Advances In The Management And Surgical Treatment Of Intracranial Aneurysms, Thoralf M. Sundt Jr. Jan 1974

Advances In The Management And Surgical Treatment Of Intracranial Aneurysms, Thoralf M. Sundt Jr.

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Patients who have sustained a spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage are victims of a very serious illness. Not only are they subject at all times to the potentially catastrophic results of a recurrent bleed, but they are faced with the manifestations of the irritative effects of blood in the subarachnoid space where the blood may function as a poison to the vessel wall. These acutely ill individuals may suffer a composite of secondary effects from a bleed which may include a communicating hydrocephalus, cerebral edema (ischemic or chemically induced), sterile meningitis, inappropriate ADH syndrome (osmotic effects of blood in the cerebrospinal fluid), …

Advances In The Management Fo Patients With Malignant Brain Tumors, Charles B. Wilson Jan 1974

Advances In The Management Fo Patients With Malignant Brain Tumors, Charles B. Wilson

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In describing what is new in the management of malignant brain tumors, I shall confine myself largely to chemotherapy and shall outline what we think is important based on our own experience, what we have achieved with single and multiple agents, and where we are going. We have just reviewed our five-year experience and find that chemotherapy, perhaps, is the only thing that is new.

Validation Of The Oregon School Entrance Speech Screening Test, Patricia Ann Hamilton

Dissertations and Theses

This study was designed to validate a speech screening device entitled the Oregon School Entrance Speech Screening Test. The OSESST was developed to identify quickly those children entering first grade who are in need of speech and language intervention. The present study sought to determine what proportion of children with speech and language disorders was not detected by the screening test and what proportion of children without speech and language disorders failed the OSESSI. In addition, this study undertook to determine whether results of this investigation are consistent with those obtained on the OSESST in areas of articulation, syntax, language …

Frequency Responses Of Hearing Aids And Their Effects On The Speech Perception Of Eight Hard-Of-Hearing Subjects, David Pedro Pascoe Jan 1974

Frequency Responses Of Hearing Aids And Their Effects On The Speech Perception Of Eight Hard-Of-Hearing Subjects, David Pedro Pascoe

Independent Studies and Capstones

This dissertation examines the relationship between frequency response and word-discrimination performance of hearing-impaired persons. Three questions are addressed: does the restoration of the normal field-to-eardrum transfer function improve word discrimination; is the restoration of the normal shape of the audibility curve (uniform hearing level at all frequencies) beneficial to hearing-impaired listeners; and can speech discrimination be improved by an extension of the present narrow-band response in hearing aids.

Ua35/11 Student Honors Research Bulletin, Vol. Ii, Wku Honors Program

WKU Administration Documents

Articles written by honors program students. They were originally research projects, class papers or essays written for academic credit, but in each case the student has done further work editing and improving his or her manuscript for this publication. The articles represent a broad range of interests and disciplines, and they indicate a healthy attempt on the part of at least some students to dig for deeper knowledge and understanding than is usually associated with undergraduate study.

Influence Of Ethanol On Glucose Tolerance, Insulin Secretion And Glucagon Secretion In Man, James Mcmonagle Jan 1974

Influence Of Ethanol On Glucose Tolerance, Insulin Secretion And Glucagon Secretion In Man, James Mcmonagle

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

[From the Introduction] In response to the widespread consumption of ethanol and the medical problems related to its abuse, the world literature on ethanol metabolism has become voluminous. The interaction between the metabolism of ethanol and intermediary metabolism of carbohydrates has been amply elucidated. One particular very important aspect of this ethanol-carbohydrate interaction which has only recently begun to be investigated is the effect of ethanol on glucose tolerance. The preliminary studies concerning the effects of ethanol on glucose tolerance have provided both exciting findings and unanswered questions. This dissertation, examining the effects of ethanol on glucose tolerance and insulin …

Still's Disease In Adults, William M. Edwards, Stephen R. Koller, Michael J. Miller Jan 1974

Still's Disease In Adults, William M. Edwards, Stephen R. Koller, Michael J. Miller

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In 1897, Dr. George F. Still described 22 children with a form of chronic joint disease which differed from rheumatic fever. Twelve of these children had a syndrome characterized by glandular and splenic enlargement which, with a characteristic fever pattern, rash, and arthritis, has become known as Still's disease. Subsequent investigators have described patients over age 16 presenting with similar signs and symptoms suggesting that this syndrome is not specific for children. We recently studied a patient in whom the diagnosis of adult onset Still's disease was made.

Clinical Advances In The Evaluation Of Deep Coma, Cary Suter Jan 1974

Clinical Advances In The Evaluation Of Deep Coma, Cary Suter

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Today, 1974, in large medical centers, evaluation of the patient in coma is almost a daily necessity, and the need to evaluate the patient in deep coma arises once or twice every week. Even in smaller hospitals the problem is not uncommon. This has come about because many laymen and most medical personnel are now well trained in methods of cardiorespiratory resuscitation. Persons are not allowed to die easily and once resuscitated, are moved to intensive care units where life is maintained. Fortunately, if they do not die of their underlying disease, such as trauma or myocardial infarction, many patients …

We are going to see how we can apply some of this information clinically.
