Predatory publishing has become an increasing problem in recent years. Due to a lack of awareness about predatory publishers, faculty authors are at risk of harming their reputations by publishing their research in questionable journals. Librarians can play a vital role in educating faculty authors about this important topic. This session will review a variety of outreach and educational efforts that have been successful in educating faculty about the risks of predatory publishing at Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library including the creation of a comprehensive LibGuide, faculty consultation services, workshops, and social media posts. Background: Puerto Rico is among the areas with the highest estimated rates of people living with HIV in the United States. Despite the epidemiologic data available, there is limited real-world information that can help understand the comorbidities of people with HIV. In this study, we describe common comorbidities among adults with HIV attending treatment clinics in Puerto Rico.

Methods: An exploratory, retrospective, cross-sectional study was conducted at five HIV clinics in Puerto Rico. A random sample of medical records was reviewed. Background: Optical mapping of transmembrane voltage and intracellular calcium is a powerful tool for investigating cardiac physiology and pathophysiology. However, simultaneous dual mapping of two fluorescent probes remains technically challenging. We introduce a novel, easy-to-use approach that requires a path splitter, single camera and excitation light to simultaneously acquire voltage and calcium signals from whole heart preparations, which can be applied to other physiological models - including neurons and isolated cardiomyocytes.

A patient presents to a Maryland clinic complaining of a dry red, bleeding, crusting, painful, non-itchy rash which started on her right forearm, 3-1/2 days ago. It spread to the trunk, face and thighs. The patient is complaining of fatigue, bilateral eye and mastoid pain, frontal headache, sore scalp, and bone pain. She reported no exposure, or travel but does have contact with children. She had childhood measles and chickenpox. The patient had tried oral tetracycline. Intensive courses (ICs), or accelerated courses, are gaining popularity in medical and health professions education, particularly as programs adopt e-learning models to negotiate challenges of flexibility, space, cost, and time. In 2014, the Department of Clinical Research and Leadership (CRL) at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences began the process of transitioning two online 15-week graduate programs to an IC model. Within a year, a third program also transitioned to this model. Laser speckle contrast imaging (LSCI) utilizes the speckle pattern of a laser to determine the blood flow in tissues. The current approaches for its use in a clinical setting require a camera system with a laser source on a separate optical axis making it unsuitable for minimally invasive surgery (MIS). With blood flow visualization, bowel viability, for example, can be determined. Thus, LSCI can be a valuable tool in gastrointestinal surgery. BACKGROUND: Cabotegravir (CAB) is a novel strand-transfer integrase inhibitor being developed for HIV treatment and prevention. CAB is formulated both as an immediate-release oral tablet for daily administration and as a long-acting injectable suspension (long-acting CAB [CAB LA]) for intramuscular (IM) administration, which delivers prolonged plasma exposure to the drug after IM injection. HIV Prevention Trials Network study 077 (HPTN 077) evaluated the safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics of CAB LA in HIV-uninfected males and females at 8 sites in Brazil, Malawi, South Africa, and the United States.

Consistent medication adherence by study participants is essential for producing valid and reliable safety and efficacy data in clinical trials. Adherence to investigational medications can be a challenge, particularly for study participants who have complex medication regimens, a stigmatized illness such as HIV/AIDS or a mental health disorder, and risk factors for poor adherence such as young or old age, poor health status, cognitive issues, low health literacy, and low socioeconomic status. HIV infection is associated with the increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), even in patients successfully treated with the combination antiretroviral therapy (cART). However, the relationship between HIV, cART, and pathogenesis of CVD remains controversial. In the present study, we evaluated the carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT), a surrogate marker of atherosclerosis, in HIV-infected subjects receiving or not receiving cART. One hundred nine newly diagnosed HIV-infected subjects and one hundred nine uninfected age-matched controls (all males) without the history of CVD, hypertension, or diabetes were recruited into the present study. Background: Heart failure (HF) is a chronic condition where the heart cannot pump enough blood to adequately oxygenate cells. The CardioMEMS HF device is implanted into the pulmonary artery (PA) allowing practitioners to monitor pressures remotely and prescribe interventions. Objectives: The primary purpose of this project was to determine if CardioMEMS is an effective intervention in the reduction of hospital admissions, emergency department (ED), and clinic visits for HF patients. Long-chain fatty acid oxidation disorders (LC-FAOD) are rare disorders characterized by acute crises of energy metabolism and severe energy deficiency that may present with cardiomyopathy, hypoglycemia, and/or rhabdomyolysis, which can lead to frequent hospitalizations and early death. An open-label Phase 2 study evaluated the efficacy of UX007, an investigational odd-carbon medium-chain triglyceride, in 29 subjects with severe LC-FAOD. UX007 was administered over 78 weeks at a target dose of 25-35% total daily caloric intake (mean 27.5%). BACKGROUND: To understand the relationship between regulatory B cells (Bregs) and juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), we analyzed the percentages of Bregs and their function in peripheral blood (PB) and synovial fluid (SF) of JIA patients.

METHODS: Twenty-one JIA patients and 11 children with growing pain but without known rheumatic diseases as controls were included. The B cell phenotype and intracellular production of IL-10 of Bregs were assessed by flow cytometry. Mononuclear cells from PB and SF were stimulated to produce IL-10 in vitro for the identification of IL-10- producing regulatory B cells.
