The Presentation And Withdrawal Of Positive Reinforcement As A Behavioral Modifier Of Hyperactivity, Michael Bridges Cole Jul 1967

The Presentation And Withdrawal Of Positive Reinforcement As A Behavioral Modifier Of Hyperactivity, Michael Bridges Cole

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

Operant conditioning had its origin in research with infra-humans and later, when humans were used as subjects, the research was still done in a laboratory. Only within the last half of a decade has it been applied with any frequency to humans outside the laboratory.

Psychiatric Emergencies, W. J. Cassidy Jun 1967

Psychiatric Emergencies, W. J. Cassidy

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Types of psychiatric emergencies seen in general practice or in a hospital emergency setting are defined, along with recommendations for handling. Also discussed are P.E. in children, methods of detecting the potential suicide and some conclusions based on a 2562 patient survey in one hospital.

Psychosomatic Disorders, C. David Claybrook May 1967

Psychosomatic Disorders, C. David Claybrook

Honors Theses

The term psychosomatic is derived from two Greek words, "psyche" meaning mind and "soma" meaning body. The concept embodies the principle that the mind is closely integrated with the body, that they are inseparable. A psychosomatic illness, therefore, is an illness that has its foundations in the mind but is manifested or has its symptoms in the body. It is important to realize that these illnesses are not merely in the rampant imagination of the sick person's mind. They are very real and often painful organic disorders. The distinguishing factor in psychosomatics is that they are precipitated, to a major …

Assessing Manifest Coping Behavior Of Mentally Retarded Institutionalized Males With An Observational Technique, Daryle I. Bass Apr 1967

Assessing Manifest Coping Behavior Of Mentally Retarded Institutionalized Males With An Observational Technique, Daryle I. Bass

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

It was the purpose of the present study to explore the feasibility of investigating naturally occurring behavior of mental retardates with an observational technique.

Twelve mentally retarded male subjects, ages sixteen to twenty one, with Adaptive Behavior levels of upper III, were observed for a total of four observational time blocks of fifteen minutes each. From the collected data 105 behavioral events were extracted, and sorted as to their appropriateness or inappropriateness in the behavioral setting. Each subject was assigned scores based on frequency counts of occurrence of appropriate and inappropriate behaviors manifested during his four observational time blocks. Rank …

The Effects Of Readership Selectivity On The Reading Of Controversial Material Dealing With The Reader's Personal Prejudices : A Test Of The Theory Of Cognitive Dissonance, John Marshall Tucker Jan 1967

The Effects Of Readership Selectivity On The Reading Of Controversial Material Dealing With The Reader's Personal Prejudices : A Test Of The Theory Of Cognitive Dissonance, John Marshall Tucker

Master's Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to test the theory of cognitive dissonance as it relates to a reader's selectivity in reading controversial material involving his personal prejudices or attitudes. Festinger states that forced or accidental exposure to new information which tends to increase dissonance will frequently result in misinterpretation and misperception of the new information by the individual thus exposed in an effort to avoid a dissonance increase. Therefore, cognitive dissonance theory would predict that a person's prejudiced attitude would negatively effect his reading comprehension on material which was disharmonious with his attitude. The dissonance situation examined here is …

The Helping Professions And The Brave New World, Richard H. Dana Jan 1967

The Helping Professions And The Brave New World, Richard H. Dana

Regional Research Institute for Human Services

Each year psychologists publish an annual review of current research. It was not long ago that achievement, anxiety, and authoritarianism were the major areas chosen for investigation. Today the high interest areas are conformity, social desirability, acquiescence, powerlessness, and coping behavior. This rapid change in the focus of our attention has intimate roots in the larger culture.

Altered Body Image Following Radical Mastectomy, Julia Lee Anne Mcconnell Jun 1965

Altered Body Image Following Radical Mastectomy, Julia Lee Anne Mcconnell

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to identify reactions and adjustments to the altered body image following radical mastectomy. It was felt that nurses could be of more assistance to women facing this experience if they knew and understood the common reactions which occur.

Other studies have indicated that major areas of adjustment focus upon dress and appearance. Sexual and social relationships, and curiosity of others. The disruption of a body image makes necessary certain adjustments in the individual's perceptions of himself.

The method of research in this study was descriptive survey with the use of partially structured interviews. Thirty-five …

The Relationship Between Personality As Measured By The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory And Interest As Measured By The Kuder Preference Record, Robert Glen Knudsen May 1965

The Relationship Between Personality As Measured By The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory And Interest As Measured By The Kuder Preference Record, Robert Glen Knudsen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Counselors frequently use batteries of psychological tests in helping students to select appropriate educational and occupational choices. The task of interpreting scores on a battery of tests to students is not at any time a simple undertaking. The trend toward emphasis on the importance of the relationship among the various scores in a battery of tests, has further complicated test interpretation.

Vocational choice theories suggest an interrelationship between vocational interests and personality characteristics. They further suggest that different educational majors and occupations require different types of vocational interest and personality characteristics. Two tests, The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (hereafter referred …

Factors Related To First Year College Success In A Selected Group Of Scholarship Recipients, Laverl C. Giles May 1965

Factors Related To First Year College Success In A Selected Group Of Scholarship Recipients, Laverl C. Giles

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The idea of a scholarship program is almost as old as the oldest institution of higher learning. The universality of such a program is almost completely comprehensive throughout the world. Although the purpose of scholarship programs has varied as much as each of the institutions varies, in most of the situations the programs have been well acclaimed. The success of these programs in terms of the student has often been tested or at least scrutinized. This type of study has been attempted several times. However, both Harris (11) and Endler (7), in reviewing the literature from 1931 to 1959, report …

The Relative Efficacy Of Selected Drugs Upon The Physical Activities And The Attention Span Of A Ten Year Old Brain-Damaged Child, Ruth Elaine Atkinson Jan 1965

The Relative Efficacy Of Selected Drugs Upon The Physical Activities And The Attention Span Of A Ten Year Old Brain-Damaged Child, Ruth Elaine Atkinson

Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine the relative efficacy of selected drugs in reducing the hyperactivity end increasing the attention span of a ten-year old child who had been medically diagnosed as having brain damage.

The evaluation of the effects of three drugs, Chlordiazepoxide (librium), Fluphenasine Hydrochloride (Prolixin), Thioridazine (Mellaril), and a combination of Mellaril and Methylphenidate Hydrochloride (Ritalin), was made by a psychiatrist after consideration of (1) written observations of the child’s school activities during a two-hour period, (2) a tabulation of data based on the observations, (3) reports made by the parents and teacher of the …

Extended Report Of Construct Validation Of The Barron Ego Strength Scale, Richard H. Dana, Jean T. Teter Jan 1964

Extended Report Of Construct Validation Of The Barron Ego Strength Scale, Richard H. Dana, Jean T. Teter

Regional Research Institute for Human Services

One component of an MMPI Ego Strength Scale (Es) definition, personal adaptability, was investigated by behavioral, conscious, and fantasy measures of persistence. Male and female, high and low Es subjects, did not differ on these measures. Measures of persistence alone may be inadequate samples of the personal adaptability component of Es.

Extended Report Of The Impact Of Fantasy On A Treatment Program, Richard H. Dana Jan 1964

Extended Report Of The Impact Of Fantasy On A Treatment Program, Richard H. Dana

Regional Research Institute for Human Services

It is axiomatic in milieu therapy that the man on top is responsible for success or failure of the program. However, little research attention has been given to the impact of a superintendent upon an institution. One reason may be that only rarely is an institution's stewardship uncomplicated by a past history. This case report is of the first-year operation of a correctional institution for adolescent delinquent girls. The superintendent literally created policy and program and trained staff in an attempt to satisfy goals of custody and rehabilitation. In this relatively unique enterprise the values, dynamics and motives of the …

Anxiety And Fear In Personality Structure, Robert Robert Mickelson Aug 1963

Anxiety And Fear In Personality Structure, Robert Robert Mickelson

Graduate Student Research Papers

The problem to be studied is the effect of anxiety and fear on the personality. Concern with this problem stems from the fact that on many occasions anxiety and fear blocks a person's free approach to experience and often anxiety and fear prevent one from building sound interpersonal and intergroup relations.

The Concept Of Adaptive Behavior In An Institutional Setting, John C. Jones Jul 1963

The Concept Of Adaptive Behavior In An Institutional Setting, John C. Jones

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

The present study is an attempt to objectify the subjective concept of adaptive behavior and to show the effect of institutionalization upon adaptive behavior.

The development of an Adaptive Behavior Rating Sheet consisting of forty-five items is a major portion of this study.

The Adaptive Behavior Rating Sheet was administered to a sample of ninety patients who, at the time of administration, had been in the Parsons State Hospital and Training Center (PSH&TC) between one year six months and two years six months.

The raw scores were statistically reduced to comply with the five levels of adaptive behavior employed at …

Construction And Validation Of A Forced-Choice Scale For Rating Clinical Performance Of Physical Therapy Students, Margot Trimble Jan 1962

Construction And Validation Of A Forced-Choice Scale For Rating Clinical Performance Of Physical Therapy Students, Margot Trimble

Master's Theses

One of the major objectives of education in the profession of physical therapy is to prepare the student to adequately perform in a clinical setting. A part of the education of each physical therapy student is devoted to full-time clinical experience under the supervision of qualified therapists. These therapists, designated as clinical supervisors or clinical instructors, are faced with the problem of evaluation of each student's performance during the period of clinical education. The problem of providing valid evaluation of clinical performance by a student is one common to many professions. It is not unlike the problem faced by many …

Objective Tat Scores And Personality Characteristics: Hypothesis Formulation. Statistical Summary, Richard H. Dana Jan 1962

Objective Tat Scores And Personality Characteristics: Hypothesis Formulation. Statistical Summary, Richard H. Dana

Regional Research Institute for Human Services

This paper contains the statistical results of a "buckshot" congruent validation study of one objective TAT scoring variable, Perceptual Organization (PO). PO was developed from personality theory and from an explicit rationale for the construction of scoring systems for projective techniques. PO is scored from a five card, short-form, TAT set which yields scores comparable to a 20 card set. A series of concurrent validation studies culminated in a manual for application of the scoring system in which PO is one variable. PO is a reliable score (scorer reliability; test-retest) and valid for prediction of clinical diagnosis (current validity). That …

Intraindividual Verbal-Numerical Discrepancies: Dichotomy Or Continuum, Personality Characteristic Or Psychopathology?, Richard H. Dana, Arnold E. Dahlke Jan 1962

Intraindividual Verbal-Numerical Discrepancies: Dichotomy Or Continuum, Personality Characteristic Or Psychopathology?, Richard H. Dana, Arnold E. Dahlke

Regional Research Institute for Human Services

IntraindlviduaI differences in verbal and numerical abilities have been observed since the inception of appropriate measuring Instruments. Whether verbal and numerical ability occur in the form of a continuous distribution or as dichotomous categories has both theoretical and practical importance. That such variation has meaning in terms of predictable college academic success is recognized. Less apparent, but equally important, are relationships between Intraindividual verbal and numerical variation and personality characteristics and/or psychopathology. In college situations the American Council on Education Psychological Examinatipn (ACE), with Linguistic (l) and Quantitative (Q) components, and the School and College Ability Tests (SCAT), with Verbal …

A Search For Important Stimulus Variables In The Early Family Relationships Of Schizophrenic Patients, Robert F. Horner Jun 1961

A Search For Important Stimulus Variables In The Early Family Relationships Of Schizophrenic Patients, Robert F. Horner

Doctoral Dissertations

Summary and Conclusions

Ten male schizophrenic patients and their control subjects were matched on the variables age, education, and socioeconomic status by occupation. The Pascal-Jenkins Behavioral Scales (Pascal & Jenkins, 1960b) were used to investigate the stimulus situations presented by grandparents, parents, and siblings in the first ten years of the subjects’ lives. The experiment was replicated with ten additional experimental subjects and their controls.

The stimulus categories “Mother” and “Father” were found to be highly significant in both experiments. This suggested that the schizophrenic patients had more general deprivation of needs by parents in the early years. Specifically defined …

Prediction Of Academic Success In The College Of Forestry, Ronald Skeen Peterson May 1961

Prediction Of Academic Success In The College Of Forestry, Ronald Skeen Peterson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The College of Forest, Range and Wildlife Management (hereafter referred to as the College of Forestry) at Utah State University has been concerned for some time with the problem of selecting from the applicants to their school the ones whom they think will be able to complete the requirements for graduation. The large number of freshman students placed on probation at the end of the fall quarter and of succeeding quarters each year fives some idea of the magnitude of the problem. It is not unusual for 40 or 50 percent of the entering freshmen to be in this category.
