Although the Pap smear is a common screening test for cervical cancer and its precursors, it can detect some benign conditions as well. In this study, the aim was to evaluate smear results with regard to nonneoplastic findings and to compare them to the detectable effects of intrauterine devices (IUDs) and oral contraceptive pills (OPs). Materials and methods: In this retrospective study, the hospital records and cytopathology reports of 4248 patients were recorded. Smear results were evaluated according to the 2001 Bethesda System and were evaluated according to age groups, menopausal/menstrual status, physical examination findings, and contraceptive method usage. Results: …

To create a new scoring system for femoral pseudoaneurysm (FPA) formation after diagnostic or interventional cardiac catheterization. Materials and methods: We evaluated 41,322 transfemoral catheterization procedures performed in our center within 7 years. Among all procedures, 630 FPAs developed that required surgical repair. Eighty-five cases were managed by compression with duplex guidance. As a case-control group, 1260 patients were selected from the patients who had been catheterized during the same time period but did not develop FPA. We created the risk scoring system according to body mass index, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, catheter diameter, coronary artery disease, atherosclerosis, and number of …

We investigated the effects of acetyl shikonin isolated from Onosma armeniacum on ethanol-induced gastric injury (ulcer) and on oxidant-antioxidant parameters in the gastric tissue of rats. Materials and methods: Eighteen albino Wistar male rats were divided into 3 different experimental groups. Group 1 (n = 6) was the control group, group 2 (n = 6) was the ethanol group, and group 3 (n = 6) was the acetyl shikonin + ethanol group. The animals in group 3 were given ethanol (1 mL, 50% v/v) 30 min after acetyl shikonin (40 mg/kg) administration by orogastric tube. Results: The lowest mean nitric …
