The Effect Of Energy-Matched Exercise Intensity On Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor And Motor Learning, Jessica F. Baird, Mary E. Gaughan, Heath M. Saffer, Mark A. Sarzynski, Troy M. Herter, Stacy L. Fritz, Dirk B. Den Ouden, Jill Campbell Stewart Oct 2018

The Effect Of Energy-Matched Exercise Intensity On Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor And Motor Learning, Jessica F. Baird, Mary E. Gaughan, Heath M. Saffer, Mark A. Sarzynski, Troy M. Herter, Stacy L. Fritz, Dirk B. Den Ouden, Jill Campbell Stewart

Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Articles and Research

Background

Pairing a bout of high-intensity exercise with motor task practice can enhance motor learning beyond task practice alone, which is thought, in part, to be facilitated by an exercise-related increase in brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). The purpose of the current study was to examine the effect of different exercise intensities on BDNF levels and motor learning while controlling for exercise-related energy expenditure.

Methods

Forty-eight young, healthy participants were assigned to one of three groups: high-intensity exercise [High], low-intensity exercise [Low], or quiet rest [Rest]. The duration of the exercise bouts were individually adjusted so that each participant expended 200 …

Health-Enhancing Physical Activity During Practice Among Student Football Managers At A Division I University, Eugene C. Fitzhugh, Robin Hardin, William Boyer, Emily M. Post, Zach Behnke

Health and Sport Sciences Faculty Scholarship

Objective: Student football managers have demands on their time that may pose barriers Received 5 April 2018 to meeting recommended current physical activity (PA) guidelines. The study sought to assess the amount of PA obtained by student football managers at a NCAA Division I Football university. Participants: Subjects were student football managers (n¼14) with data collected in the fall 2015. Methods: Participants wore an Omron HJ-720ITFFP pedometer for seven consecutive days during football activities only, while self-reporting their overall PA on day 7. Measures were analyzed using repeated measures and mixed-design Athletics; epidemiology; ANOVAs. Results: Managers averaged 8474 steps/day for …

Tips For Allied Health Professionals To Successfully Engage With Research: A Commentary, Siti Nurliyana Abdullah, Saravana Kumar Oct 2018

Tips For Allied Health Professionals To Successfully Engage With Research: A Commentary, Siti Nurliyana Abdullah, Saravana Kumar

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

While allied health professionals are encouraged to engage with research, there are numerous challenges to do so in practice. In this commentary, we reflect on some of these challenges and provide some simple tips on strategies that can be used by allied health professionals to overcome these challenges. These tips may provide a starting point for allied health professionals to successfully engage with research.

Force Steadiness During A Cognitively Challenging Motor Task Is Predicted By Executive Function In Older Adults, Hugo M. Pereira, Bonnie A. Schlinder-Delap Mrs., Kristy A. Nielson, Sandra K. Hunter Oct 2018

Force Steadiness During A Cognitively Challenging Motor Task Is Predicted By Executive Function In Older Adults, Hugo M. Pereira, Bonnie A. Schlinder-Delap Mrs., Kristy A. Nielson, Sandra K. Hunter

Exercise Science Faculty Research and Publications

Motor performance and cognitive function both decline with aging. Older adults for example are usually less steady for a constant-force task than young adults when performing low-intensity contractions with limb muscles. Healthy older adults can also show varying degrees of cognitive decline, particularly in executive function skills. It is not known, however, whether age-related changes in steadiness of low-force tasks and cognitive function are independent of one another. In this study, we determined if executive function skills in aging are associated with the steadiness during a low-force muscle contraction performed with and without the imposition of a cognitive challenge. We …

Kinematic Analysis Of The Volleyball Swing Block, Maya Jeffcoat-Troy, Sam Kane Oct 2018

Kinematic Analysis Of The Volleyball Swing Block, Maya Jeffcoat-Troy, Sam Kane

Comparing Power And Endurance Athletes In The Wingate Test, Micah Balltzglier, Antwann Mccray, Jacob Wall, Megan Wortman Oct 2018

Comparing Power And Endurance Athletes In The Wingate Test, Micah Balltzglier, Antwann Mccray, Jacob Wall, Megan Wortman

EXSI 432/532: Research Methods in Exercise Science: Research Proposal Posters

The outcome of the Wingate test will be investigated for both power and endurance athletes in regards to physiological adaptations as a response to power and endurance training. It is hypothesized that throughout the Wingate testing, endurance athletes will display greater recovery heart rates and lower blood pressure values due to their superior aerobic capacity. However, power athletes will maintain a lower overall percent of maximum heart rate reached, as well as lower RPE values due to superior adaptations in the creatine-phosphate, lactate clearing, and anaerobic energy systems.

Submaximal Exercise Performance In Fasted Vs. Non-Fasted Individuals, Tia Howell, Kaylin Schuda, Morgan Murphy, Zach Lovelace Oct 2018

Submaximal Exercise Performance In Fasted Vs. Non-Fasted Individuals, Tia Howell, Kaylin Schuda, Morgan Murphy, Zach Lovelace

EXSI 432/532: Research Methods in Exercise Science: Research Proposal Posters

The purpose of this study is to compare exercise performance and substrate utilization in fasted and non-fasted, healthy college students during submaximal exercise on the leg ergometer. It was hypothesized that consuming a meal prior to submaximal exercise will yield a higher RER value compared to fasting at least three hours prior to the start of exercise.
