Aim: This study was performed to compare the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome (MES) according to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and Adult Treatment Panel III (ATPIII) definitions in a population-based sample and to determine the concordance of the definitions. Materials and Methods: A total of 244 adults aged >=20 years (145 women and 99 men), selected systematically from household registration cards in a rural village in West Anatolia, were analyzed. Kappa test was done to examine the agreement between the definitions. Results: The mean age of the group was 46.9 ± 14.9 years. The prevalence of MES using ATPIII …

Aim: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused in particular by extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli strains are related with high morbidity and mortality, and treatment is quite difficult. These infections generally are treated by carbapenems, and their costs are high. We aimed in this study to investigate the susceptibilities of ESBL-producing E. coli strains isolated from urine cultures to fosfomycin, ciprofloxacin, amikacin and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and to determine the general resistance profile in our region of these strains isolated from UTIs. Materials and Methods: Between January 2005-December 2005, ESBL-producing E. coli strains isolated from urine samples sent from various outpatient and inpatient …

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate patients attending a sexually transmitted infection (STI) outpatient clinic with a presumptive or definitive diagnosis of syphilis with regard to demographic characteristics, clinical findings, diagnostic criteria, treatment regimens and follow-up data over a 10-year period. Materials and Methods: The records of patients who had a presumptive/definitive diagnosis of syphilis [according to Centers for Disease Control (CDC) criteria] and who were referred to the İzmir State Venereal Diseases Outpatient Clinic or who were diagnosed in the clinic between 1994 and 2004 were reviewed retrospectively. Results: A total of 689 patients were included …

Aims: Determinations of drug impurity and drug degradation products are very important from both pharmacological and toxicological perspectives. Establishment of monitoring methods for impurities and degradation products during pharmaceutical development is necessary because of their potential toxicity. The aim of this study was to develop a rapid and simultaneous determination method for paracetamol and acetylsalicylic acid (ACA) and their degradation and toxic impurity products by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) in pharmaceutical dosage forms. Materials and Methods: A reverse phase (RP)-HPLC method for the simultaneous analysis of paracetamol, ACA, and ascorbic acid and their degradation and impurity products such as …
