Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
A 10-month-old, unilateral cryptorchid, male English bulldog underwent urethropexy for the treatment of urethral prolapse. Six hours after surgery the dog developed dysuria, haematuria, discomfort, severe penile oedema, inflammation, and inability to extrude the penis from the prepuce. Urethral patency was restored by placing an indwelling catheter into the urethral lumen. Penile swelling was managed with cold and warm compresses for 2 days, and antibiotics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and opioids for 4 days. Complete resolution of the swelling was evident by 3 days after surgery. One year after surgery the dog was reported to be in good health.

Risk Factors For Postpartum Anestrus In Crossbred Cows In Bangladesh, Md Mostofa Kamal, Md Musharraf Uddin Bhuiyan, Nasreen Parveen, Harry W. Momont, Mohammed Shamsuddin
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Ultrasonography and a structured questionnaire were used in a cross-sectional study to gather data on the prevalence and risk factors for anestrus in crossbred cows at =>60 days postpartum in 273 smallholder farms. The prevalence of anestrus was 18%. The odds ratio (OR) for true anestrus was 17.52 and 2.81 times higher (P < 0.05) in cows with poor (=3.5) body condition score (BCS), respectively, compared to those with optimal BCS (2.5-3.5), 2.82 times higher in suckled than in nonsuckled cows (P = 0.03), and 2.53 times higher in cows that calved during the cold season than in those that calved during the hot season (P = 0.03). The OR for anestrus was 1.62 times higher (P = 0.017) in cows managed by an employee than in those managed by the farmers themselves (P = 0.001), and 2.66 times higher (P = 0.003) in small farms (=11 cows). The OR was 0.71 to 0.46 times lower in farms having a guaranteed market to sell milk than those with an uncertain traditional milk market (P < 0.05). Maintaining optimal BCS of cows, farmers' training on management of cattle reproduction, and development of a market linkage to sell milk would improve the number of cows for breeding by 60 days postpartum.

Folate And Homocysteine Metabolisms And Their Roles In The Biochemical Basis Of Neuropsychiatry, Alpaslan Coşar, Osman Meti̇n İpci̇oğlu, Ömer Özcan, Mustafa Gültepe
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
The term 'one-carbon metabolism' is commonly used to describe 3 separate metabolic processes: folate metabolism, the homocysteine remethylation cycle, and the transsulfuration pathway. Folate metabolism concerns the biochemical reactions in which endogenous and exogenous one-carbon units are transferred to tetrahydrofolates. The remethylation cycle is used for the synthesis of methionine from homocysteine with one-carbon units that come from folate. This methionine is then used for the synthesis of S-adenosyl methionine, which is a general donor of methyl groups for many biochemical reactions in the human body. In the transsulfuration pathway, some amino acids and polypeptides, such as cystathionine, cysteine, and …

To investigate the diagnostic value of ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) in the diagnosis of patients with aortic aneurysm. Materials and methods: The study group consisted of 98 patients who presented to our university hospital emergency department with aortic pathology and were definitively diagnosed using spiral tomography. The control group consisted of 101 healthy individuals with similar demographic characteristics. Results: Mean IMA values were 0.89 ± 0.21 absorbance units (ABSU) in the aortic aneurysm group (P < 0.001), 0.70 ± 0.12 ABSU in the aortic dissection group (P < 0.001), 0.98 ± 0.23 ABSU in the aneurysm and dissection group (P < 0.001), 0.84 ± 0.16 ABSU in the aneurysm and rupture group (P < 0.001), and 0.87 ± 0.27 ABSU in the aneurysm, dissection, and rupture group (P < 0.001). Mean IMA value for the subjects in the control group was 0.62 ± 0.17 ABSU. All the differences between the aortic pathology groups' IMA values and those of the control group were statistically significant (P < 0.001). Conclusion: On the basis of the findings from this study, serum IMA levels are higher in patients with aortic pathology compared to healthy individuals. This finding suggests that IMA may help to diagnose aortic pathology, but it requires confirmation by additional clinical studies.

To increase the awareness of environmental risk factors by determining the indoor air quality status of primary schools. Materials and methods: Indoor air quality parameters in 172 classrooms of 31 primary schools in Keçiören, Ankara, were examined for the purpose of assessing the levels of air pollutants (CO, CO_2, SO_2, NO_2, and formaldehyde) within primary schools. Results: Schools near heavy traffic had a statistically significant mean average of CO and SO_2 (P < 0.05). The classrooms that had more than 35 students had higher and statistically significant averages of CO_2, SO_2, NO_2, and formaldehyde compared to classrooms that had fewer than 35 students (P < 0.05). Of all classrooms, 29% had 100 CFU/100 mL and higher concentrations of microorganisms, which were not pathogens. Conclusion: Indoor air quality management should continually be maintained in primary schools for the prevention and control of acute and chronic diseases, particularly considering biological and chemical pollution.
