We investigated the role of copy number variations (CNVs) in Parkinson's disease (PD) using genotyping data from 10,815 patients (2731 early-onset PD, EOPD) and 8901 controls from the COURAGE-PD consortium. CNVs were analyzed using a sliding window genome-wide association and burden approach. No genome-wide significant CNVs were detected in the overall cohort, but a robust deletion spanning exons 2-6 of PRKN was identified in EOPD cases, validated by MLPA, and replicated in the GP2 dataset (23,089 cases, 18,824 controls). CNV burden was significantly enriched in PD-related genes, primarily driven by PRKN, with the strongest effect observed in EOPD. PRKN CNV …

Tellurium dioxide (TeO2) nanoparticles were synthesized by pulsed laser ablation in liquids (PLAL) using a bottom-ablation configuration, with deionized water as the solvent and pure tellurium pellets as the target. The resulting nanoparticles were spherical, with an average diameter of 56 ± 13 nm. Phase analysis indicated that the nanoparticles consisted mainly of around 83% of paratellurite α-TeO2, with a minor fraction, i.e., around 17% of the metastable γ-TeO2 phase. The antibacterial performance of the TeO2 nanoparticles was evaluated against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), demonstrating broad-spectrum antibacterial activity at concentrations as low as …

Depressive symptoms frequently follow exposure to major life stressors, such as spousal bereavement. However, long-term mental well-being varies considerably. Previously, daily negative affect significantly predicted future depressive symptoms. Higher daily negative affect may signify worse long-term mental health for individuals who also show enhanced inflammatory responses to acute stress, as heightened physiological reactivity to acute stress has been linked with increased susceptibility to depression. Among widow(er)s, we examined whether stress-induced inflammatory responses altered the magnitude of the association between daily negative affect and future depressive symptoms. In exploratory analyses, we examined whether these patterns differed between bereaved and nonbereaved adults. …
Enhancing Provider Self-Efficacy And Documentation In Hypertension Management, Stephanie Nsiah
Enhancing Provider Self-Efficacy And Documentation In Hypertension Management, Stephanie Nsiah
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Primary care providers often experience inconsistent confidence and incomplete documentation when managing hypertension, contributing to suboptimal blood pressure control. This quality improvement project addressed the need for structured provider education at an outpatient family clinic. The purpose was to evaluate the impact of a structured educational intervention on provider self-efficacy and documentation completeness. Using a quasi-experimental pre-post design guided by the Plan-Do-Study-Act model and Lewin's Change Theory, a 60-minute educational session was delivered to 12 licensed providers. Participants completed pre- and post-intervention self-efficacy surveys using the Acceptability of Intervention Measure (AIM) and Intervention Appropriateness Measure (IAM) and Feasibility of Intervention …

Lipid injectable emulsions (ILE) are essential components of parenteral nutrition in neonatal intensive care units. Over the past two decades, the expanded availability of ILE has led to rapid changes in clinical practice, largely driven by concerns about intestinal failure–associated liver disease. Despite these evolving trends, the evidence supporting one ILE over another remains limited and nuanced. Importantly, no currently available ILE replicates the intrauterine supply of critical long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly arachidonic acid and docosahexaenoic acid, both of which decline postnatally regardless of emulsion type. Neonates requiring ILE represent a heterogeneous population of preterm and term infants, with …

Demodex blepharitis is a chronic inflammatory ocular condition caused by Demodex mite infestation of the eyelid that can negatively impact quality of life. Currently, lotilaner ophthalmic solution 0.25% is the only FDA-approved treatment for Demodex blepharitis. The Demodex Expert Panel on Treatment and Eyelid Health has established consensus that lotilaner ophthalmic solution 0.25% should be considered the preferred first-line treatment for Demodex blepharitis. We report a patient who presented with collarettes, the pathognomonic sign of Demodex blepharitis, meibomian gland dysfunction, and poor visual acuity. The patient also had a history of neovascular age-related macular degeneration. Consistent with the Demodex Expert …

While chemotherapy-induced tumor cell death is known to modulate the local immune landscape, its systemic impact on distant bone marrow—a site essential for immune cell maturation—remains underexplored. Here, we show that gemcitabine chemotherapy induces inflammatory caspase-1-dependent pyroptosis in epithelial cancer cells (epiCaspase-1). Despite its inflammatory nature, epiCaspase-1-mediated cell death is non-immunogenic. Clinically, elevated expression of an epiCaspase-1 gene signature correlates with worse patient outcomes. Mechanistically, epiCaspase-1 triggers the noncanonical release of IL-1α through NINJ1 lytic pores, remotely skewing bone marrow hematopoiesis towards granulocyte-monocyte progenitors and mature neutrophil output. This systemic reprogramming elevates the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in both peripheral blood …

Analyzer-Less X-Ray Interferometry With Super-Resolution Methods, Murtuza S. Taqi
Analyzer-Less X-Ray Interferometry With Super-Resolution Methods, Murtuza S. Taqi
LSU Master's Theses
X-ray interferometry provides valuable information on attenuation, small-angle scattering, and differential phase contrast. This multi-modal contrast can aid in many clinical applications, such as lung diseases and breast cancer. However, standard inter- ferometry has an analyzer grating that can increase the dose requirement to maintain the same image quality as a standard X-ray. We propose the use of super-resolution methods for X-ray grating interferometry without an analyzer, with detectors that fail to meet the Nyquist sampling rate needed for traditional image recovery algorithms. Detector phase- steps are used to nominally recover the sampling and iteratively recover the visibility and the …

From Tradition To Transition: Evaluating Culinary Medicine As A Tool For Metabolic Health Among Nigerian Immigrants In The United States And The United Kingdom, Simi Oduwole M.S.
Department of Nutrition Student Projects
This scoping review examines existing publications to evaluate whether Culinary Medicine can be used as a tool for metabolic health among Nigerian immigrants in the United States and the United Kingdom. Nigeria is one of the fastest-growing populations globally, with increasing migration to high-income countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom. Evidence suggests that Nigerian immigrants experience a rise in diet-related chronic diseases, including obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, as duration of residence increases. This phenomenon is often attributed to dietary acculturation and shifts toward Westernized eating patterns. This scoping review evaluates whether culinary medicine can mitigate …

Capstone Projects
This capstone paper discusses the need for resources that support independence in and access to nature-based activities that support health and wellbeing. Occupational therapists (OTs) have expertise in recommending and implementing adaptations to increase individuals’ engagement in nature-based activities. There is currently a gap in the literature regarding access to nature-based activities, and a lack of understanding of how these activities may be implemented, either by caregivers, educators or healthcare professionals. During my capstone I created a guide with modifications for gardening activities for children, wrote an article on how to adapt nature journaling to be more accessible, coded and …

Organic Synthesis Of A Hydrazine Functionalized Ammonium Compound For Improved Capture Of Aldehyde Metabolites From Exhaled Breath, Po'iu N. Burgo
Undergraduate Theses
Breath analysis has emerged as a non-invasive and inexpensive way to screen for respiratory diseases. This technique involves measuring concentrations of specific metabolites found in exhaled breath that serve as a biomarkers for disease. A subclass of volatile organic compounds called α,β-Unsaturated aldehydes, products of the lipid peroxidation mechanism, are underrepresented as biomarkers of lung cancer. These have been found to have relatively increased concentrations in the exhaled breath of lung cancer patients compared to a healthy patient. One of the reasons that these metabolites have been underreported is that the techniques used to measure and characterized exhaled metabolites do …

Dnp Final Report: Can Implementing A Mindfulness-Based Program Help Reduce Stress In Nursing Students?, Shelby Devreeze Msn, Rn, Cpn, Cne-Cl
DNP Final Reports
Stress among nursing students is a well-documented problem that contributes to physical, mental, and emotional issues, substance abuse, and program dropout. A mindfulness-based stress reduction program was implemented with nursing students to evaluate its impact on perceived stress levels over a five-week period. A review of evidence-based articles provides strong evidence that this intervention correlates with reduced reported stress. An MBSRP was implemented with nursing students who completed a Perceived Stress Scale 10 (PSS-10) before the intervention and again after five weeks.
Results from this project showed a statistically significant reduction (t=2.725, p=0.025) in stress among the nursing student population …

Conference Presentation Abstracts
OBJECTIVE: Cost conservation and value are major components of orthopedic surgery and health economics. A frequent measure used to mitigate cost is the utilization of same day discharge (SDD) after total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA). The purpose of this study was to investigate if patient travel distance is associated with safe SDD. Secondarily, we aimed to identify other patient factors associated with safe SDD. Our hypothesis was that increased travel distance would be associated with decreased SDD. METHODS: This retrospective review included all patients undergoing primary anatomic or reverse total shoulder arthroplasty by at a single institution between January 2021 to …

This doctoral capstone experience (DCE) was completed in the Emergency Department (ED) at Bronson Methodist Hospital, where individuals experiencing homelessness frequently present with unmet mental health needs. A gap was identified in the accessibility and utilization of community-based mental health and social resources, contributing to repeated ED utilization. The purpose of this DCE was to examine how resource provisions impact the frequency of ED visits and engagement with community mental health services among this population. Objectives include developing …
Advocating For Occupational Therapy Services In Adult Outpatient Physical Therapy Clinics: Enhancing Interprofessional Collaborative Care, Hannah Peyerk
Capstone Projects
The topic of this capstone project is to define occupational therapy’s (OT) role at an adult outpatient physical therapy (PT) clinic. The project focuses on advocacy and education related to OT’s scope of practice and role on an outpatient interdisciplinary team. Literature suggests that healthcare professionals have limited understanding of OT’s specific roles on the rehabilitation team. This can impact referrals and involvement of OT in interprofessional collaboration. The best way to advocate and educate about OT’s role is by active collaboration with other healthcare professionals. Role Of Occupational Therapy In Hippotherapy And Therapeutic Riding: A Mental Health Perspective, Ava Morrison
Capstone Projects
The purpose of my doctoral capstone experience (DCE) was to gain knowledge about the unique role that occupational therapy (OT) plays in equine-assisted therapy at the Cheff Therapeutic Riding Center, with an emphasis on Therapeutic Riding. Equine-assisted therapy, including hippotherapy and therapeutic riding, is an emerging area of occupational therapy practice that promotes physical, cognitive, emotional, and social well-being through structured interactions with horses. Despite growing evidence supporting the therapeutic benefits of equine-assisted interventions, confusion remains regarding the distinctions between hippotherapy and therapeutic riding, highlighting the need for increased education and advocacy within the field. In addition, there is a …

2020-Current year OA Pubs
OBJECTIVE: Autosomal dominant pathogenic variants in WFS1 cause a spectrum of disorders with phenotypic manifestations including low-frequency sensorineural hearing loss, optic nerve atrophy accompanied by low- to mid-frequency sensorineural hearing loss, non-syndromic diabetes mellitus, and early-onset cataracts. These conditions are generally milder than autosomal recessive Wolfram syndrome, except for Hattersley-Urano syndrome. Despite growing recognition of these disorders, data on clinical progression and long-term outcomes remain limited. This study aims to expand knowledge on disease severity and progression in autosomal dominant WFS1-related disorders. APPROACH: Clinical data were obtained from the Washington University International Registry and Clinical Study for Wolfram Syndrome and …

Neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a common birth complication that can cause death or lifelong disabling conditions like cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and autism. It is well established that maternal infection and inflammation are significant risk factors for HIE but reasons for this increase in neurological risk to the offspring remain unknown. Inflammation or infection are associated with epigenetic changes and may contribute to the increased risk of neurodevelopmental disability in exposed offspring. Here, we analyzed and compared DNA methylation patterns in brain monocytes isolated from control, maternal immune activation (MIA), and an inflammation sensitized HIE (IS-HIE) CF-1 mouse model …

BACKGROUND: Cystic hydatid infection is a parasitic disease caused by the larval stages of Echinococcus granulosus, most commonly involving the liver and lungs. Cardiac involvement is rare, accounting for less than 2% of cases, with the left ventricle being the most commonly affected site. Involvement of the right ventricle is extremely uncommon and may lead to life-threatening complications such as tricuspid valve obstruction and hemodynamic compromise.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a rare case of a 42-year-old patient who presented to the emergency department with exertional dyspnea, hemoptysis, chest pain, syncope, peripheral edema, and signs of right-sided heart failure. The patient …

Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) patients harboring residual cancer burden following completion of conventional neoadjuvant chemo-immunotherapy regimens have poor relapse-free and overall survival rates and limited therapeutic options. We and others have demonstrated that mitochondrial function is required for the survival of chemo-refractory TNBC. Here, we define the mitochondrial translation machinery as a critical and targetable dependency underlying chemo-refractory TNBC. Analyses of human and orthotopic patient-derived xenograft (PDX) mass spectrometry proteomics datasets revealed that mitochondrial protein translation-related signatures were among the top associated with chemoresistance. These signatures included core mitoribosome components and the mitoribosome-associated factor Oxidase (Cytochrome C) Assembly 1-Like …

Journal of Appalachian Health
Introduction: Diabetes is a top ten Rural Healthy People 2030 priority for health improvement among rural Americans. Socioeconomic, environmental, geographic and political barriers contribute to the type 2 diabetes (T2D) prevalence and its disparate impact in rural communities. However, promoting proper self-care behaviors via self-management education can help people with diabetes better manage their condition.
Purpose: To account for the social environmental factors that affect rural residents, a tailored diabetes education program was developed, and the program’s effectiveness in improving diabetes knowledge and T2D-related health outcomes was assessed.
Methods: Using data collected from Appalachian Kentucky residents enrolled in a six-week, …
