Clinical Significance Of Liver Enzyme Biomarkers In Chronic Statin Users, Muayad Khaleel Ibrahim, Saad Mahmoud Saeed
Clinical Significance Of Liver Enzyme Biomarkers In Chronic Statin Users, Muayad Khaleel Ibrahim, Saad Mahmoud Saeed
Al-Esraa University College Journal for Medical Sciences
It is possible that statins, by their dual capacity to modulate (both stimulate and suppress) immune responses, could play a role in influencing the course of autoimmune diseases. Consequently, our investigation was designed to explore how statins impact both the innate and adaptive branches of the immune system, as well as their effect on the crucial mechanism of self-tolerance. This was achieved through the comprehensive measurement of various antibody profiles, specifically including the detection and quantification of autoantibodies, such as antinuclear antibodies and Creatinine kinase, Aldolase, HMGCR antibody, Albumin and Bilirubin and Alanine transaminase, Aspartate aminotransferase, Our investigation employed a …

Tumor–Immune Dynamics With Memory And Time Delay: A Fractional-Order Model With Ctla-4 Regulation, Mutaz Mohammad, Mohyeedden Sweidan, Alexander Trounev, Fathalla Rihan
Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Simulation with Applications
This study develops a fractional-order tumor-immune interaction model incorporating Caputo memory effects, delayed immune activation, and CTLA-4 checkpoint regulation. The model describes the coupled dynamics of tumor cells, CD4$^{+}$ T cells, IFN-$\gamma$, and CTLA-4, and extends classical integer-order tumor-immune models by accounting for hereditary immune responses and biologically motivated latency effects. Theoretical properties, including positivity, boundedness, equilibrium structure, and fractional-order stability, are examined to establish the biological and mathematical consistency of the model. The delayed fractional system is then investigated computationally by comparing several numerical methods, including finite difference discretization, Daubechies wavelet collocation, Euler wavelet collocation, and a predictor-corrector scheme. …

Over a decade of advances in Clustered Regularly Interspersed Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR) and CRISPR-associated protein 9 (Cas9)-based technologies have culminated in the first-ever FDA-approved CRISPR/Cas-based therapy. Aside from this approved therapy for sickle cell anemia, several CRISPR/Cas-based therapies are currently under development or testing for a range of chronic diseases, including viral diseases like human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection, genetic diseases like familial hypercholesterolemia, and cancer. The success of these therapies hinges on the effective delivery of CRISPR/Cas9 components to target regions, efficient Cas endonuclease editing, repair profiles generated, and their resulting outcomes. Here, we discuss the …

Background: Graves' disease is an autoimmune disorder that affects the thyroid gland, a small butterfly-shaped organ located in the anterior of the neck. In this case, the immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid, leading to the overproduction of thyroid hormones. The most common result of Graves' disease is an overactive thyroid gland, which produces an excess of thyroid hormones (thyroxine or T4 and triiodothyronine or T3). This can lead to symptoms such as weight loss, rapid heartbeat, anxiety, irritability, heat intolerance, and increased sweating. The thyroid gland may become enlarged, causing a noticeable swelling in the front of the neck. …

The complement system is a central component of innate immunity that coordinates host defense, immune surveillance, and inflammatory responses through tightly regulated proteolytic cascades. Genetic variation within complement genes contributes substantially to interindividual differences in complement activity and disease susceptibility. While coding variants directly alter complement protein structure and function, the microRNA (miRNA)-mediated control and post-transcriptional regulation is not fully understood in shaping complement gene expression across immune and inflammatory mechanisms. Complement pathway genes exhibit extensive and heterogeneous 3'-untranslated regions (3'UTRs), which serve as primary platforms for miRNA binding and RNA-binding protein interactions. Both common and rare single-nucleotide polymorphisms within …

Women do not always have the same opportunities as men, particularly in cultures where more traditional gender norms are embraced. Male allyship can positively impact women’s lives by increasing opportunities (e.g., safety, education attainment, career development, financial security). In addition, understanding and embracing gender differences can optimize women’s participation and leadership contributions. By intentionally removing barriers and encouraging full participation, women’s talents and perspectives can be leveraged. This both expands opportunities for women and enhances innovation, improves decision-making, and contributes to stronger communities.

Every year, over 700,000 people, particularly children under five, die from vector-borne diseases worldwide. Effectively controlling endemics and preventing new outbreaks requires an integrated approach that can lead to the elimination of both vectors and diseases. In the last two decades, integrating medical interventions and vector control has significantly reduced the incidence of Gambian Human African Trypanosomiasis (g-HAT), with the World Health Organization validating eight countries as having eliminated the disease as a public health problem. However, elimination of the tsetse vector has not been confirmed, leaving the possibility of re-emergence. We developed a six-step modeling framework to assess vector …

Photoaging caused by chronic sun exposure exhibits characteristics similar to intrinsic aging, including skin thinning, moisture loss, roughness, collagen degradation, and wrinkle formation. This process is driven by oxidative stress and the formation of malondialdehyde (MDA) as a result of lipid peroxidation. Topical intervention using antioxidant-based moisturizers could prevent further damage. Robusta coffee (Coffea canephora), high levels of chlorogenic acid and caffeine, is known for its antioxidant properties. When fermented with a Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast (SCOBY) to produce kombucha coffee, its bioactive compounds are enhanced, potentially offering additional protection against oxidative stress and photoaging. This …

Ovarian epithelial cancer is an ovarian malignancy with the highest mortality rate in gynecologic oncology. Its incidence increases after the age of 50 and is associated with various risk factors. Carcinogenesis is driven by factors such as incessant ovulation, gonadotropin stimulation, and postmenopausal hormonal fluctuations. These factors cause DNA damage in ovarian epithelial cells through specific molecular pathways, resulting in diverse histopathological types and subtypes. Furthermore, the disease's progression and staging are significantly impacted by its pathways of spread via blood vessels and lymphatics known as LVI (Lymphovascular Invasion). This study employed a comparative observational analytical design with a cross-sectional …

Diarrhea is one of the leading causes of morbidity among children under five in Indonesia and remains a major public health concern, particularly in the province East Java, which has the second-highest disease burden in the country. Unfortunately, evidence for provincial-level predictors of childhood diarrhea using recent national data is limited. This study aimed to estimate the burden of diarrhea among children under five and identify its associated factors to support targeted child health interventions. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted utilizing data from the 2024 Indonesian Nutrition Status Survey (SSGI). Data on children under five residing in East Java with …

Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a major cause of chronic pain and disability, and although NSAIDs are widely used, prolonged therapy may increase the risk of adverse effects. Laser acupuncture has been proposed as a non-invasive option to reduce pain and improve knee-related outcomes. This randomized controlled trial compared laser acupuncture and NSAID therapy in 32 patients with knee OA (Kellgren–Lawrence grade II–III) who were randomized equally to laser acupuncture (n = 16) or NSAIDs (n = 16). The authors assessed pain using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Meanwhile, we evaluated knee function and knee-related quality of life using the Knee …

Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) is an aggressive hematologic malignancy marked by uncontrolled expansion of immature myeloid cells and disruption of normal hematopoiesis. Beyond genetic abnormalities, accumulating evidence demonstrates that leukemic progression is strongly shaped by intercellular communication within the bone marrow niche. Extracellular vesicles (EVs), including exosomes and microvesicles, have emerged as key mediators of this communication, transporting bioactive molecules that influence leukemic cell behavior, immune responses, and treatment sensitivity. This systematic review synthesizes current findings on EVs in adult AML, focusing on their biogenesis, molecular cargo, roles in disease pathogenesis, diagnostic and prognostic relevance, and therapeutic potential. Following PRISMA …

Female sexual dysfunction (FSD) is a common condition that impairs women's quality of life and is frequently associated with obesity. Beyond hormonal and vascular mechanisms, chronic low-grade inflammation, particularly elevated interleukin-6 (IL-6), has been proposed as a biological mediator of this association. This systematic review, registered in PROSPERO (CRD420251046082), aimed to evaluate the role of IL-6 in mediating the association between obesity and FSD. A comprehensive search of PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science was conducted for studies published between 2018 and 2025, focusing on obese women, quantitative IL-6 measurements, and validated assessments of sexual function such as the …

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) remains a major public health issue, particularly among men who have sex with men (MSM), who are estimated to have more than 20-fold higher risk of HIV infection than the general population. In Indonesia, MSM are disproportionately affected, with surveillance data showing steady annual increases. In Jember Regency, East Java, HIV cases have risen over the past decade, with MSM contributing significantly to new diagnoses. Despite available therapy and prevention programs, transmission persists, suggesting geographic and social factors play a role. Spatio-temporal analysis using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial statistics such as Moran's I and …
