Homocysteine (tHcy) has been in routine use in many centers after this amino acid was reported as an independent risk factor for cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and peripheral vascular diseases. Many high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) methods including a commercially available kit (Chromsystems) were reported for measuring tHcy in biologic samples. Overt hypothyroidism is implicated in atherosclerosis through dyslipidemia, hypertension, and hyperhomoscysteinemia. Epidemiological data related to the role of thyroid hormones in the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) and metabolic syndrome (MS) in Turkish adults are lacking. Since leukoplakia is a premalignant condition, it is evident that an effective means of control would contribute to reducing the mortality and morbidity of oral cancer. The reactivity of free radicals and singlet oxygen is believed to be an important factor in the pathogenesis of many degenerative diseases including carcinogenesis. Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is an autoimmune disorder. Decreased platelet survival is the main pathogenesis, which is related to platelet antibodies (APA). The levels of these antibodies are correlated with relapse and remission which was shown for the first time by our group. Although APA levels decrease in remission they do not disappear as we have shown. The aim of this study was to develop a human tumor necrosis factor alpha (hTNF-\alpha) ELISA system because specific and sensitive measurement of low levels of circulating TNF-a is very important for enlightening the immunopathologial mechanisms associated with TNF-\alpha. Monoclonal antibodies 6A4c and 8A6 were produced against hTNF-\alpha and were used as the capture antibody and the tracer antibody respectively for the first hTNF-\alpha ELISA system (6A4c/biotin-8A6). Murine polyclonal IgG was used as the tracer antibody in the second hTNF-\alpha ELISA system (6A4c/biotin-polyclonal IgG). The purpose of this study was to examine and compare the effects of two different arches, the Connecticut Intrusion Arch (CIA) and the Utility Intrusion Arch (UIA). A total of 20 patients (15 girls and 5 boys) having Class I or Class II malocclusions with deep bite were divided into two groups. Lateral cephalograms were obtained before treatment and after intrusion of upper incisors. The aim of this work was to evaluate changes in lymphocyte subpopulations, especially helper and cytotoxic T cells, in acute brucellosis patients undergoing treatment. Forty-three acute brucellosis patients were included in the study. Twenty healthy subjects served as controls. Total lymphocytes and the CD3^+, CD4^+, CD8^+, CD19^+ and CD (16+56)^+ subpopulations were counted by two-color flow cytometric analysis. The CD4+ counts in patients before and after treatment were not statistically different (p = 0.7), but healthy subjects had significantly more of these cells (p = 0.001 and p = 0.001 compared to pre- and post-treatment patients, respectively). The imbalance between coagulation and fibrinolysis leads to vascular complications in diabetics. In our study, we have investigated the effects of the protein C-thrombomodulin system as a cause of diabetic vascular complications. Whereas PC-Ag levels were lower, thrombomodulin (TM) levels of diabetics were higher than that of the controls (P < 0.001, P < 0.001 respectively). Furthermore, patients were divided into three groups according to their urinary albumin excretion (UAE). Group 1, 2 and 3 consisted of 27 patients with UAC £ 30 µg/ml, 16 patients with UAC in range 30-140 µg/ml, 3 patients with UAC >140 µg/ml, respectively. Plasma PC-Ag levels were significantly decreased in group 1 and 2 with respect to controls (P < 0.01, P < 0.01). Plasma TM concentrations were significantly increased in group 1, 2 and 3 compared with the control group (P < 0.001, P < 0.01, P < 0.01). Patients were also divided into two groups according to the duration of their illness; patients whose diabetic age < 10 years (Group A) and whose diabetic age > 10 years (Group B). In both groups, PC-Ag levels were lower and TM levels higher than that of the control group (P < 0.01, P < 0.01; P < 0.001, P < 0.001 respectively). There was no significant difference between group A and B in PC-Ag levels (P > 0.50) but a significant difference in TM levels (P < 0.001).

The objective of this study is to evaluate effects of four dentin bonding agents PromptL-Pop, Syntac, Pekabond, Scotchbond-1 on cell proliferation in human gingival fibroblast cultures. Under aseptic conditions, test specimens were placed in the centre of 24-well tissue culture trays. Each well was covered at a concentration of 104 cells/cm2. The cultures were incubated at 37 ºC and cell proliferation was determined by the MTT method 24 h and 72 h after exposure. Statistical analysis was performed applying the Student t test. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the immunomodulatory effects of orally administered oxytetracycline HCl (OTC) of 75 mg/kg body weight for 10 days on the immune response in sea bream (Sparus aurata L. 1758) using the nitro blue tetrazolium (NBT) reduction test and erythrocyte and leucocyte counts. Administration of 75 mg/kg OTC for 10 days enhanced the non-specific immune response, and increased NBT (+) cell, total erythrocyte and leucocyte numbers in sea bream at 23 ± 1 ºC. Fearfulness reaction was examined using tonic immobility (TI) response and differential leucocyte counts as physiological indicators of distress from sire and dam brown layer lines. The study was performed on 20 male and 131 female chickens from the sire line and 24 male and 116 female chickens from the dam line. The duration of TI, the time interval until the bird righted itself, and the number of inductions (15 s periods of restraint) necessary to attain TI were recorded. The livers and lungs of 5596 sheep (443 local, 473 Romanian and 4680 Australian) slaughtered in Amman Central Abattoir during November-December 1999 were examined in routine meat inspection procedures for helminths. Dictyocaulus filaria, hydatid cyst, Fasciola hepatica and Dicrocoelium dendriticum were recovered from the examined sheep with variable prevalences. Dicrocoelium dendriticum is reported from the livers of imported sheep in Jordan for the first time.

Fifteen genotypes (F_1 and B_1) were obtained by crossbreeding in the Animal Research Institute in Konya from 1989 to 1996. This goal of the present research was to determine the possibility of twice-yearly lambing in Awassi sheep. The research was appropriate in terms of ecological agriculture, animal breeding applications, and organic agricultural production with no impact on their health or behavior, or exposure to environmental conditions such as exogenous hormone applications. The research was carried out after the February 2001 lambing season. Rams were introduced to the ewe flock while the lambs were weaning. This study was conducted to evaluate the fattening performance of Hasmer (31.25% Hampshire Down (HD) + 31.25% German Black Headed Mutton (GBM) + 37.50% Merino), Hasak (31.25% HD + 31.25% GBM + 37.50% Akkaraman), Hasiv (31.25% HD + 31.25% GBM + 37.50% Awassi) and Linmer (50% Lincoln + 50% Merino) types. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of Salmonella serogroups in chicken meat. A total of 315 skins from the wing part of chicken carcasses were collected from 8 chicken carcass retailers. Salmonella isolation was performed as described in the Bacteriological Analytical Manual of the Food and Drug Administration, Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica Serovar Enteritidis (Salmonella Enteritidis) in Serogroup D was isolated from 27 out of 315 (8.57%) chicken carcass skins from the wing parts. The aim of this study was to detect the seropositivity for Toxoplasma gondii in sheep in Şanlıurfa province using the Sabin-Feldman dye test. Serum samples collected from 300 sheep were tested for T. gondii. Serological examination revealed 167 (55.66%) sheep to be seropositive. Among these sera the numbers of seropositive samples at certain dilution steps were as follows: 65 at 1/16, 63 at 1/64, 27 at 1/256 and 12 at 1/1024. There was no significant correlation between seropositivity and the factors age, sex and breed. In conclusion, detection of a 34% seropositivity rate in 1/64 and higher dilutions indicates the …

The sero-prevalence of contagious ecthyma (orf) in lambs and humans was studied in the Kars region of Turkey. For this purpose, serum samples were collected from 320 lambs from 5 different districts of the Kars region. Serum samples were also collected from 100 humans at risk of infection. The serum samples were tested for the presence of antibodies to orf virus by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The results showed that 52.81% and 5% of the serum samples collected from lambs and humans, respectively, were seropositive for orf virus. Total gastrectomy is widely used as a major surgical treatment for gastric cancer. The aims of this study were to investigate the possible effects of total gastrectomy on pancreas morphology, and to determine the immunolocalisation of chromogranin A (Cg A) and synaptophysin (SYP) antigens, described as specific tumour markers for neuroendocrine tumours. Ten rats underwent total gastrectomy via oesophago-duodenostomy. After a month the rats were killed, and tissue samples were taken from the pancreas, processed for light microscopy and stained with haematoxylin-eosin. The histochemical and ultrastructural effects of water Cu on the anterior latissimus dorsi (ALD) muscle of 120 newly hatched broilers were investigated in a 45-day experiment. Two doses of water Cu (250 mg Cu/kg water and 500 mg Cu/kg water) were given to the poults. Two distinct categories (IIIA and IIIB) of slow tonic fibers in the control groups were detected by enzyme reactions. The ultrastructure of the Z-line, mitochondrial content and sarcotubular content differed between the 2 fiber types.
