Intermolecular end-to-middle domain pairing between a thrombin-exposed 'A' polymerization site in the central 'E' domain of fibrin, and a constitutive complementary 'a' site in each outer 'D' domain ('D:E'), is necessary but not alone sufficient for normal fibrin assembly, as judged from previous studies of a congenital dysfibrinogen, Tokyo II (gamma 275 arg-->cys), which showed defective fibrin clot assembly and a normal D:E interaction (Matsuda, M., M. Baba, K. Morimoto, and C. Nakamikawa, 1983. J. Clin. Invest. 72:1034-1041). Few studies have addressed the interaction between energy balance and lean body mass in healthy subjects during spaceflight or its simulations. We used doubly labeled water to measure total energy expenditure (TEE) in nine healthy adult men during two 7-day periods, once before and once during a 10-day head-down bed-rest period. Mean TEE was 21% less during than before bed rest; however, neither basal (BEE) nor resting (REE) energy expenditures changed, implying that the lesser TEE resulted from a reduction in physical activity. During the bed-rest period, energy intake was 563 +/- 280 kcal/day higher than TEE (P < 0.05) but body weight, fluid balance, BEE, and REE did not change relative to before bed rest. However, the small but statistically significant increase in body fat (0.44 +/- 0.67 kg, P < 0.05) during the bed-rest period suggests that body weight alone does not accurately reflect changes in energy balance during antiorthostatic bed rest.

The use of electrical current to promote wound healing is well documented. However, little is understood about the effects of micro-amperage direct current (μADC) on growth of wound pathogens. The purpose of this project was to investigate the antibacterial effects of a silver wire/silver nylon electrode carrying μADC in vitro on several Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. The current was delivered via silver wire and silver nylon electrodes at an amplitude of 100 μA for a 30-minute duration in an in vitro system. Modern biotherapy has been in use for some 30 years. The first types of biotherapy were nonspecific stimulators of the immune response, but advances in genetic engineering are allowing the mass production of pure biological products which are now being tested as pharmaceutical agents. Biotherapy connotes the administration of products (1) that are coded by the mammalian genome; (2) that modify the expression of mammalian genes; or (3) that stimulate the immune system. Purpose:

To investigate the effect of a baking soda-hydrogen peroxide (0.75%) dentifrice on wound healing, plaque formation, gingival inflammation, wound healing, patient comfort, probing depth, and clinical attachment level following gingival flap surgery.

Materials and Methods:

A randomized, double-blind crossover study involving 25 patients requiring bilateral maxillary gingival flap surgery was completed. The effects of twice daily brushing with a baking soda-hydrogen peroxide dentifrice (Mentadent) or a placebo dentifrice (Crest) were observed over a 28-day post-surgical period. We were involved as forensic experts in the case of the serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. We discuss the scene and victim autopsy findings, with a brief consideration of the basic emotion of hostility. These findings support the thesis that at the basis of this serial killer's behavior were primary unconscious feelings of hate that he had channeled into a sadistic programmed destruction of 17 young men. The interview of the serial killer, the photographic scene documentation, and the autopsy findings stress the ambivalent homosexuality of the killer, his sexual sadism, his obsessive fetishism, and his possible cannibalism and necrophilia.

In the presence of plasma transglutaminase (factor XIIIa) fibrin first undergoes intermolecular covalent cross-linking between its gamma chains to create gamma dimers followed by slower cross-linking among its alpha chains to form alpha polymers. Progressive cross-linking of gamma chain dimers occurs at the slowest rate, resulting in gamma trimers and gamma tetramers (“gamma multimers”). Most studies indicate that cross-linked fibrin clots become resistant to fibrinolysis, but the basis for this event is not clear. It has been reported that CO₂ laser energy can be utilized to etch enamel. However, consistency of etching has been a significant problem. This research was designed to ascertain which exposure parameters result in consistent etching of enamel. Fourteen non.carious teeth were selected and a 2x4 gridwork was cut into the buccal surfaces creating eight discrete windows for laser exposures. Four teeth served for the initial pilot project. A literature review revealed that similar therapeutic current has been shown to suppress growth of common wound pathogens in vitro and in vivo. OBJECTIVE: To determine the use effectiveness of the Creighton model ovulation method in avoiding and achieving pregnancy. DESIGN: Prospective, descriptive. SETTING: A natural family planning clinic at a university nursing center. PARTICIPANTS: Records and charts from 242 couples who were taught the Creighton model. The sample represented 1,793 months of use of the model. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Creighton model demographic forms and logbook. RESULTS: At 12 months of use, the Creighton model was 98.8% method effective and 98.0% use effective in avoiding pregnancy. It was 24.4% use effective in achieving pregnancy. Biopsy is the definitive diagnostic procedure for breast cancer. The fear of cancer may make the breast biopsy itself a distressing experience for women and their significant others. Information seeking is believed to be a primary mode of coping with distressful events. The purpose of this study was to describe the information needs of women and their significant others prior to a breast biopsy and to explore the influence of information on the breast biopsy experience. A recent survey conducted by the American Academy of Natural Family Planning (AANFP) found that over 55% of Catholic hospitals surveyed either provide or would like to provide some form of Natural Family Planning (NFP) services. In addition, over 60% of the respondents felt that NFP should be part of the mission of a Catholic hospital. Fibrin molecules polymerize to double-stranded fibrils by intermolecular end-to-middle domain pairing of complementary polymerization sites, accompanied by fibril branching to form a clot network. Mass/length measurements on scanning transmission electron microscopic images of fibrils comprising branch points showed two types of junctions. Tetramolecular junctions occur when two fibrils converge, creating a third branch with twice the mass/length of its constituents. Newly recognized trimolecular junctions have three fibril branches of equal mass/length, and occur when an extraneous fibrin molecule initiates branching in a propagating fibril by bridging across two unpaired complementary polymerization sites. When trimolecular junctions predominate, clots exhibit nearly perfect …
