Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a life-threatening disease with variable manifestations and thus early diagnosis is difficult among the spinal cord injury (SCI) patients. There are still no clinical reports or statistical data about the PE in SCI patients in Taiwan. However, the incidence of PE in SCI patients was higher than that in general population according to the reports in western countries, and early prevention, diagnosis and treatment were documented to reduce the morbidity and mortality. A 60 year-old male patient who presented with lumbago, fever, local tenderness over lumbar spine and associated with paravertebral muscle spasm, was prescribed antibiotic therapy 12 days after the onset of initial symptom under the impression of septic lumbar discitis, which was then verified by MRI and microbiology within one week after admission. Early diagnosis and adequate antibiotic therapy gained a favorable result, although the patient needed anterior inlerbody fusion for symptomatic retrolisthesis of L3 on L4 at the sixth week after admission.

A case of 4 years 8 months old girl who had the brain insult was followed till 8 years 1 month old. Precocious puberty with hyperphagia was noted. Results of endocrine testing revealed normal pituitary function, but increased to pubertal level of gonadotropins. Radiological study confirmed posttramatic encephalomalacia at right hemisphere including right ventromedial hypothalamus. This report discussed the medical course of the case including rehabilitation management.

Training lower extremity amputees to walk normally is quite a difficult task. Amputees must wear a prosthesis so they can walk at all. This allows them some mobility, but their walking pattern may be unnatural. If their gait is temporally asymmetric, they need to exert more energy to move about. This research was initiated to help lower extremity amputees to walk more efficiently using biofeedback gait training. Spasticity is often considered the primary limitation to function in children with spastic cerebral palsy. The purpose of this study was to study the relationship between hamstring spasticity and a functional activity, specifically gait. The gait parameters chosen were step length, stride length and velocity. A secondary purpose was to study the relationship between hamstring contracture and the same gait parameters. Reliability data were calculated for tone and ROM measurements. Eleven subjects (8 male and 3 female) between the ages of three years and fifteen years with a primary diagnosis of spastic diplegia were recruited for this study.

Motor evoked potential (MEP) study by transcranial electric or magnetic stimulation or the motor cortex has been practically used for clinical evaluation of electrophysiological function of the central motor pathway. By using a percutaneous magnetic stimulation over the motor cortex and F-wave measurement from the median nerve stimulation, central motor conduction time (CMCT) from motor cortex to C8 spinal cord was measured in 25 patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) and in 16 healthy subjects. 926 cases of hand injuries attending the Reha-bilitation Department or Emergency Service of Provincial Taoyuan Hospital from the period between Jan 1990 to May 1992 were studied either through interview (37). telephone (153) or chart review (736). Their pattern and severity of injuries, contributing causes- the present status of recovery and efficacy of rehabilitation were assessed. 78.9% of these injuries were job-related. 63.1% were injured directly by machines. Index finger was the most frequently injured site: middle finger ranked second. for job-relaied injuries. 14.5% of them need hospitalization and they hospitalization for 20.3 (2-180) days on the average. Cervical myelopathy had been noted in patients with involuntary neck movement, especially in individuals with athetoid-dystonic cerebral palsy(CP). The excessive and repeated neck motions were considered to be responsible for the premature spondylosis, which might be the cause of myelopathy. Here we present a rare case who was a male patient with long-lasting dystonic neck movement developing cervical myelopathy due to protrusion of disc in his relatively young age. A single-case study design was utilized. Data were collected from three in-depth interviews and observation of multiple treatment sessions.

Obesity is a major health problem. There is considerable information regarding the association between excessive body fatness and many health risks. The purpose of this study is to compare the cardiorespiratory responses of female obese subjects and normal-weight women during cycle ergometry. The obese group included 23 female subjects with mean age of 39.6±3.2 years (range: 19-57 yrs.). In a prospective study we applied electroacupuncture, according to the concepts of Traditional Chinese Medicine and previous studies of electrostimulation, to patients suffering from post-stroke paresthesia.Electroacupuncture over the head and limbs was applied to 20 patients with post-stroke paresthesia. All patients received brain CT scan examination of which most revealed subcortical lesions (19 subcorlicai lesions and 1middle cerebral arterial territory infarction). The duration of treatment was thirty minutes and each patient received electroacupuncture treatment once per week for 3 months. A synopsis of several clinical techniques is offered: Schober's technique, modified Schober, modified modified Schober, fingertip to floor, modified fingertip to floor, goniometer, single inclinometer, double inclinometer, and flexicurves. The results were variable for the different techniques with each having its own inherent advantages and disadvantages.
