The Effects Of Relative Frequency Of Knowledge Of Results On Brain Injured And Neurologically Normal Individuals Learning A Linear Positioning Task, Deborah M. Thomas

Twelve normal and 12 brain injured subjects aged 18-56 years learned a linear positioning task involving moving a slide to a target position while blind folded. During the acquisition phase, feedback was provided as 33%, 67% or 100% KR. Immediate (10 minute) and delayed (24 hour) retention tests were performed without feedback. ANOVAs were used to compare the effects of feedback frequency. At the acquisition and immediate retention phases, the normal group performed with significantly less error than the brain injured group. This trend continued in the delayed retention test, but was not significant. Both groups performed best in the …

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of lumbar facet joint dysfunction on individual trunk movement characteristics, as measured by computerized range of motion testing on asymptomatic subjects. A sample of 40 subjects was examined for lumbar facet joint dysfunction via palpatory exam and placed into two groups. Group one consisted of subjects with 0-2 levels of lumbar facet joint dysfunction. Group 2 consisted of subjects with greater than 2 levels of lumbar facet joint dysfunction. This descriptive, correlational study replicated an investigation by Selman (1989) exploring the effects of Total Hip Replacement (THR) on quality of life to identify adaptation level in the four effector modes of Roy's Adaptation Model: physiologic function, self-concept, role function and interdependence. The convenience sample consisted of 43 subjects with a mean age of 67 electing to undergo primary TBR at one 410-bed midwestern medical center July, 1994 through December, 1994. Subjects were tested prior to undergoing THR and four months postoperatively. Major depressive disorder (MDD) affects many individuals in the general population. Spinal cord injury (SCI) may exacerbate depressive symptoms as individuals must adapt to an altered lifestyle as a result of the injury. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Functional Electrical Stimulation Leg Cycle Ergometry (FES-LCE) on the subjective reports of the incidence and severity of symptoms of depression in individuals with SCI. The purpose of this research was to initiate a normative pediatric three-dimensional lower extremity kinetic database specific to the Mary Free Bed Hospital/Grand Valley State University Center for Human Kinetic Studies. Twenty healthy children (eleven girls and nine boys) with a mean age of 7.9 years volunteered for this study. Lower extremity kinetic data were obtained using a computerized three-dimensional motion analysis system coupled with a force plate. This study investigated the effects of 30% body weight support on gait in two individuals with hemiplegia secondary to stroke. Two subjects with right hemiplegia were tested. Each completed four trials, two full weight bearing and two unweighted 30%, in random order. Each trial consisted of walking six meters on a treadmill at the subjects' self-selected speed. Temporal distance data were collected via Stride Analyzer footswitches. Subjects were also videotaped from the side during all trials. We expected velocity, cadence, stride length, uninvolved limb swing time, and involved limb stance time to increase with unweighting. Subjects 1's results agreed only …

The purpose of this study was to determine if employers in physical therapy outpatient facilities believed entry-level Master's degree graduates were adequately prepared to practice in a direct access environment. Three-hundred surveys were sent to employers in facilities in Michigan, Illinois, and Ohio. A Likert Scale was utilized to determine opinions regarding physical therapy skills a new graduate may have after graduating from an entry-level Master's degree program. Analysis of variance was used to determine differences in opinion based on skill and employer categorization. Controversy still exists regarding the use of isokinetic and isotonic exercise in rehabilitation of the injured athlete. Many studies have compared these two types of training methods on various strength measures and functional activity, but have focused on open kinetic chain training. The purposes of this investigation were to determine: 1) which form of closed kinetic chain training, isokinetic or isotonic, would produce the greatest increase in one-legged jump reaction force; and 2) which training method most accurately predicts peak force produced during a one-legged jump. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of quadriceps isokinetic eccentric trainingprogram at the strength of both concentric and eccentric strengths, as well as for the different eccentric training positions. Fifty-two normal subjects (26 male and 26 female), aged 21-32 year, were randomly assigned to a control group and two treatment groups. The first treatment group (n=18) trained in the sitting position and the second treatment group (n=18) trained in the supine position. A total of 50 patients, who had developed hemiplcgia or hcmiparesis as a result of a cerebral vascular disease, were collected for electrophysiologic study. All of these patients were free of peripheral nerve disorder or shoulder joint pathology.MNCV, SNCV, F latencies of bil median nerves and concentric needle eiectromyographic examination were done. The purpose of this study is to discuss the long term changes of renal function in traumatic spinal cord injured patients. This study was carried out on 45 male cases who suffered from complete traumatic spinal cord injury. As a result of injury 17 cases were quadriplegic, 28 were paraplegic. The mean age of these cases was 41.5 years (range from 21 to 60 years). The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of elbow position on segmental motor nerve conduction velocity (MNCV) of ulnar nerve and compound motor action potential (CMAP) pick up on abductor digiti minimi. This study was taken to determine the cardiovascular response after isokinetic endurance exercise among different extremities (Upper vs Lower), speeds (High-180°sec vs Low-60°sec), Types (Concentric vs Eccentric). The subjects (N=80) used KinCorn isokinetic dynamometer to perform isokinetic endurance exercise. One hundred and fifty-six stroke patients were investigated to analyze the changes of time or frequency of performing social activities between pre-stroke and post-stroke stages. Modified (Frenchay activities index) questionnaire was used and subjects were devided into three groups by the Barthel scores. Within- subjects Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to analyze the collected data. The results showed social activities were grossly disrupted in most patients after stroke especially in group I, group II (ADL-dependent groups), while group III (ADL-independent group) was primarily limited in outdoors social activities. The facial expression of functional recovery in patients with peripheral facial paisy/paraiysis on rehabili-tation therapy was investigated. Thirty-four cases of fa-cial palsy were collected from January 1986 to Decem-ber 1991 in the Department of Physicai Medicine and Rehabilitation of Tri-Service General Hospital. Twenty-five cases (74%) were classified as idiopathic and the remaining 9 cases (26%) were as organic facial palsy.The rehabilitation program included daily superficial heat, oii massage, electrical stimulation and active exer-cise of the affected muscles was prescribed and instituted completely. Renal failure was once the leading cause of death in patients with chronic spinal cord lesions. In western countries, dramatic improvements in urologic care enhancing patient survival have occurred in the last 25 years. Nonetheless, urological complications continue to be the major morbidity in spinal cord injured patients. A female of age 30 years developed a muscular weakness in proximal extremities during 2 years and responded poorly to steroid treatment. Creatine kinase in isoenzymic MM form was markedly elevated according to a serum muscle enzyme test. Electromyography examination showed a myopathic feature. Histopathological tests in muscle biopsy specimens revealed prominent cytoplasmic vacuoles rimmed by basophilic granules under space optical microscopy, and abundant intranuclear filamentous inclusions in electron microscopy. These clinical features and athological especially electron microscopic findings are considered to be of paramount importance for the diagnosis of inclusion body myositis.

We have begun to apply intra-cavernous injection of prostaglandin E1(PGE1) for management of erectile dysfunction in spinal cord injuries since 1991 and encouraging results have been achieved.
