Vagotomy With Pyloroplasty Or Antrectomy: A Comparison Of Results In The Treatment Of Duodenal Ulcer, Richard L. Collier, John H. Wylie Jr. Sep 1974

Vagotomy With Pyloroplasty Or Antrectomy: A Comparison Of Results In The Treatment Of Duodenal Ulcer, Richard L. Collier, John H. Wylie Jr.

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

During the years 1970-73, 776 operations were performed for the relief of duodenal ulcer. Truncal vagotomy was done in all cases, and to this was added antrectomy in 92 cases and pyloroplasty in 24 cases. In the followup, three-fourths of the patients in both groups said they were satisfied with the result. There were four recurrences in the smaller pyloroplasty group. In this series, antrectomy with vagotomy appears to be the best operation for duodenal ulcer disease.

Diffuse Lymphoma Of Small Intestine And Colon: Case Report With Discussion, S. A. Swenson Jr., James L. Omel

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

A case is reported of malignant lymphoma of the small and large bowel associated with ulcerative colitis. Primary lymphoma of the gastrointestinal tract is relatively uncommon. The dual association with colitis is rare. Prior to laparotomy, diagnosis of lymphoma is difficult because, of the many possible presenting complaints, none are specific. Treatment is basically surgical excision with postoperative radiation.

The Management Of Small Carcinomas Of The Rectum And Distal Sigmoid Colon, M. A. Block Sep 1974

The Management Of Small Carcinomas Of The Rectum And Distal Sigmoid Colon, M. A. Block

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Of 23 patients with carcinomas less than two centimeters in diameter located in the rectum and distal sigmoid colon, evidence of invasion was present in seven. Resections were performed for six patients, with two eventually dying from the carcinoma. Individualized management should consider the presence or absence of invasive carcinoma, appropriate resection for invasive carcinoma, biopsy of the base of the lesion if feasible when observation is planned, repeated sigmoidoscopic examinations for noninvasive carcinoma, and later resection if recurrence with invasion develops. Although approximately half of the carcinomas were associated with villous tumors, this factor was not significant in the …

Metabolic Capabilities Of Sulfur Oxidizing Bacteria And Their Role In Water Pollution, M. I. H. Aleem Sep 1974

Metabolic Capabilities Of Sulfur Oxidizing Bacteria And Their Role In Water Pollution, M. I. H. Aleem

KWRRI Research Reports

This report describes investigations into the physiology of microorganisms that are commonly involved in the oxidation of inorganic sulfur compounds. The metabolic activities of these bacteria play a potent role in several fields of economic importance such as strip mining operations, water pollution, corrosion, metallurgy, petroleum technology and soil fertility processes.

The oxidation of inorganic sulfur compounds was studied in the chemolithotrophs Thiobacillus denitrificans, Thiobacillus A2, Thiobacillus neapolitanus, and a photolithotroph Rhodopseudomonas palustris. Cell suspensions from all of the thiobacilli catalyzed completely the oxidation of sulfide, thiosulfate, and sulfite to sulfate. The oxidation of thiosulfate in R. palustris …

Among 143 women whose menarcheal age was documented during a longitudinal growth study, recall 39 years after the even gave the following results: menarche was recalled as 0.2 years after earlier than the actual date (p<0.05), the standard deviation of recalled age was 0.3 years larger (p<0.01), and the coefficient of correlation, r, between actual and recalled age was 0.60 +/- s.e. 0.05.

Suicide -- Causation, Indicators And Interventions, Florence W. Kaslow Sep 1974

Suicide -- Causation, Indicators And Interventions, Florence W. Kaslow

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Excerpt from the full-text article:

In this paper an attempt is made to determine what factors propel given individuals toward self destruction. Durkheim's typology of suicides is utilized and an analysis of the social and psychological components of each type undertaken. The social structure is viewed from the vantage point of how it influences and is internalized by members of society. The psychological aspects are handled by looking into what intrapsychic and external forces shape the individual's personality and behavior in such a way that he seeks his own death. In some instances it is hard to draw a sharp …

Prenatal Instruction Of Breast Feeding Mothers, Anita Berry Sep 1974

Prenatal Instruction Of Breast Feeding Mothers, Anita Berry

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This experimental study tested the effect of prenatal instruction on the success of a group of mothers who desired to breast feed their infants. It was hypothesized that mothers receiving information on how to nurse their infants, how to prevent complications and how to cope with common problems of breast feeding would have a higher success rate than those not so instructed.

Criteria for success was that the mothers would have an adequate supply of milk to meet the nutritional demands of their infant without supplementation, would have fewer and less severe complications, and would express a higher degree of …

  3. Do mothers like their husbands to be included in the discussion?
  4. When do mothers prefer to receive information regarding sexual relationships following delivery?

The questionnaire was mailed to fifty primipara mothers between three and four weeks after delivery. Mothers with pronounced anemia, heart and lung …

Exploration Of The Incidence Of Identified Emotional Disorders In Selected General Hospitals Of Nebraska, Arlene M. Van Horn Sep 1974

Exploration Of The Incidence Of Identified Emotional Disorders In Selected General Hospitals Of Nebraska, Arlene M. Van Horn

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A descriptive-comparative survey using content analysis of medical records has been done to determine the frequency with which emotional disorders are identified by medical personnel in the population hospitalized in small general hospitals in north-central Nebraska.

A systematic, random sample of medical records was taken from two hospitals arbitrarily included in the study on the basis of bed capacity and distance from mental health facilities.

Each medical record that was reviewed has been placed in a category based on whether an emotional disorder was identified in it by the medical personnel, or whether it contained recorded behaviors that could indicate …

Programmed Articulation Therapy Administered By Supportive Personnel, Leona B. Smook

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Using the principles of programmed instruction, a motor skill program was designed to instruct a nonprofessional how to teach a child to make a speech sound, specifically the phoneme /th/ (voiceless) in isolation.

A cognitive program describing the speech mechanism and act was also developed to be used in conjunction with the motor skill program.

These programs were pretested, then tested using 15 nursing attendants (aides) as subjects. Their presentation was compared to methods used by professionally trained clinicians. Three fully trained and qualified judges rated the performance of both groups. Analysis of the ratings showed that the performance of …

The Development Of A Means Of Applying Extraoral Pressure To The Buccal Arch Positioner, David C. Hobson Aug 1974

The Development Of A Means Of Applying Extraoral Pressure To The Buccal Arch Positioner, David C. Hobson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A problem common to all of the full-banded orthodontic techniques currently in use is the delivery of an optimum force to each tooth without disrupting the forces on other teeth. This problem becomes especially acute during finishing. It arises out of Newton's third law, which states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Thus, in full-banded techniques, a force on one tooth gives rise to generally undesirable reactive forces on other teeth in its vicinity.

The theory behind the buccal arch positioner (BAP) is dissipation of the force on any one tooth over every other tooth …
