Two Tribes Go To War: An Examination Of Social Interactions At Irish Football Games, Niamh Kirwan Jan 2008

Two Tribes Go To War: An Examination Of Social Interactions At Irish Football Games, Niamh Kirwan

Masters

research is to explore social life and interaction in sporting space. Despite the growing interest in the field of sport consumption, the experiences of supporters have not been adequately theorised. Studies acknowledging the sport supporter tend to focus supporters as lone individuals or as rigid groups of homogenous individuals that fit into a typology. In this study, I examine the distinct ways in which supporters in small groups interact in the sporting space through mutual relationships and interdependent social networks. Maffesoli (1996) is the original proponent in the study of tribal consumption groups. Maffesoli’s (1996) work has not been used …

There are limited studies that deal with the acute and chronic effects that high collision sports have on neurocognitive function. This study used a standardized concussion assessment (SAC) test to examine the effects that participation in high school football and high school soccer has on athletes’ neurocognitive functions throughout a season.

Forty-six male high school athletes participated in this study: 30 football players, and 16 soccer players. Each athlete underwent baseline SAC testing and a variety of SAC tests three additional times throughout the duration of the season, approximately 3 weeks apart.

Data analyses of the SAC scores did not …

The Effect Of Two Types Of Recovery On The Decline In Performance After Intense Bouts Of Exercise, Whitney Shindelar Jan 2008

The Effect Of Two Types Of Recovery On The Decline In Performance After Intense Bouts Of Exercise, Whitney Shindelar

Honors Program Theses

Anyone who is recreationally active, whether an athlete or someone in the general population, has some preferred action they choose to engage in after an extensive bout of intense exercise. According to Comparison of Two Strategies on Recovery after Exhausting Exercise, the common recommendation of raising your arms above your head in order to recover more quickly and thoroughly has been shown to not be the optimal recovery mechanism. The previously mentioned study has recently shown that a subject's heart rate decreased dramatically faster, which then decreased their over all recovery time, when they opted to bend at the …

A Public At Risk: Personal Fitness Trainers Without A Standard Of Care, Margaret E. Ciccolella, J. Mark Van Ness, Tommy Boone

College of the Pacific Faculty Articles

In 2002, an overweight, sedentary, and middle-aged man suffered a heart attack during his first workout with his “certified” personal trainer. During the workout, the man repeatedly asked to stop because he was experiencing fatigue, heat, thirst, breathlessness, and chest pain. The trainer responded to requests to stop and complaints of fatigue by questioning his client’s masculinity and by continuing the workout. In the lawsuit that followed (Rostai v. Neste Enterprises, 2006), the court did not have the option to consider a statutorily defined standard of care since no licensing requirements existed for those who design and/or lead fitness programs. …

Effects Of Acute Static Stretching On Anaerobic Performance Of The Upper Body In Collegiate Wrestlers, Karl Bratland Jan 2008

Effects Of Acute Static Stretching On Anaerobic Performance Of The Upper Body In Collegiate Wrestlers, Karl Bratland

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Stretching prior to physical activity is common in sports and recreational exercise. Athletes, coaches, trainers, and physicians recommend stretching in an effort to both prevent injury and enhance performance. However, much of this information is based more on anecdotal evidence and intuition, rather than scientific evidence. Researchers have found that typical pre-exercise stretching protocols do not reduce the incidence of injuries (Pope, Herbert, Kirwan, & Graham, 2000). Studies have also found decrements in various performance measures such as maximal strength (Kokkonen, Nelson, & Cornwell, 1998) and explosive force and jumping performance (Young & Elliot, 2001; Young & Behm, 2003) after …

Effects Of An Angled Starting Block On Sprint Start Kinematics, Nathaniel A. Brown

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of an angled proto-type starting block on sprint start kinematics. The angled starting block rotates the foot medially at a 16 degree angle, which emulates the 16 degree angle of the ankle on the medial axis of the foot. This 16 degree should allow for the athlete to apply more force against the block, resulting in a higher velocity at take-off and a faster block clearance time. In the present study, six female collegiate sprinters were filmed and analyzed using the angled starting block and a standard starting block. …

The Effects Of Intensity Level And Expertise On Attentional Focus During Exercise, Diana Gieske Aug 2007

The Effects Of Intensity Level And Expertise On Attentional Focus During Exercise, Diana Gieske

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

An important goal of exercise psychology is to identify factors that influence exercise adherence. More than half of Americans do not get the physical activity that doctors recommend for maintaining or improving a healthy lifestyle. Attentional focus during exercise has been identified as one casual factor with regard to exercise adherence. Attentional focus has traditionally oeen defined as associative or dissociative (Morgan & Pollock, 1977). Association implies that an exerciser's attention is focused on how his or her body is reacting to the exercise (such as sweating, muscle soreness, and breathing) or on things such as pace and split-times. Dissociation …

The Theory Of Planned Behavior: Predicting Physical Activity In Mexican American Children, Jeffrey J. Martin, Kimberly L. Oliver, Nate Mccaughtry

Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies

Theoretically grounded research on the determinants of Mexican American children's physical activity and related psychosocial variables is scarce. Thus, the purpose of our investigation was to evaluate the ability of the theory of planned behavior (TPB) to predict Mexican American children's self-reported moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). Children (N = 475, ages 9–12) completed questionnaires assessing the TPB constructs and MVPA. Multiple regression analyses provided moderate support for the ability of the TPB variables to predict MVPA as we accounted for between 8–9% of the variance in MVPA. Attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control accounted for 45% of the …

The Effectiveness Of Shoulder Injury Assessment Techniques: Analyzing The Occurrences Of False Positives, Alec Cianfichi Apr 2007

The Effectiveness Of Shoulder Injury Assessment Techniques: Analyzing The Occurrences Of False Positives, Alec Cianfichi

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

Shoulder injuries are very common in sports such as baseball, football, and tennis due to high impact and stress placed on the shoulder joint. Due to the greater chance of shoulder injuries in these types of sports, it is imperative for shoulder injury assessments to be accurate in order to ensure that the athlete does not participate with an injured shoulder or lose participation time due to an incorrect assessment. In order to assess the validity of the Apprehension, Relocation, and Surprise test for shoulder instability, student athletes with no known shoulder injuries were evaluated. Tests were conducted under the …
