23 normal controls were recruited from the Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong SAR, China. Single cell gel electrophoresis (comet assay) was performed to measure the oxidative damage, repair and baseline of peripheral lymphocytes in the subjects. The role of endogenous fibrinolysis in cerebral infarction has been investigated, but with conflicting results. In this study, variations of tissue-type plasminogen activator (t-PA) antigen concentrations over time after stroke were examined at the acute and subacute phases of ischemic stroke in a group of patients and in a control group. The relationships between t-PA levels and stroke severity, lesion volume and clinical status were also investigated. Elevated plasma homocysteine concentration either in fasting state or after methionine loading is an independent risk factor for vascular disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between fasting total homocysteine (tHcy) and post-methionine load tHcy in healthy control subjects and in patients with angiographically defined coronary artery disease (CAD). The neural crest origin of the aortopulmonary septum has led us to investigate the septum. We designed the present study to assess the hemodynamic changes following aortopulmonary separation in the rat. We freed the ascending aorta from the pulmonary artery by blunt dissection and placed aluminium foil between them in anesthetized, ventilated, open-chest animals and found that the procedure resulted in a slight but significant increase in systolic and diastolic blood pressure and in an insignificant elevation of the heart rate.
