Timing Of Breastfeeding Initiation In Rural Haiti: A Focused Ethnography, Christy Bomer-Norton

A focused ethnography aimed at describing the factors affecting the timing of breastfeeding initiation among Haitian mothers, particularly the specific cultural beliefs and practices was conducted in Artribonite, Haiti. A total of 25 Haitian mothers with children less than 12 months old participated in the study which included the use of interviews, observations and artifacts. A thick description was developed by integration of qualitative and quantitative data. Self-reported timing of breastfeeding initiation ranged from 10 minutes to 24 hours post birth among the 23 participants able to quantify the specific time of breastfeeding initiation. Beliefs In Medications And Treatment Complexity As Predictors Of Medication Adherence Among Adults 18-65 Years Old With Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Donna Bacchus

Low adherence to medications in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) results in relapses and subsequently increased healthcare costs, poor quality of life, and increased comorbidities. In this correlational study, treatment complexity and beliefs in medications were tested to determine if they are predictors of medication adherence. Through convenience sampling, participants were recruited through face book, IBD organizations, and foundation websites (n = 369 final sample size). Females comprised the overwhelming majority (81.8%) of the sample. Using the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale, approximately 56% were classified as nonadherent and 44% as adherent. The American population is rapidly becoming ethnically diverse with an increase in Hispanics. As the number of Hispanics increase, so is the prevalence of obesity among Hispanic children, adolescents, and adults, indicating a need for early prevention. Regardless of guidelines from an array of professional organizations, translating evidence-based research into practice remains a challenge for providers. The purpose of this study is to examine how a practice intervention influences provider adherence to childhood obesity guidelines on preventing, assessing, and treating obesity among Hispanic children ages 6 to 12 years old. Background: It is increasingly recognized that the bacteria that live in and on the human body (the microbiome) can play an important role in health and disease. The composition of the microbiome is potentially influenced by both internal factors (such as phylogeny and host physiology) and external factors (such as diet and local environment), and interspecific comparisons can aid in understanding the importance of these factors. Rift Valley fever (RVF), a mosquito-borne zoonosis, is a major public health and veterinary problem in sub-Saharan Africa. Surveillance to monitor mosquito populations during the inter-epidemic period (IEP) and viral activity in these vectors is critical to informing public health decisions for early warning and control of the disease. Using a combination of field bioassays, electrophysiological and chemical analyses we demonstrated that skin-derived aldehydes (heptanal, octanal, nonanal, decanal) common to RVF virus (RVFV) hosts including sheep, cow, donkey, goat and human serve as potent attractants for RVFV mosquito vectors. Biopsies from the small intestine especially the duodenum are now being performed much more frequently than in the past. The most frequent reason for performing duodenal biopsies is to evaluate for malabsorption. In the last few years, increased awareness has resulted in more biopsies sent for evaluation of malabsorption, especially celiac disease (CD). In the duodenum, features of malabsorption (increased intraepithelial lymphocytes, villous shortening, and atrophy) were the most common histologic finding seen in 63.4% of cases. Background: Increasing the distribution and use of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) in Sub-Saharan Africa has made controlling malaria with ITNs more practical. We evaluated community effects induced by ITNs, specifically long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs), under ordinary conditions in an endemic malaria area of Western Kenya. Methods: Using the database from Mbita Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS), children younger than 5 years old were assessed over four survey periods. In recent years, the East African region has seen an increase in arboviral diseases transmitted by blood-feeding arthropods. Effective surveillance to monitor and reduce incidence of these infections requires the use of appropriate vector sampling tools. Here, trapped skin volatiles on fur from sheep, a known preferred host of mosquito vectors of Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV), were used with a standard CDC light trap to improve catches of mosquito vectors. Background: The rising demand for pork has resulted in a massive expansion of pig production in Uganda. This has resulted in increased contact between humans and pigs. Pigs can act as reservoirs for emerging infectious diseases. Therefore identification of potential zoonotic pathogens is important for public health surveillance. In this study, during a routine general surveillance for African swine fever, domestic pigs from Uganda were screened for the presence of RNA and DNA viruses using a high-throughput pyrosequencing method. Evarcha culicivora, an East African jumping spider (Salticidae), is the only spider for which there is evidence of innate olfactory affinity for particular plant species. Evarcha culicivora also actively chooses as preferred prey the females of Anopheles mosquitoes, and both sexes of Anopheles are known to visit plants for nectar meals. Here, we identified compounds present in the headspace of one of these species in Kenya, Lantana camara, and then used 11 of these compounds in olfactometer experiments. Our findings show that three terpenes [(E)-β-caryophyllene, α-humulene and 1,8 cineole] can be discriminated by, and are salient to, E. culicivora. The …

Background: Mosquitoes response to artificial lights including color has been exploited in trap designs for improved sampling of mosquito vectors. Earlier studies suggest that mosquitoes are attracted to specific wavelengths of light and thus the need to refine techniques to increase mosquito captures following the development of super-bright light-emitting diodes (LEDs) which emit narrow wavelengths of light or very specific colors. The 'Mycoplasma mycoides cluster' comprises the ruminant pathogens Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides the causative agent of contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP), Mycoplasma capricolum subsp. capripneumoniae the agent of contagious caprine pleuropneumonia (CCPP), Mycoplasma capricolum subsp. capricolum, Mycoplasma leachii and Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. capri. CBPP and CCPP are major livestock diseases and impact the agricultural sector especially in developing countries through reduced food-supply and international trade restrictions. Primary hyper-parathyroidism is attributed by a solitary parathyroid adenoma in 80-85% cases and mostly are non-palpable and needs imaging for localization. Cystic degeneration of parathyroid adenoma is rarely seen in primary hyperparathyroidism. Metarhizium anisopliae sensu stricto (ss) (Metsch.) Sorok. isolate ICIPE 07 is being developed as biopesticide for the control of ticks. In addition, leaf extracts of Calpurnia aurea Benth, and the attraction aggregation and attachment pheromone (AAAP) are being used as ticks' attractant. The three agents are being considered for use in combination in an autodissemination approach, whereby ticks that are attracted to semiochemicals are infected with the inoculum. HIV disclosure guidelines for a parent's and child's illness do not exist in resource-poor nations. This hinders and impedes the delivery of disclosure from parent to child. Depression is a common mental health concern for adolescents that , if not treated, may lead have lifelong consequences. Yet, many in this population are not diagnosed and thus remain untreated. Advanced practice nurse practitioners, in their places of employment, have opportunities to interact with adolescents. They are skilled and trained in health promotion and disease prevention practices. No studies were found that examined screening practices for adolescent depression of nurse practitioners, factors affecting their screening practices, and their management of adolescents whom they determine are depressed. Knowledge of how intrinsic present-on-admission patient factors such as age, gender, and pre-existing comorbid conditions contribute to patient risk during hospitalization is an important aspect for clinicians to consider when developing individualized plans of care based on patient needs. Health care providers could use such knowledge to screen and identify higher risk patients upon admission to the hospital. For those patients, the health care team could provide greater surveillance and vigilance in observation and monitoring. Such proactive interventions may reduce or avoid the occurrence of patient deterioration or need for a Rapid Response Team (RRT) intervention during hospitalization and thus, …
