Background and Aims: PCOS is one of the leading multisystem conditions among women of reproductive age. Dietary changes may help improve outcomes associated with PCOS and its comorbidities. While a lower carbohydrate, moderate protein diet is often recommended, those with PCOS often use temporary diets or dietary supplements instead of or in addition to prescription medications due to dissatisfaction with their treatment options. Additionally, studies examining the usefulness of supplements and their effects on PCOS symptoms are lacking. This study explored the prevalence of use of temporary diets, prescription medications, and dietary supplements among women with PCOS.
Methods: An anonymous …

This project focuses on evaluating nutritional habits of disadvantaged families within San Bernardino County (SBC) by using an evidence-based evaluation tool known as the …
Development Of An Employee Leave Guide Handbook At The California University Of Science And Medicine, Leyal Nidal Fakhreddine
Development Of An Employee Leave Guide Handbook At The California University Of Science And Medicine, Leyal Nidal Fakhreddine
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Employee leave policies play an important role in supporting workforce well-being, organizational compliance, and retention of skilled labor, especially in medical and educational health institutions. However, employees still experience confusion when trying to make sense of complicated leave options such as the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), maternity and paternity leave, and military leave. The lack of clear, centralized guidance can result in delays, miscommunication, and increased workplace stress.
This project was carried out as a part of the Master of Public Health (MPH) program integrative learning experience requirements at California State University, San Bernardino, and was conducted during …
Reducing Hospital Readmissions Through Post-Discharge Follow-Up Programs, Gurjeet Singh
Reducing Hospital Readmissions Through Post-Discharge Follow-Up Programs, Gurjeet Singh
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Within 30 days of the discharge, hospital readmissions continue to be one of the significant problems in healthcare organizations and are commonly seen as the measure of care quality, coordination, and efficiency. The high readmission rates indicate the disconnect between inpatient and outpatient settings, patient education, medication reconciliation, and discharge planning. They also have high financial implications in value-based reimbursement settings. The proposed project will be a descriptive and analytical literature review studying the effects of structured post discharge follow up interventions such as scheduled telephone calls, telehealth visits, and home based outreach on preventing unnecessary hospital readmission and enhancing …
A Pilot Project On Improving Icu Nurses’ Confidence In Early Defibrillation, Adetutu Obadina
A Pilot Project On Improving Icu Nurses’ Confidence In Early Defibrillation, Adetutu Obadina
Doctoral Projects
Early recognition of shockable cardiac rhythms and timely defibrillation are critical components of effective resuscitation during in-hospital cardiac arrest. Despite established guidelines from the American Heart Association (AHA), nurses may experience uncertainty or reduced confidence when identifying shockable rhythms and delivering timely defibrillation during cardiac arrest events. The purpose of this project was to examine whether a structured educational intervention incorporating simulation-based training could improve intensive care unit (ICU) nurses’ confidence and knowledge in recognizing shockable rhythms and performing timely defibrillation. A pre-and post-intervention design was implemented among ICU nurses at a large academic medical center between September and October …
Understanding The Role Of Toxs As A Bile Sensing Component Of The Toxrs Virulence Regulatory System In Vibrio Spp., Minje Kim
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Pathogenic Vibrio bacteria, such as V. cholerae and V. parahaemolyticus, colonize in the human small intestine to cause severe gastrointestinal disease. During the infection, these bacteria encounter bile salts, antimicrobial cholesterol metabolites secreted into the intestine. Pathogenic Vibrio species have evolved to utilize bile salts as signals to regulate virulence. The signaling depends in part on ToxRS, a conserved co-component transmembrane transcription regulator. ToxRS consists of the transcription factor ToxR and its membrane-tethered binding partner ToxS. ToxS is required for ToxR stability and full transcriptional activity. Although bile salts are known to influence ToxRS-dependent virulence gene expression, the molecular …

Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Numerous in vivo studies have demonstrated beta-2-adrenoceptor (β2AR) -agonism as permissive in the development of allergic lung inflammation, and have implicated the arrestin-dependent signaling arm of the β2AR in mediating this effect. However, the specific cell type(s) mediating β2AR regulation of allergic lung inflammation remain unestablished.
METHODS: To explore the potential contribution of airway epithelia in this phenomenon, we compared the ability of ractopamine (RP), recently identified as a Gs-biased beta-agonist, to that of the unbiased/balanced beta-agonist albuterol (ALB), on IL-13-stimulated mucin and cytokine production in human airway epithelia cultures in air-liquid interface (HAE).
RESULTS: ALB, which activates both …
Treatment And Interventions For Sexual Assault In Humanitarian Contexts: Addressing Gaps In Refugee And Idp Camp Care In Myanmar, Erin Nash
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
Sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) remains a pervasive yet under-addressed issue in humanitarian settings. Refugee and internally displaced person (IDP) camps along the Thai– Myanmar border represent a complex nexus of protracted displacement, ethnic conflict, and limited access to medical and psychosocial care. Although the prevalence of sexual assault in these contexts is well-documented, there is a critical gap in the literature regarding effective, context-specific treatment and intervention strategies. This capstone project conducts a comprehensive review of existing research on sexual assault care in humanitarian crises worldwide and assesses its applicability to displaced ethnic minorities from Myanmar. The analysis considers …
Plan To Develop A Theory-Based Diabetes Social Media Campaign For Spanish-Speaking Adults In Finney County, Ks: Integration Of A Promotora, Focused Discussion Groups, And Community Feedback To Ensure Cultural Appropriateness, Julevi P. Bernido
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
The 2025 Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) shows that over 11% of adults in Finney County, Kansas, have diabetes, which surpasses both state and national averages. Census data from 2016-2020 indicate that 42.6% of residents ages five and older speak a language other than English at home, and 36.1% speak Spanish (United States Census Bureau, n.d.). The CHNA further highlights concerns about language and cultural barriers to care, especially among the Spanish-speaking population. Notably, 21.74% of residents have limited English proficiency—much higher than the state’s 12.1% (CHNA, 2025).
This capstone will develop a theory-based social media campaign plan to support …
Gestational Diabetes And Social Determinants Of Health In Black Women, Darianne Greenwood
Gestational Diabetes And Social Determinants Of Health In Black Women, Darianne Greenwood
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) poses significant health risks, specifically increasing the risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes post-delivery, as well as increasing the risk of adverse neonatal and maternal outcomes. Black women, in particular, experience disproportionately higher rates of GDM incidence, severity, and complications in comparison to White women. Biological factors alone do not account for these disparities, necessitating a deeper examination into how systemic factors, particularly the social environment, influence these inequitable health outcomes. The purpose of this comprehensive literature review is to answer the question: “How do the Social Determinants of Health (SDoH), such as residential segregation, food …
A Literature Review Of Estrogen Synthesis And Metabolizing Enzymes Produced By The Human Gut Microbiome And Their Correlation With Cancer, Rebecca Cederberg
A Literature Review Of Estrogen Synthesis And Metabolizing Enzymes Produced By The Human Gut Microbiome And Their Correlation With Cancer, Rebecca Cederberg
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
The link between estrogen and cancer initiation or progression has been well established; such that the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (WHO IARC) has classified several estrogen therapies and estrogenic compounds as group 1 carcinogens. Estrogen and/or its receptors have been associated with reproductive cancers such as breast, ovarian, endometrial, and prostate, as well as lymphomas, lung, and colon cancers. Additionally, elevated levels of estrogen and altered gut microbiomes are also associated with increased rates of breast cancer. More recently, microbial genes that are capable of synthesizing estrogen and deconjugating estrogen metabolites have been identified, and …
Use Of Electroencephalography To Evaluate Neural Correlates Of Attention In The Oddball Paradigm, Folsom J. Berry
Use Of Electroencephalography To Evaluate Neural Correlates Of Attention In The Oddball Paradigm, Folsom J. Berry
Honors Theses
Electroencephalography (EEG) and Event-Related Potentials (ERP) are tools used to study and analyze cognitive processing. EEG measures neuroelectric brain activity from the scalp, while ERPs are time-locked averages that are used to isolate neural responses to stimuli. The P300 (P3) component (positive waveform elicited at 300 milliseconds (ms)) is the primary ERP component. This thesis project had two main objectives. The first objective was to develop conceptual and technical competency in EEG/ERP theory, data acquisition, and processing. The second objective was to implement the visual oddball paradigm through experimental demonstration. This experiment tested the hypothesis that infrequent target stimuli will …
In-Vitro Testing Of Light Wavelength To Detect Clots In Neonatal Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Circuitry, Amanda Holmes
In-Vitro Testing Of Light Wavelength To Detect Clots In Neonatal Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Circuitry, Amanda Holmes
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Background: Neonates requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) are at high risk for thrombotic complications, which contribute substantially to morbidity and mortality. Current circuit surveillance methods rely on intermittent visual inspection and indirect laboratory markers, both of which often detect thrombosis only after clinically significant progression. Optical approaches offer a non-invasive alternative for earlier clot visualization, yet the influence of illumination wavelength on detection performance under realistic ECMO conditions remains incompletely characterized.
Methods: This study evaluated wavelength-dependent clot detection performance in a controlled in-vitro neonatal ECMO circuit model using a portable imaging prototype designed to emulate bedside workflow. Twelve independent ECMO …

Accurate detection and monitoring of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Helicobacter pylori mainly rely on phenotypic methods and culture, which can sometimes fail when bacterial load is low or after recent treatment. We investigated whether gastric biopsies classified as H. pylori-negative by standard diagnostic techniques still contain detectable bacterial DNA, including regions linked to AMR, and assessed whether selected DNA fragments can mediate allelic exchange in vitro. Gastric biopsies from 46 dyspeptic patients in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (including 23 phenotypically positive and 23 phenotypically negative individuals) were analyzed using long-read amplicon sequencing of seven resistance-associated loci, selective whole-genome …

School of Medicine Student Publications and Presentations
Background: Reversal of neuromuscular blockade by popular non-depolarizing muscle relaxants is a critical component of routine, safe anesthetic practice. Sugammadex, a modified gamma-cyclodextrin, has largely replaced acetylcholinesterase inhibitors and is recommended as the primary reversal agent by the American Society of Anesthesiologists. However, sugammadex is commonly supplied in 200 mg single-use vials, which may result in drug waste when smaller doses are required. This quality improvement project evaluated whether the introduction of 50 mg prefilled syringes at our facility could reduce drug waste and overall cost.
Methods: Following implementation of 50 mg syringes, a retrospective chart review was conducted over …

Purpose: Growth modulation is an established technique for limb deformity correction and is increasingly applied to spinal deformities. While distraction-based posterior and anterior compressive methods have been explored, spinal growth modulation through fixation across vertebral growth centers remains unstudied. We hypothesized that unilateral trans-endplate screws-spinal epiphysiodesis trajectory (SET) screws-could induce partial anterior growth arrest and promote scoliotic deformity in a porcine model.
Methods: Four male piglets (two experimental, two control) underwent unilateral posterior spinal instrumentation at four lower thoracic levels at eight weeks of age. Experimental animals received trans-endplate SET screws; controls received pedicle screws. Radiographs obtained three months postoperatively …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Phase-change nanodroplets (PCNDs) continue to generate significant research interest due to their potential to extravasate into tissue, to be targeted for molecular imaging and drug delivery, and to undergo an induced phase-change to "activated" microbubbles (MBs) for ultrasound (US) imaging. To accurately quantify molecular markers, however, one assumes a consistent proportion of PCNDs in a region of interest (ROI) are stably activated and imaged. Herein we present a framework for developing a diagnostic sequence that is optimized for PCND activation uniformity, contrast, and acquisition time. To develop this framework, activation was examined at three scales of increasing complexity: single, adjacent, …

Objectives: Unwarranted clinical variation (UCV), defined as care provided to a patient that is not proportional to the patient's needs, clinical characteristics, or preferences, results in negative patient outcomes. UCV detection is performed to compare healthcare outcomes across regions or organizations and reduce UCV incidences. However, the lack of standardized UCV concepts and the local context factors hinder the interoperability of UCV analyses between organizations. Currently, UCV analysis relies on centralized analysis, posing challenges due to the proprietary nature of an organization's healthcare and operational data. Standardizing analysis factors enables interoperable analyses by establishing a common context between organizations. This …

Purpose: Radiation therapy (RT) has emerged as an effective local therapy option for patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and is associated with improved overall survival (OS). However, some patients still have poor outcomes after RT, and biomarkers are needed to stratify prognostic groups. High circulating growth hormone (GH) levels promote HCC proliferation and survival and are associated with aggressive disease. In this study, we evaluated whether pretreatment GH levels are associated with OS and progression-free survival (PFS) in patients who underwent RT for unresectable HCC.
Methods and materials: Patients undergoing RT for HCC during 2017-2023 were identified from a …

Internal Medicine, East Africa
Understanding trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) requires a contextual perspective that considers historical legacies, social environments, and cultural realities. This paper draws on empirical evidence from Kenya and Uganda to demonstrate the limitations of applying trauma frameworks developed in high-income countries to African contexts. Findings from the Orphaned and Separated Children’s Assessment Related to Their Health and Well-Being (OSCAR) study challenge assumptions about care environments.
