The Effect Of Varying Skin Temperature On Sensory Nerve Conductive Velocity, Andrew W. L. Kuo Dec 1973

The Effect Of Varying Skin Temperature On Sensory Nerve Conductive Velocity, Andrew W. L. Kuo

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Effects Of Semantic Associational Strength And Verbal Sequence Length On The Auditory Comprehension Of Aphasic Adults, Laurel J. Brown Nov 1973

Effects Of Semantic Associational Strength And Verbal Sequence Length On The Auditory Comprehension Of Aphasic Adults, Laurel J. Brown

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of semantic associational strength (SAS) upon adult aphasics' auditory comprehension abilities. Twenty-eight adult aphasics (25 males and 3 females) and 12 normal control subjects were presented three experimental tasks, each containing 45 items. Experimental task 1 contained single word picture sets of high SAS, moderate SAS, and low SAS words. Experimental task 2 contained two word picture sets of high, moderate, and low SAS words, and experimental task 3 contained three word picture sets of high, moderate, and low SAS words. Subjects heard one, two, and three word verbal sequences …

A Study Of Water-Soluble Inhibitory Compounds (Algicides) Produced By Fresh-Water Algae, Denny O. Harris, Manhar C. Parekh Nov 1973

A Study Of Water-Soluble Inhibitory Compounds (Algicides) Produced By Fresh-Water Algae, Denny O. Harris, Manhar C. Parekh

KWRRI Research Reports

A complex system of growth inhibitors was observed in the green algae (Volvocaceae). Inhibitors were found in the culture filtrates of some genera which limit their own growth (autoinhibitors) while others in the family produce substances which check the growth of other genera (heteroinhibitors). These inhibitors were destroyed by autoclaving. It was decided that Pandorina morum, which produced the strongest inhibitor and Volvox tertius, the most sensitive to the inhibitor would make an excellent model system for a study of the chemical and physical properties of these naturally occurring algicides. The algicide could be removed from actively growing cultures about …

A Study Of Variability In Locating The External Reference Point For Central Venous Pressure Determination, Joyce Johnson Drake Nov 1973

A Study Of Variability In Locating The External Reference Point For Central Venous Pressure Determination, Joyce Johnson Drake

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This exploratory study was conducted to determine the variability occurring among intensive care nurses in locating, with two methods, the external reference point for central venous pressure (CVP) determinations. In the literature on CVP and on CVP value discrepancies, no reports were found of studies related to variability among medical personnel in locating the point.

The nurse participants in this study were thirty-one intensive care nurses who routinely were involved in CVP monitoring and marking reference points on patients in two surgical intensive care units. Thirty-two volunteer, non-hospitalized subjects, ages 18-85, sixteen males and sixteen females, with varying body builds …

The Effects Of Atropine On The Growth And Respiration Of Two Species Of Bacteria Normally Inhabiting The Human Gastro-Intestinal System, Mary M. Ramos Oct 1973

The Effects Of Atropine On The Growth And Respiration Of Two Species Of Bacteria Normally Inhabiting The Human Gastro-Intestinal System, Mary M. Ramos

Theses & Dissertations

It is the purpose of this study to determine whether the drug atropine has an effect on bacteria found normally inhabiting the human body, most specifically the gastrointestinal system. Atropine is one of the oldest drugs in medicine. It is derived from the roots and leaves of solanaceous plants such as henbane and Jimson weed. Atropine is often termed a belladonna alkaloid because it can also be found in the deadly nightshade plant, Atropa belladonna. Atropine is a highly competitive antagonist of acetylcholine at receptor sites in smooth muscles, cardiac muscle, and various glandular cells (5). Therefore, its effects are …
