Moral Aspects Of Sterility Tests And Artificial Insemination, Gerald Kelly Jan 1949

Moral Aspects Of Sterility Tests And Artificial Insemination, Gerald Kelly

The Linacre Quarterly

The purpose of this article is to outline briefly the present status in moral theology of the various procedures pertinent to sterility testing and artificial insemination. Both subjects are complicated. To simplify the matter as much as possible, I shall use the outline form and shall include the absolute minimum of discussion. Physicians interested in longer explanations will find these in the sources referred to at the end of the article.

The Chemical State Of The Calcium Reacting In The Coagulation Of Blood, Armand J. Quick, Mario Stefanini Nov 1948

The Chemical State Of The Calcium Reacting In The Coagulation Of Blood, Armand J. Quick, Mario Stefanini

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

1. The widely accepted theory that calcium participates in the coagulation mechanism in the form of Ca++ and acts as a catalyst is not in accord with several important experimental findings:

(a) The anticoagulant action of sodium oxalate is much slower than the precipitation of ionized calcium as the oxalate salt.

(b) Sodium citrate begins to depress prothrombin activity at a concentration at which ionized calcium is still present. The inability of tricalcium phosphate to adsorb prothrombin from citrated plasma indicates that citrate forms a complex with prothrombin and it is postulated that prothrombin is …

An Electrophoretic Determinatin Of The Properties Of Methacrol M.E. By The Use Of A Capillary Cross-Arm "U" Tube, Richard Reiland Bains

Bachelors’ Theses

this research was undertaken primarily to discover the use of a capillary cross-arm "U" tube in the determination of the electrophoretic and other electrical proper ties of a plastic emulsion.

The primary objective was to determine the isoelectric point of the emulsion and also the optimum pH or electro-endosmotic motion.

The secondary and distant objective was to note when, how, and it any coherent plating on the electrodes took place.

Some Studies Of The Cytology Of Cancer, Arthur O. Christiansen Jun 1938

Some Studies Of The Cytology Of Cancer, Arthur O. Christiansen

Bachelors’ Theses

The microscopy of the malignant cell has received the attention of large numbers of investigators, who have sought some definite morphological criterion of malignancy. The early literature of cancer research contains descriptions of abnormal cell structures and cytological processes which have been regarded as distinctive of cancerous growth. Subsequent investigations, however, have failed to establish any precise cytological diagnostic characteristic of cancer. The cells of new growths however, present a wide range of pathological variations. of particular interest from the point of view of cellular pathology, by which in some oases have been erroneously interpreted, and have consequently led to …

A Study Of The Wahl Peptase Method, Francis C. Cretsinger Jul 1937

A Study Of The Wahl Peptase Method, Francis C. Cretsinger

Bachelors’ Theses

An interest was first aroused in this problem by Mr. Lawrence Ehrnst of the Froedtert Malting Company who has been interested for some time in devising a method for determining the peptic power of malt. Through the cooperation of Dr. J. R. Koch, the author's major professor, a study of the Wahl Peptase Test was made possible.

Anyone who attempts the study of enzymes is confronted with the various factors inhibiting enzyme action. Also, the seemingly contradictory results of different investigators is somewhat confusing. This may be attributed to the difficulty of repeating identical experimental conditions, for enzymes are very …

Preparation Of A Clear, Light Pharmaceutical Solution Of Sodium Morrhuate, George H. Becker Jun 1937

Preparation Of A Clear, Light Pharmaceutical Solution Of Sodium Morrhuate, George H. Becker

Bachelors’ Theses

Treatment of varicose veins by the injection method has resulted in diminution of prolonged suffering by many patients. The ideal solution is one that ill cause no sloughing of the tissues immediately surrounding the vein; nontoxic in the amounts used; effective; not too painful and not capable of reducing drug hypersensitivity. Many
drugs have been tried with varying efficacy. Among the more important are, dextrose and sodium chloride mixture, quinine, quine urea hydrochloride, quinine dihydrochloride, quinine and urethane, 30 to 40% sodium salicylate, 20% sodium chloride, and sodium morrhuate. A sclerosing agent, to be most efficient; must destroy the endothelium …
