The Effect Of Pre-Exposure To Sucrose On The Acquisition And Extinction Of A Conditioned Aversion, Shirlee Fenwick Apr 1974

The Effect Of Pre-Exposure To Sucrose On The Acquisition And Extinction Of A Conditioned Aversion, Shirlee Fenwick

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Twenty-eight female, water deprived rats were given 5 minutes access to sucrose for either 1,7,14, or 21 days. They were then given LiC1 injections every third day until an aversion to the sucrose developed. The results indicated that as amount of pre-exposure to sucrose increased, the number of illnesses required to develop an aversion increased. Also, the rate of extinction of the conditioned aversion was inversely related to the number of exposures required. to establish the aversion.

Interstitial Cystitis, Edward O. Janosko Ii Mar 1974

Interstitial Cystitis, Edward O. Janosko Ii

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

[From the Introduction] There is only one report of an attempt to induce interstitial cystitis in animals by immunologic methods. Silk in 1970 was unable to produce any lesions in rats or rabbits following a single intramuscular injection of homologous bladder antigen (5 mgm) in complete Freund's adjuvant. This amount of crude antigen is small compared to doses of 200-400 mg which have been successfully used to produce lesions in other organs. Multiple injections of antigen will sometimes produce a lesion when single injections of antigen are unsuccessful. Heterologous antigens, moreover, are occasionally more effective than homologous antigen in producing …

The Effect Of Salicylate And Chloroquine On Prostaglandin-Induced Articular Damage In The Rabbit Knee, Carol Teitz Mar 1974

The Effect Of Salicylate And Chloroquine On Prostaglandin-Induced Articular Damage In The Rabbit Knee, Carol Teitz

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

[From the Discussion] In summary, we have shown that prostaglandin E1, when injected in the rabbit knee produces synovitis and cartilage matrix degradation. The finding that salicylate cannot prevent this degeneration whereas chloroquine can., is most likely due to their different mechanisms of action in this system. Whereas chloroquine's ability to stabilize membranes is protective int his experiment, salicylate's ability to prevent the biosynthesis of prostaglandins is by passed and therefore is not.

Masking Patterns Of High Frequency Pure Tones, Judith Eide Widen Mar 1974

Masking Patterns Of High Frequency Pure Tones, Judith Eide Widen

Dissertations and Theses

Previous investigations of masking have established that the action of the masking tone spreads upward in frequency, creating significantly more masking (threshold shift) above the masker frequency than below. It was the purpose of this study to investigate the masking pattern produced by high frequency pure tones, heretofore uninvestigated.

Masking patterns were obtained for nine normal hearing young adults utilizing the method of adjustment. The masking produced by an 11000 Hz pure tone of 40 dB sensation level was measured at three frequencies above and three frequencies below the masker frequency. Analysis of the data revealed a downward spread of …

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

This study is a worldwide taxonomic treatment utilizing endomorphic characters such as cytology, histology, and embryology, in addition to the traditional exomorphic features. New chromosome numbers and histological information are reported. Relationships between Chloris and other genera in the Chlorideae are discussed. A total of 56 species is recognized in the genus; each is described and illustrated. Complete synonymies are included as well as a list of unidentified or rejected names. Distributions and maps are given for each species, along with lists of specimens examined during studies at various herbaria. Reports of field studies involving introgression among certain species are …

Granular Cell Myoblastoma Of The Larynx, Kamil Muzaffar, Iftikhar Salahuddin, Fred Averbuch, Richard D. Nichols

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Granuloma cell myoblastoma ofthe larynx is a relatively uncommon tumor. A review of the literature reveals only 52 cases reported. The lesion is a benign growth which is often asymptomatic, though most commonly associated with hoarseness. The treatment of choice is local surgical excision. Four successfully treated cases are reported. All four patients are Negro — three females and one male.

Phenotypic Males With 46, Xx Karyotype: Report Of Two New Cases, G. R. Rubio, Lester Weiss, J. F. Nunez, M. Saeed Uz Zafar

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Two sex chromatin positive phenotypic males were found to have 46, XX karyotypes. Both had small testes and elevated gonadotropins with low testosterone levels. Semen analysis could not be obtained but one man claimed to have a daughter. In one patient, mosaicism was suggested by the finding in a single cell of a chromosome morphologically resembling a Y. A second cell line was not found in the other patient. Possible explanations for the development of a male phenotype in the absence of demonstrable Y chromosome include the existence of two cell lines or mosaicism, an autosomal sex determining gene and …

Removal Of An Intra-Abdominal French Catheter Through The Laparoscope, Asghar Afsari Mar 1974

Removal Of An Intra-Abdominal French Catheter Through The Laparoscope, Asghar Afsari

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Use of refined instruments for the removal of an intra-abdominal foreign body has enhanced the indication for operative laparoscopy. In particular instances, laparoscopy has proven more advantageous than laparotomy. This case report illustrates removal of an intra-abdominal rubber catheter via a laparoscopic procedure with a double puncture technique.

Correction Of D-Loop, D-Transposition Of The Great Arteries And Sub-Pulmonary Stenosis With A Dacron Conduit And Stented Porcine Xenograft Valve, Lorenzo Gonzalez-Lavin, Gordon M. Folger Mar 1974

Correction Of D-Loop, D-Transposition Of The Great Arteries And Sub-Pulmonary Stenosis With A Dacron Conduit And Stented Porcine Xenograft Valve, Lorenzo Gonzalez-Lavin, Gordon M. Folger

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Total correction of transposition of the great arteries and left ventricular outflow tract obstruction has become feasible in recent years. Certain modifications are needed, however, to improve the long term function of the valved conduit required in the procedure. A stented porcine xenograft valve, sutured into a woven Dacron tubular graft, was used successfully in the total correction of such a malfunction. The patient described is the first so treated at the Henry Ford Hospital. The main advantage of this technique is its practicality. Both Dacron tubular grafts and stented porcine xenograft valves are commercially available. This approach is applicable …

Position-Dependent Pleural Friction Rub, Thomas L. Connolly Mar 1974

Position-Dependent Pleural Friction Rub, Thomas L. Connolly

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

The art of physical examination is often forgotten by clinicians in their haste to depend on laboratory tests. This paper described a helpful way to diagnose pleurisy in someone who should have it according to the history. Auscultation of the chest in the supine and lateral decubitus positions will occasionally facilitate the detection of a pleural friction rub when conventional examinations may not do so. Two patients are described in whom this method was used.

Greenhouse Fungicide — Environmental Carcinogen?, Marvin D. Anderson, Herbert S. Rosenkranz Mar 1974

Greenhouse Fungicide — Environmental Carcinogen?, Marvin D. Anderson, Herbert S. Rosenkranz

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

A simple screening method, in which a bacterial mutant deficient in its ability to repair DNA, was used to detect genetic damage from a widely-used fungicide. The finding strengthens the suspicion that it may be a potent human carcinogen. The unique role of the physician in eliciting a history of exposure from a patient with cancer is emphasized in the case report.
