This study presents the data from a morphologic deformation diagnosis of a speckled ray (Raja polystigma Regan, 1923) individual which was sampled from İzmir Bay. Deformation was located on the head part of the specimen and no deformation was observed in other body regions.

This study was conducted to determine the effects of 2 lighting programs (continuous: 24 h light:0 h dark; intermittent: 12 h daylight followed by 3 cycles of 1 h light, and then 3 h dark during the night) and 3 ascorbic acid supplementations (0, 200, and 400 mg/L added to water) on broiler performance, bone characteristics, and the incidence of tibial dyschondroplasia. The present study examined the mammary glands and supramammary lymph nodes of cows with a history of abortion due to Brucella abortus, and presents the histopathological, immunohistochemical, and bacteriological results. The study included 11 Brucella-seropositive cows that aborted during their first gestation. Histopathologically, the mammary glands showed lymphoplasmacytic and histiocytic interstitial mastitis. The lymph nodes had lymphofollicular hyperplasia and medullary plasmacytosis. Immunohistochemistry results showed brucellar antigens, predominantly in the cytoplasm of macrophages, and neutrophils in the intralobular interstitium and periductal stroma in the udders of 3 cows. Ulcerative lymphangitis, or pigeon fever, is a bacterial infection of the lymphatic vessels of the skin in horses, cattle, sheep, and goats. Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis is the classical cause of the disease. However, other pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus have been isolated from cases of ulcerative lymphangitis. The aim of this report is to review the causes of pyoderma and skin abscesses in horses with specific attention to Staphylococcus aureus. The efficacy of 2-phenoxyethanol (2-PhOH) as an anaesthetic for the musky octopus, Eledone moschata (Lamarck, 1799), was examined. Different doses (1.0, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, and 1.8 mL L^{-1}) of 2-PhOH were prepared in 20 L transparent plastic containers containing 10 L of continually aerated seawater (pH 8.2, O2 8 mg L^{-1}, salinity 37.2 per thousand at 15.3 °C). The prevalence, intensity, and pathology of a Myxobolus sp. affecting the kidneys of cultured Diplodus puntazzo C. during the period 2003-2005 are described. The study included data collected from the largest farm in southern Greece where a high rate of mortality due to myxosporean infection occurred. Sharp snout seabream reared in sea cages in southern Greece underwent microbiological, parasitological, and histological examinations, while measurement and identification of parasites was performed immediately after sampling. The present study provides the results from a comparative study of the 3 commonly used methods for total protein (TP) measurement. The experiments were carried out with 6 dogs (4-7 year-old, weighing 12.8 ± 1.4 kg). Five blood samples were obtained by saphena venepuncture from all dogs, during the time course of the experimentally induced infection with Staphylococcus intermedius, administered subcutaneously at a dose rate of 5 ml of 1.10^9 CFU/ml within 14 days. The fatty acid content and chemical composition of retail samples of beef and lamb meat were investigated. Fifty beef and lamb chops were purchased from different supermarkets in İstanbul on separate occasions. The average muscle fatty acid content was 2395 and 2257 mg/100 g of muscle for beef and lamb, respectively. Saturated and polyunsaturated fatty acid contents were 1000 and 940 mg/100 g, and 199 and 261 mg/100 g of muscle for beef and lamb, respectively. Overall results indicate that, particularly before the Sacrifice Holiday, concentrate-based feeding of livestock increases and this has an adverse effect on the n-6/n-3 ratio …

A 1-year-old male Dalmatian dog with urinary obstruction was examined on an emergency basis. The macroscopic urine examination, direct radiography, positive contrast cystography, and ultrasonography revealed urolithiasis. Histology of the vesica urinaria showed urolith particles deeply embedded in a membrane on the mucosa. This is not commonly seen in dogs with urolithiasis.

The medical records of dogs admitted to the Department of Surgery, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ankara University for central nervous system disorders were reviewed, and dogs with intracranial tumors that were diagnosed with MRI between November 1997 and June 2006 were included in the study. An outbreak of industrial chronic copper poisoning in Iranian fat-tailed sheep in a region of southeast Iran is described. At least 10,000 out of 75,000 sheep (13.3%) originating from 50 flocks died over a period of 3 years in the Khatoon Abad region in Kerman province, Iran. The diagnosis was based on epidemiological, clinical, hematological, serum biochemical, urinalysis, necropsy and histopathological evaluations. Then findings were confirmed by toxicological analysis of liver and kidney samples. The details of epidemiological, clinical, laboratory and pathologic findings are described in the manuscript. The expression of the calcium-binding protein S100 and its subunits \alpha and \beta in the intracellular protozoon Eimeria tenella was investigated. For this purpose, anti-S100 whole molecule polyclonal antibody and anti-S100 \alpha and anti-S100 \beta monoclonal antibodies were used on paraffin sections collected from the cecum, ileum, colon, rectum, and bursa of Fabricius of chicks experimentally infected with E. tenella. A total of 181 Jersey cows were used to investigate how leptin gene polymorphisms affect milk production traits such as milk yield, fat and protein yield, and fat and protein content. Two single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were genotyped, including the A59V in exon 3 and Sau3AI in intron 2. The genotype, allele, and haplotype frequencies were estimated. Lung, trachea, and serum samples obtained from turkeys showing clinical signs of respiratory disease were examined for the presence of Bordetella avium infection (bordetellosis) using culture, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The material of this study consisted of 2 live turkeys at the age of 24 weeks with respiratory distress, nasal discharge, and cough that had been brought to the Microbiology Laboratory of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Adnan Menderes University. Fatal pulmonary aspergillosis and AA type amyloid accumulations in the liver and spleen are described in a female ostrich (Struthio camelus). The animal had had respiratory problems and long-term inappetence over an 8-week period. Necropsy revealed that several soft, grayish to white nodules ranging from 1 to 3 mm in diameter were scattered throughout the lungs and thoracic air sacs. Prominent enlargement of the liver and spleen was observed. No gross lesions were found in the other organs studied. A 7-year-old spayed female domestic shorthair cat was presented because of post-prandial regurgitation, gasping shortly after eating, weight loss, dyspnea, and tachypnea. Six months prior to the onset of these signs the cat had received nutritional support via gastrostomy and then nasogastric tubes. A diagnosis of esophageal diverticulum was made on the basis of clinical features, contrast esophagram, and endoscopy, and was considered a complication of tube feeding. Medical therapy, including parenteral fluids, ranitidine, metoclopramide, and cisapride, and a soft, bland low-fat diet resulted in improvement in the clinical signs within 1 week. In order to evaluate heat tolerance, physiological constants of 32 cows were measured (Chinampo: n = 12; Holstein: n = 10; Jersey: n = 10). From June to December 2006, rectal temperature and respiratory rate were recorded every Monday at 0600 and 1700 h. Holstein rectal temperature was affected by heat most, followed by Jersey, and Chinampo (the most heat-resistant). Respiratory rate of the 3 breeds was affected by climatic factors, but the Holstein and Jersey cows registered values higher than those of Chinampo cows. With a temperature-humidity index (THI) above 72 the physiological variables of all 3 breeds increased. …

The effect of acupuncture therapy on the healing process of the calcaneal tendon (tendo calcaneus communis) of the dog was evaluated after tendon splitting in 10 adult mixed breed dogs. Complete, full thickness splitting of the right Achilles tendon, 2 cm in length, was performed using a scalpel blade. The dogs were randomly divided into 2 groups (group 1 and 2) of 5 dogs each. The aim of this study was to identify the presence and prevalence of bovine tuberculosis in the eastern Anatolian border province of Van and its villages and to collect the preliminary data required for programs for the prevention and control of this zoonotic disease. The tuberculin test was performed on 210 cattle. Nasal swab and milk samples were obtained from the animals tested. Two experiments were conducted to study the silage characteristics and nutritive value of Damascus rose extraction residue (RER) which is a by-product remained after the extraction of rose water in some parts of Iran. This study was carried out to determine the effects of oxalic acid (OA) on reducing Varroa mite (Varroa destructor) populations in honeybee (Apis mellifera L.) colonies in the fall. Twenty honeybee colonies, in wooden Langstroth hives, were used in this experiment. Average Varroa infestation levels (%) of the OA and control groups were 25.87% and 24.57% on adult workers before the treatments. Clinical and laboratory findings recorded in 10 dogs naturally infected with Hepatozoon canis in the Aegean region of Turkey were reported. The diagnosis was made by finding H. canis gamonts within leucocytes in Giemsa-stained blood smears. H. canis parasitaemia level was calculated manually by counting 500 neutrophils in blood smears. Parasitaemia varied from 1% to 23% of the circulating neutrophils. Anorexia, fever, depression, weight loss, and lymphadenopathy are the main clinical signs in infected dogs. Investigations regarding renal clearance and urinary excretion of ciprofloxacin were carried out in buffaloes, cows, sheep, and goats. The drug was administered intramuscularly at a dose of 5 mg/kg body weight. The plasma and urine concentrations of the drug were determined with HPLC. Renal clearance of endogenous creatinine was used as an index of glomerular filtration rate (GFR). In buffaloes, it was 0.72 ± 0.15 (mean ± SE), in cows 0.36 ± 0.09, in sheep 1.33 ± 0.35, and in goats 1.87 ± 0.38 mL/min/kg. Total of 500 samples from triceps, gluteal and diaphragm muscles, kidney, and liver, were obtained randomly from beef carcasses of a slaughterhouse in Tabriz. We measured oxytetracycline, tetracycline, and chlortetracycline (TCs) residues by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method. Seventy four percent of samples (380 samples) had detectable TCs residues. The mean amounts of oxytetracycline, tetracycline, and chlortetracycline residues in all samples were 52.2, 33.8, and 125.2 µg/kg, respectively. The vitamin and mineral contents of pike perch (Sander lucioperca), common carp (Cyprinus carpio), and European catfish (Silurus glanis) were determined in this study. The lowest water content (76.79 g/100 g) and the highest ash (1.17 g/100 g) and fat (3.5 g/100 g) contents were determined in common carp. The highest water (81.81 g/100 g) and lowest protein contents (17.17 g/100 g) were found in European catfish sample. A 3-year-old East Friesian sheep from a sheep flock that suffered from chronic copper poisoning was forwarded to the Clinic of Farm Animals in the Aristotle University. The animal had signs of a hemolytic disease indicative of chronic copper poisoning and also nervous signs. Laboratory examinations were consistent with chronic copper poisoning. This was confirmed after necropsy and liver toxicological analysis. By blood smear examination, metarubricytosis, basophilic stippling, anisocytosis, and polychromasia were found. Also, brain histopathological examination revealed focal areas of gliosis in the cerebral cortex and white matter areas. Aim: Falls from a height and their subsequent injuries and traumas can cause morbidity and death. In the present study, ISS, NISS, RTS, and TRISS values were analyzed to assess mortality probabilities of patients who fell from a height. Materials and Methods: Patients' age, gender, height of falls (0-2 m, 3-5 m, and 6 m and above), organ pathologies, and ISS, NISS, RTS, and TRISS scores were evaluated in terms of mortality.
